Game 125, 2019

Dodgers at Braves, 4:20 PM PDT, TV: FSSO, SPNLA

LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-2, 1.45 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers while the Braves send RHP Mike Foltynewicz (4-5, 6.24 ERA) to the hill. The last time Ryu saw the Braves he threw a 4-hit complete game shutout against them on May 7. Foltynewicz spent six weeks at AAA and has made two starts since. He’s got a 7.41 ERA in the four starts he’s made against the Dodgers since 2018.

The Dodgers set a new record for most HRs in a five-game stretch with 22:

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1992 Kevin Gross, retiring 22 of the final 23 batters he faces on his wife’s birthday, no-hits the Giants at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. The LA right-hander’s no-no averts the team from being swept in a four-game series at home against the Giants for the first time in 69 years.
  • 2013 Clayton Kershaw blanks the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, 5-0, giving the Dodgers their first double-digit winning streak since 2006. The team’s 42 victories in their last fifty games, including a 25-3 mark since the All-Star break, equals the 1941 Yankees and 1942 Cardinals for the best record for that span of games since 1900.

  1. Brought in to protect a three-run lead in the ninth, Sean Doolittle of the Nats (gnot the Gnats) has allowed two solo homers and a two-run shot.

  2. Suddenly they have Ryu’s number. That was a long at bat before the dinger, with a ton of foul balls. He’s still pitching pretty well but they are hitting better. Man I hate that chop chant, though.

  3. Made it to Atlanta the past two years for the Dodger visit. Not this year, but will catch at least a couple in Camden Yards.

        • When I lived in Mount Pleasant, near Rock Creek Park. Can’t remember the O’s opponent.

          • As I recall, you said you lived near the entrance to the zoo. Through old photos, I have identified a house where Walter Johnson lived for a year in Mt. Pleasant and used to take a car load of kids with him to the games at Griffin Stadium. It is near the entrance to the zoo on Irving Street.

    • Saw a game there two summers ago on U of Maryland night. Got a souvenir ball cap, bright red with black brim and the laughing Oriole on the front.

      • Notwithstanding the potential seriousness of any such incident, I was a little surprised at the additional suspension.

        • Me, too. It seemed far less egregious than most of the other incidents in professional sports.

      • Agreed. So he will be back in early September and, I hope, much wiser about how one treats women. I have not seen details of what he did, but I will look for them.
