Astros vs Rays, 1:07 PDT, TV: TBS
RHP Lance McCullers goes for the Astros and RHP Charlie Morton, former Astro, pitches for the Rays. McCullers started Game One of the ALDS and was pushed around by the As, giving up five runs including three home runs in four innings. Despite that, the Astros won the game. Here’s Castillo’s five-out save of Game One:
This day in baseball history includes two Dodger losses in clinching games of the World Series (1916 and 1920), Vin Scully’s first broadcast, Dave Henderson’s go-ahead HR off Donnie Moore in the ninth to keep the Angels from winning the 1986 ALCS and more.
Bregman flies out!
Thank you, Bregman!
That was tense.
8 straight balls to the previous two guys and Bregman swings at the first pitch.
Shakes head sorrowfully.
Gleefully.

He’s got nothin’.
Astros keeping things interesting in the top of the ninth.

Joe Morgan has passed way, joining Whitey Ford, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock and Bob Gibson as members of the Hall of Fame who have died this year. Rather shocking and upsetting.
He was only seven years older than I. Morgan was suffering from a nerve condition, a form of polyneuropathy.
I was shocked to read that, at LAX, he had been slammed to the ground by LAPD as a drug-runner. He won a big civil-rights settlement.
And I forgot to include Al Kaline.

Morgan “could not be reached for comment, but his attorney said the case should cause officers to act with greater restraint.” Yeah, right…
Yes. So hard to believe.
