Game 45, 2019

Padres at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PDT, TV: FSSD, SPNLA

Lefty Matt Strahm (1-2, 3.00 ERA) goes for the Padres and RHP Kenta Maeda (4-2, 4.03 ERA) does the same for the Dodgers. Strahm has been converted to full-time starter this season and has done well: he had a rough first outing but has a 1.98 ERA in the six starts since. Maeda had his best start of the season his last time out, giving up just one hit over six innings. He faced the Padres on May 5 and gave up four runs in six innings, including three who’d gotten on base via a walk.

Here’s Bellinger’s two-run HR (15) yesterday:

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1919 After 12 scoreless innings at Ebbets Field, the Reds score ten runs in the 13th inning to beat Al Mamaux and the Dodgers, 10-0. Cincinnati starter Hod Eller, who tossed a no-hitter in his previous start, is the beneficiary of the blowout.
  • 1956 Sal Maglie, obtained on waivers by Cleveland last season from the Giants, is shipped to the Dodgers for a hundred dollars after impressing Brooklyn in an exhibition game. The ‘Barber’ will post a 13-5 record along with a 2.89 ERA for the eventual NL Champs, finishing second to teammate Don Newcombe in the balloting for both the Cy Young and MVP awards.
  • 1998 On the day the Marlins trade Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Jim Eisenreich, and Manuel Barrios to the Dodgers for Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile, the team hangs on to beat the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, 8-7. In the first inning, the Fish connect for nine consecutive hits, a franchise record, and score seven runs, all without the help of their recently departed teammates.

Lineup when available.

  1. Ha! From the LA Times’ recap of last night’s game:

The key to his hit, Maeda said, was not trying to do too much.

“If there’s no runner on base, I’m just gonna go yard,” Maeda said of his hitting approach. “If there are runners in scoring position, my main focus is on getting them back home.”

“Go yard??” Our pitchers are swinging for the fences too? What was the launch angle on that 9-iron he hit for the RBI last night?

  2. After last night’s results, Dodgers have NL’s best record. In the AL, though, the Minute Maids have a slightly better percentage – same number of wins, but Dodgers have lost one more.

  4. I have not been following the Dodgers as closely over the past week or so. Just saw tonight about Urias. Very disappointing/troubling.

    • Can’t tell if Jansen was struggling or not. The hit was more based on questionable defense. And walking Machado is not the worse thing in the world. But yeah – it did feel a bit nervous watching him pitch.

      • Walking him is bad if there’s nobody on base. You want him to swing and, if he hits it out, he’s still not the tying run.

      • Only struggle I saw was between him and Martin. Just like with Barnes last night in pitch selection. They seem to want to set batters up, but Kenley was feeling his cutter and just wanted to rear back and throw.

        • Doc talked about that after the game. Wanting to get Kenley more on the same page with the catchers.

  5. Is it possible that Kershaw is only the 4th best pitcher on the team these days? Ryu, Buehler, Maeda, Kershaw?

  6. Full of popcorn after seeing “Captain Marvel” this afternoon, but have to go cook for Mom, who didn’t go to the theater with me. Keep winning, Dodgers!

  7. Sawx beat Rawx, so Dodgers can gain a game on Colorado (still the likeliest NL West contender, in my opinion).

    • I think San Diego is still a year away from really pushing the Dodgers. But you are not a believer in Arizona being a contender?

      • I don’t think the Snakes are deep enough and, if Greinke and Peralta go down (see Twitter link below), they’re in even more serious trouble.

  8. The Sawx appear to be in the process of giving another one away to the Rawx.

  9. Old friend Edwin Jackson, pitching for 14th team, is off to a shaky beginning v. the Gnats, but the Scrub Jays still lead 1-0. He gets Eva Longoria to GIDP, but then surrenders an RBI double to Phlablo.

  10. “On the day the Marlins trade Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles
Johnson, Jim Eisenreich, and Manuel Barrios to the Dodgers for Mike
    Piazza and Todd Zeile”

A day that will live in infamy.

      • Wasn’t very popular, but I would say that a worse trade was subsequently trading Sheffield.

      • From 1998 to 2007 ( his last year) Piazza produced WAR 28, Sheffield to 2009 WAR 40.

        • I can acknowledge that Sheffield was a great hitter, but Piazza’s trade symbolized the decline of the Dodgers that used to be.
