Game 97, 2019

Dodgers at Phillies, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), NBCSP, SPNLA

RHP Walker Buehler (8-1, 3.46 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers against RHP Vince Velasquez (2-5, 4.63 ERA) of the Phillies. Buehler hasn’t started since July 3 but made an appearance in the All Star Game a week ago. In that last start he struck out nine D-Backs in seven innings but was gone by the time Bellinger hit a home run in the bottom of the 10th for the Dodgers’ fifth consecutive walk-off win. He’s 1-1 with a 7.94 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. Velasquez briefly lost his spot in the rotation but has seemingly gotten it back. This despite being 0-2 with a 5.94 ERA in his last four starts and lasting 4, 1, 6 and 6 innings in them, respectively.

Bellinger had a 4-hit 2-HR game on Monday:

This day in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1913 In a game against the Cubs, Superbas’ second baseman George Cutshaw handles 14 chances without an error. The infielder’s defensive prowess helps Brooklyn beat Chicago at Ebbets Field, 4-2.
  • 1948 Brooklyn’s Branch Rickey agrees on a deal with Giants owner Horace Stoneham that releases his manager Leo Durocher to become the Giants’ skipper, replacing the popular Mel Ott. Burt Shotton will take the ‘Lip’s’ place in the Dodger dugout.

On this date in 1990 Steve Lyons embarrassed himself dreadfully by dropping his uniform pants while standing at first base after sliding into the bag to beat out a bunt.

  1. From The Athletic:

“…he was certain he had made the wrong decision in the moment.

He did not want to make an excuse, and he is not a quitter, he said, but he had learned his lesson. “I should have come out of the game,” he said.

    [snip]

The injury’s severity is not yet clear. What this season has made quite clear is that Jansen, soon to be 32, is still an effective reliever but no longer an unbeatable one. He is prone to lapses in command and even velocity, and he needs both to dominate opponents. The Dodgers’ offense is capable of domination, as is their starting rotation. Their playoff positioning is peerless. But their bullpen is their weak link. With two weeks until the trade deadline, they must make an addition to support Jansen if not supplant him.

  2. Oh yeah. We are definitely getting relief pitching in the next few weeks. Maybe even the next few days. Or hours.

  3. Okay KJ let’s see some more of that fancy pitching you had in Boston.

  4. Back to back HR’s to start it up again would work. Thunder and Lightening!

  5. Mills, the starter for the Cubs tonight, has already hit three batters, including old friends Farmer and Puig. He has yet to be ejected however.

  6. Finding another way to sqeeze every nickel they can from the game, the powers that be are planning on introducing advertising patches on player uniforms with the next CBA.Can’t wait to see the first patches for Man Wipes or Viagra. That said, I’d be totally on board with Chico’s Bail Bonds sponsoring a patch.

  7. Maybe Buehler and the Dodgers needed to have a 2 inning opener tonight.

  8. This may be going out on a limb, but I would suggest that Buehler doesn’t really have it tonight.

  9. Yikkes. Buehler only needs to give up a Grand Slam to complete his own nightmare cycle of home runs.

  10. Bellinger always starts every game as an interesting game. This game lost that distinction by the second Philly batter.
