Game 123, 2019

Dodgers at Marlins, 12:05 PM PDT, TV: FS-F, MLBN (out-of-market only), SPNLA

RHP Walker Buehler (10-2, 3.08 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers against the Marlins’ LHP Caleb Smith (7-6, 3.71 ERA). Buehler was annoyed with himself after his last start; he went six scoreless innings and struck out eight but “didn’t throw enough first-pitch strikes.” Smith has struggled since the All Star break. He had a 3.50 ERA before that and has had a 4.15 ERA since. He averaged 2.63 BB/9 and 11 K/9 before the break and 3.89 BB/9 and 10.13 K/9 after it.

Senor Rios had a big night: his first two home runs.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1914 Brooklyn’s Jake Daubert sets a National League record with four sacrifices in one game. The first baseman’s efforts aren’t enough when the Dodgers drop an 8-7 decision to Philadelphia at Ebbets Field.
  • 1926 When Babe Herman doubles with the bases loaded, three Dodgers wind up on third base. The runner on second rounds third but decides to go back as the runner from first reaches the same base, and a few seconds later Herman slides in to join his two teammates.
  • 1951 With one out in the top of the eighth inning and a runner on third base in a 1-1 tied game, Willie Mays, running at full speed, makes an incredible catch of Carl Furillo’s drive to deep centerfield. After grabbing the ball, the rookie outfielder turns counterclockwise and throws a perfect strike to home to nail a surprised Billy Cox at home to complete the double play. Some believe the catch, in the Giants’ eventual 3-1 Polo Grounds victory over the Dodgers, is the impetus for the beginning of the team’s incredible comeback from an 11.5 game deficit to win the National League pennant.
  • 2006 The Dodgers, with their 4-0 blanking of the Marlins, win their sixth consecutive game and 17th in the last 18 contests. The stretch is the team’s best run since the Brooklyn Superbas went 20-1 in 1899.

  1. Friday Features – Yesterday coulda been much worse, Dodgers still lead Snakes and Gnats by 19.5, Pads by 23.5, Rox by 26. Barves had a scare, hitting three HRs in the ninth, but the Mutts hung on and Dodgers still lead Atlanta by nine for best in NL.

For best in baseball, Yanquis got clubbed worse than Dodgers did, so the teams are still tied. Here in the East Bay, the Minute Maids melted down again – third late-inning bullpen implosion in five days – and they still trail by 2-1/2.

  3. Given what a great season the Dodgers are having, you can accept the occasional game like this one. Still, it’s frustrating when the lower-shelf relievers have a chance to show something positive and fail to do so.

  4. Yankees might be having the same kind of day as us. Grand slam by the Indians in the first inning.

    • Also, the Barves are getting bombed by the Mutts. Minute Maids play here later tonight.

  5. So, my question is this: After the Dodgers score seven runs in the next two innings to take a 14-13 lead, who comes in to get the save in the bottom of the 9th?

  6. Well, at least the post-season bullpen is beginning to take shape. It will be addition by subtraction.

  7. Silver Lining Department: Seager has found his groove. Also, we have now hit 17 home runs in our lasts 3 2/3 games.

  8. We have given up more runs in the last two innings (11) than in the previous eight games combined (10). Why didn’t I take that nap that I promised myself about a half-hour ago?

  9. Chargois does not inspire confidence. The HB scores on a shift beating soft ground ball and a stupid bloop single. Ugh.

    • I guess we were due for a game like this. I just didn’t see it coming vs. the Marlins. Had a good workout this morning, and now it is time to take a nap.

  10. Buehler’s not at his sharpest today, though the home plate umpire hasn’t helped at all.

  11. Bases loaded, one out, visit on the mound with Smith, Buehler, Seager, and Muncy and Smith is the only one that says a word. A young rookie taking charge.

  12. This game is either too early and people have better things to do, fun or not, or it is a game that just doesn’t give us anything to cheer.

    • Myself, I would be packing boxes if the game were not on. I’m sipping a beer but not enjoying it. Michelob Light. Boring but it was on sale and stacks of it were located where you had to walk around it to get into the grocery store.

    • His last season, I would guess. He was hoping to do well enough to be a late-season pickup.

  13. Had to look up Jake Daubert (whose name I’d only heard before). Worth noting that those sacrifices were all bunts, so the Superbas were really giving away outs in an 8-7 game.

Daubert was a pioneer in attempting to unionize baseball, and for that reason Charles Ebbets traded him to the Rojos. He died young, at age 40, shortly after playing in his last game.
