Dodgers at Astros, 5:10 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet SW, FS1, SPNLA
Two former aces and teammates face one another as the Dodgers send LHP Clayton Kershaw (6-3, 3.18 ERA) to the hill to face RHP Zack Greinke (4-1, 3.77 ERA). When they were on the same staff between 2013-2015 Greinke won 51 games and Kershaw won 53.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1919 Casey Stengel, traded by the Dodgers in the off-season to the Pirates, calls time, steps out of the batter’s box to give the razzing Ebbets Field fans the ‘bird’. The Pittsburgh right fielder doffs his hat, allowing a sparrow to fly out, much to the amazement and amusement of the fans.
- 2002 With four homers on Thursday (5/23), one on Friday (5/24), and two more on Saturday (5/25), Shawn Green becomes the first major leaguer to hit seven round-trippers in three games. The Dodger outfielder’s nine big flies in a week also breaks a National League record, established by Ralph Kiner with eight and tied by Ted Kluszewski and Nate Colbert.
- 2002 Getting his 3,509th K, Diamondback southpaw Randy Johnson passes Walter Johnson to become seventh on the all-time career strikeout list. After fanning Shawn Green in the first to catch the ‘Big Train’, Dodger outfielder Brian Jordan swings and misses a 2-2 pitch in the second inning to become the ‘Big Unit’s’ historic victim.

Yippee!! Beat the cheaters and fraud WS champs. Title should have been stripped. Players should have been suspended. The comish screwed up big time. There is no way in a logical scenario that they should have been allowed to keep the title.
Wow. Another bases loaded moment for the Blue team.
Doc takes the ball away, but Klayton gets an ovation. Theater.
Sweet pitch Kershaw!
Lux was motoring going first to third on that hit.
I get so mad when the ump won’t call a strike on the outside corner a strike and then the next pitch gets hit for a single because the pitcher has to throw it closer to the middle…
So mad I can’t type.
See that Bickford is trying to fill Dustin May’s shoes – in terms of the volume of hair. Tough shoes to fill however!
His shower cap, actually.
Thank you! Couldn’t find the right word so just went with shoes. I guess baseball cap could have worked but shower cap is perfect.
I am glad that the Asterisks had a full house to watch this game tonight.
Great game. Kershaw ruled.
Dodgers win.
1/2 game behind the Padres and tied in terms of run differential at +79.
Woo-HOO!!!
Bickford was a first round pick (bick?) by the Blue Jays in 2013, but he didn’t sign. He was a first round pick by the Giants in 2015 and did sign. In five innings at OKC this year he had allowed three earned runs.
Scoop with the background info!
Doing my Jerry Doggett imitation.
I never really knew Jerry. Didn’t hear Dodger games until very late in his career on MLB radio. Except for the 1988 World Series…
And by “his” I meant Scully!
Jerry was pretty good. If I remember correctly, Vinnie did the first three innings and the last three innings and Jerry did the middle three. Jerry also did the pre-game interviews and I think the post-game interviews. After he retired he moved about an hour from where we live. I thought of trying to visit him, but I didn’t and he passed away in 1997 at the age of 80, ten years after he retired. Doggett worked with Scully for 32 seasons, starting in Brooklyn.
I first heard Dodger games with Vin and Jerry.

Nice k there.
Sloppy play by CT3 this time.
He should just ate it.
Yup.
Trying for the out was fine with an eight run lead.
After juggling it, he had no chance – especially with that throw.
He felt he had a chance. The throw was subsequent to that feeling.

Ugly throw by Taylor.
Not sure making the other team feel good suddenly is the right strategy.
Hopefully he can work out of this jam.
They are making him work hard.
Well, they do need the batting practice.
Who is this pitcher?
I know this is not what you are looking for but he is exactly the pitcher you have to close out a 9-1 game in the 9th inning.
Or he better close out this game…
Recent pickup, was once a high draft choice for the Gnats.
Did someone earlier say this game was flying by?
Well, Lux was flying by first.
Nice
Dodger batters saw 60 pitches over the first five innings. 106 in the three subsequent. (Jon)
Hmm, that’s when I tuned in…
top of the fifth when we were an hour in.
Lux, will he!?
Trying.
Peters looks much more comfortable at the plate.
Talks a walk. #trueDodger
JAWDJ
JawDJ? Sounds like someone mixing music at the local night club!
Munce leather.
He is so good at digging those out.
He and CT3 Co-MVPs so far.
Probably have some co-Cy Young’s as well
Unless it’s Bauer outright.
Both rescued from the trash heap by the FO.
See ya!
Ok
Not me 🙂 Altuve
Ok as well.
Lots of boos for Kelly.
Can’t imagine why…
I bow down to Clayton Kershaw tonight. What a performance.
81 pitches. One mistake.
Do you think Kelly will hit anyone?
I don’t hope so, but I wouldn’t mind if someone has to spin out of the way.
But the DP was sweeeeeet!
Sloppy play by Lux. His first one tonight.
Got the next one for the DP!
Kelly warming up. 😉
Lower lips out!
Cost him 5 games.
Pouty mouth!
Doc going for theater.
The Bronx cheer for throwing a strike. After 11 straight balls.
8-1. And I do not feel sorry for them.
Nor do I!
Yikes their pitchers are bad.
Scrubb’s got nothing so far.
Ex-Dodger farmhand.
Mookie up.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
7-1 and the boo-birds are out.
Looks like the Astros are bringing in a scrubb pitcher.
Another mound visit?
Pitcher hurt.
I wonder what the rule on that is because unless he goes on the IL – that’s a sneaky way to get around the 3 batter rule. Oh, he is “injured” so we need to bring in a different pitcher.
Not saying the Astros would ever cheat the system, but…
That offensive slump sure lowered everyone’s ERA.
That was some at bat by Albert. Unfortunately he lost it but fun to watch.
So good.
Dang. Can’t waste those good swings from Albert.
Pujols JUST missed another RBI or two.
Kershaw with the one mistake pitch so far. Out of 67.
Cheap hr.
Dusty sighting.
Safe. Lol
He had to shake the dirt out of his ear.
That’s why I laughed!
Taylor makes the grab!
Off the bat, it looked like a base hit.

CT3 delivers.
CT3! Brings in two more!
Beerboys blew a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth, and still trail the Pads 2-0.
I am feeling like a kid. An hour in and the game is almost half over.
One hopes that this is the start of the end of Turner’s slump.

Looking good!
JT!
Lotta Blue in the park.
Thanks to Milwaukee misplays, the Pads lead the Beerboys 2-0 in the fourth.
Kersh has the curve working.
Bill Plunkett notes that the Alvarez swing and miss on the curve ball was more than Kershaw got throwing 51 breaking pitches in game 5 of the 2017 WS. Hmmm.
Joe Davis now noting this as well.
Orel adds that this has never happened to Kershaw before or since.
The Asterisks could redeem themselves by returning their rings.
Joc has hit two dingers for the Cachorros in Pittsburgh tonight.
Just realized the Dodgers would have to win another 13 games in a row in order to be 42-18. Which would be still 1 game behind the 43-17 they finished last year.
Current winning percentage of .617, would have been almost enough to have led the NL and won the West Division last year
And they should do better than that.
