Mariners at Dodgers, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: ROOTNW, SPNLA
The visitors hand the ball to LHP Marco Gonzalez (2-2, 3.97). In his last start he gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings, but he’s been Seattle’s most consistent starter nonetheless. He’ll fact the Dodgers’ RHP Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who’s being tried in the swing role vacated by Ross Stripling so far this year.
What kind of week has Mookie Betts had? Well…
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1959 Long time baseball executive Branch Rickey is named president of the newly formed Continental League. The 77 year-old former Dodger general manager is currently serving as an advisor with the Pittsburgh Pirates. (Editor’s Note: Here’s a pretty good book about the Continental League)
- 1982 In the second longest game in franchise history, the Cubs lose to the Dodgers, 2-1. The Wrigley Field contest, which is played over two days, takes a Dusty Baker sacrifice fly and 21 innings to complete.
A sad note: On this day in 1967 Jack Hamilton of the Angels threw a fastball which shattered Tony Conigliaro’s left cheekbone. The 22 year-old Red Sox slugger missed the rest of 1967 and all of the following year and never came close to the Hall of Fame potential displayed during his first three seasons.

Twinkies in the process of undoing everything Maeda did, and succeed in doing so.
Kenta loses the no-no on a blooper to short CF.
Kenta now hitless through seven, with 10 K’s. at 92 pitches.
Old friend Maeda is tossing an interesting game, with 9 K’s through 5-2/3. Only one ball out of the infield.
Let’s go!

Been doing a great job for the Twinkies
3-0, 2.12 ERA.
Dodgers win their second game of the season when scoring 4 runs or less. The other one was a 4-2 win in 13 innings v Houston.
They beat the Snakes 3-0 on August 2.
Well that’s an interesting point. Lol.
Twins eventually won, but not till the 12th inning. Maeda struck out eight guys in a row at one point in the game.
Taller Bellinger or Ríos woulda made that stretch.
Barnes is unstoppable.
But he is the backstop.
Ha!
Excellent, Mr. or Ms. Bumsrap!
Bums is fine
Check.
Still interesting in Minnesota. Maeda through 8 but now at 114 pitches.
Guessing he goes out for the ninth.
No no-no for Maeda.
Love that the game score 2-1 matches the pitchers of record W-L records: Treinen 2-1, Altavilla 1-2.
Yanquis lose, so Dodgers now have baseball’s best record.
Dodgers now lead division by four and, if Devil Rays hang on in the Bronx, baseball’s best record. Rox trail by four, Snakes 4.5, Pads 5.0, Gnats 9.0.
Yippee!
Woo-HOO!!!
Who said there was no Morrow Two?
Dodgers win!
Seager stays with it!
Young Seager!
This is peak 1965 Dodgers.
I can’t get over Barnesie!
The guru touch of Mookie Lynn Betts.
Go Austin!
Small ball for the lead!
Barnes is the new Roseboro.
Barnes stepped up to the plate hitting .304.
Making a case to be more than just a backup.
He got to .300 before the other three got to .200.
No walks for the Blue tonight.
They usually get lots.
Time to win it late here Dodgers.
Off topic Q for you Angelino’s: Clippers or Lakers?
(Asking for my basketball mad son.)
Their abandonment of Seattle was a disgrace. I saw them in their first year, with Walt Hazzard and Tom Meschery.
I recall Shawn Kemp…
I would say it will be a Laker mad town until the Clippers win it all a few times.
Lakers
Lakers, but mainly Dodgers. Also Sparks.
Ohh. Good call on mentioning the Sparks.
Lakers fan since Baylor/West.
Seattle Supersonics.
Ha!
OK.
These guys are tough outs.
The Mariners are pushing Gonzales into one inning too many.
Apparently not.
Gameday is frozen. What did Muncy do?
I just saw, a ground ball DP.
You’re not watching?
Perhaps Roberts should swap Barnes and Bellinger in the batting order. (That was mean.)
And then there were three: Dodgers with ERAs of 0.00 — Gonsolin, Kelly and Kolarek.
Got off cheap.
Absolutely.
Got out of that cheaply enough.
McGee gets a gift.
I hate leadoff walks.
Because they score so often.
Guess the game isnt starting at 6.
JT was bound to drive in a run and some point tonight!
Betts will do it right here.
Gonsolin: 84 pitches through 6. What do you think he’s good for?
I’d certainly let him start the seventh but, given the heat, probably a short leash.
How hot is in L.A. today?
90° at present, but it was 102° at gametime. only 40 percent humidity.
It was so hot I saw a fire hydrant chasing a dog?
Gonsolin is pitching better and deeper into games than Buehler and May.
Maybe Gonzáles will get tired from striking out so many Dodger hitters that Seattle will need to go to the bullpen.
He is pinpoint today.
Just as long as Gonsolin can outlast him we are okay.
But isn’t the Dodger pen better than Seattle’s?
Yes but still need to score a run.
Oh, that…
That little detail taken care of
He has reached 99 pitches this year, so maybe he can go two more innings tops.
Gonsolin went 99 pitches already this year? I totally don’t recall that.
I got my conversations mixed up – we are talking Gonzales not Gonsolin here obviously.
82 is his highest this year. Gonzales is 99.
Gonzales started that inning with 11 straight strikes to Taylor and Muncy.
Goose is throwing 98!?
Combined with his off speed stuff, not wonder no one can hit him.
What’s the over-and-under in games played on when Bellinger’s batting average surpasses .200?
30. Who will get to .200 first between Joc, Belli, Max?
Well, I don’t think Joc will ever get there. I think he will finish the year with another club or at the Dodgers’ training base at USC. I think Max will reach .200 before Bellinger because he doesn’t seem down on himself that often; Belli does.
I don’t think Joc can get sent down, and I expect he’ll get hot anyway.
What’s the rule? After so many years a player can’t be optioned?
He could be out of options or has a contract.
I was wondering what their final averages will be this year? Maybe .245 or .250 for Belli?
A couple days ago it already did.
I thought he got up to .195 during a game. In any event, he wasn’t at .200 at game’s end. The last time he ended a game above .200 was Game 5 at .227.
Yeah, recall him breaching the Mendoza Line during a game a couple of days ago.
So is the question now when will he get to .200 and stay to the end of the year?
I won’t take that bet.
Well, they are 2-0 when he finishes a game above .200, 15-7 otherwise.
In that 21-inning game, both Fernando and Bob Welch played LF and RF. Fernando caught one fly ball, but Welch had no chances. Jerry Reuss won it, pitching the last four innings scoreless, and then immediately went five in the following game – also winning that one while allowing two runs.
At lightless Wrigley, darkness caused suspension after the 17th.
That could have turned out better for the Dodgers.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Who IS this Lewis kid? Heckuva catch!
Terrible throw by Dee. Seager woulda scored.
IIRC Dee threw out a guy as the relay man from left field in one of his first games as a Dodger. Recall thinking that he didn’t have a rep for having a strong arm at the time.
Didn’t Kemp have to buy Dee something for throwing a ball somewhere?
Classic Seager backspinning hit ball for a double out to the wall.
Turner’s ball might have gone out if it were not for a piece of leather that got in the way.
Different creature than last night’s game.
Nick Markakis, who opted out of the season because of COVID and then opted back in, is now on the Barves’ COVID DL.
That’s unfortunate.
He won’t be the last.
True enough.
Expect not. Goal is to keep it under civilian infection rate. Understand that they may go to a bubble like the NBA for the playoffs. Don’t think the NBA has had a case yet, which is quite the accomplishment for such a sport as basketball.
Including the guy who drooled on a microphone at a press conference and then tested positive?
One more thing we can’t do.
There goes the perfect game.
It’s hard to believe that Dee Gordon could ever be 32 years old.
Dodgers vs lefties = not great hitting
Goose looking sharp to start.
Old friend Manny Machado makes play in right field. Why he’s out there is explained as “the shift.”
The Goose ranks at the top of the ERA leaderboard since his debut between Ryu and deGrom!

It’s 100 degrees out right now. Hydrate, Dodgers!
It’s a frigid 82° in Oakland.
It’s a warm 33C in Winnipeg. I think that’s about 91 or 92.
91.4 in real degrees
Real?
Agent provacteur.
Mookie is the man.
