Game 3, 2020

Giants at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: Fox

As of Friday evening the Giants are using that TBD guy off the mound again, while the Dodgers ask LHP Alex Wood to beat them for the third straight game. Wood spent last year ostensibly with Cincinnati but mostly on the injured list. He signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers in the off-season, presumably in hopes he can recover his previous form (career 53-43, 3.40 ERA) and leverage it to a new contract for 2021.

Here are Muncy’s two HRs from Friday night:

This date in Dodgers history:

  • 1962 At Sportsman’s Park, Stan Musial surpasses Giants’ legend Mel Ott as the National League’s all-time RBI leader. ‘Stan the Man’s’ two-run home run off Don Drysdale in a 5-2 loss to the Dodgers gives the Cardinals’ right fielder 1,862 career runs batted in with the Redbirds. (Ed. — He’s now eighth on the all-time list, behind Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez, Cap Anson, Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds and Lou Gehrig)

Non-Dodgers history which amuses me as a lapsed guitarist: 2010 The Baseball Hall of Fame honors John Fogerty for his classic rock song “Centerfield”. At the induction ceremonies, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs his 1985 hit and then donates his baseball bat shaped-guitar to the Cooperstown museum.

Here’s John and his kids playing the song at Dodger Stadium earlier this year:

  1. Webb was drafted by the Giants in the 4th round in 2014. He made it to the majors (Giants) last year, pitched in eight games (all starts) and went 2-3 with an ERA of 5.22. Before that he had reached AAA for only one game in the same season.

  2. Bellinger and Betts off to slow starts, but everyone else in today’s starting lineup ended up the game hitting at least .333.

    • As you said below, base running mistakes were costly. Also they had a lot of fluky, if not lucky, moments early on.

  3. At least we made a game of it. All those baserunning gaffes ended up hurting us. Who knows where things might have gone had we not had four runners thrown out on the bases? I think that Taylor’s was the most egregious. We would have had first and second with none out.

  4. I don’t think Rogers wanted any part of Pederson (except the part that he hit).

  5. Belli swinging at ball four. Our at bats have ranged from mediocre to bad this game.

  6. I’m running out of battery and therefore running out of here.See everybody for game 4.

    • Hitting for Muncy (Barnes actually) who might be out due to foot (hand) soreness? Both were HBP earlier.

    • Two on, zero outs, down 3+ runs, not a good time for Taylor to take a chance. If the ball drops and joc isn’t at least half way he is going to be out at second and if it is caught it was going to be hard to get back to first.

  7. Remember in 2015 when Flores cried on the field when he was a Met and he thought they had traded him, which they hadn’t.

  8. Heading into this inning the Dodgers had scored in nine of their last 10 innings.

  9. Well, if SF pitching can shoutout the Dodgers for 9 innings they will win. But I’m going to hope that the Dodgers can score at least 2 runs today.

  10. Game is on FS1 to start because the Cubs-Brewers game is a high-scoring affair and running long. It’s in the 8th, Brewers up 8-3.

  11. Quique is lagging behind in the RBI race as, without a ribbie yesterday, he’s only on pace for 1500. Meanwhile, in San Diego last night, Eric Hosmer had a pair of three-run doubles – to beat the Snakes and BadGums – and is therefore on pace for 3600.
