Game 16, 2019

Brewers at Dodgers, 6:10 PM PDT, TV: FSWI, SPNLA

RHP Zach Davies (1-0, 1.69 ERA) pitches for the Brew Crew and LHP Caleb Ferguson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) starts for the Dodgers. Davies will be making his third start after a year lost to back and shoulder injuries, while Ferguson is filling in for the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu. It’s expected that his fellow 22-year-old, RHP Dennis Santana, will come in to pick up several innings for the Dodgers as well.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1939 In a spring training game played in Norfolk, Virginia, Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig, with apparent muscle loss, especially around his shoulders, goes deep twice in a 14-12 exhibition loss against the Dodgers. The second and ninth-inning home runs will be the last round-trippers the ‘Iron Horse’ will ever hit.
  • 1993 Lee Smith passes Jeff Reardon to become the all-time major league saves leader when the Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 9-7. The right-handed reliever tosses a scoreless ninth inning at Chavez Ravine to record his 358th career save.
  • 2009 In the LA home opener, Orlando Hudson completes his cycle with a sixth inning triple down the right-field line in the team’s 11-1 rout of the Giants. The second baseman becomes the first Dodger to hit for the cycle at Dodger Stadium, and the first franchise player to accomplish the feat in a nine-inning game since Gil Hodges did it in 1949.
  • 2012 Aaron Harang, after surrendering a leadoff single to Cameron Maybin to start the game, strikes out the next nine consecutive Padres in L.A.’s 9-8 victory at Dodger Stadium. The 34 year-old right-hander’s performance is one more than Johnny Podres’ franchise mark of 8, but falls one short of the major league record held by Tom Seaver, who fanned 10 straight Friars for the Mets in 1970.

Lineup when available.

  1. After an 11-hour flight from Santiago, Alaska had canceled my connecting flight and then told me LATAM had booked me for tomorrow instead of today. It took me two hours to get my flight rebooked for this afternoon, but at least they gave me food vouchers. I’ll miss most of today’s game, though.

  2. Between the ump and Grandal the Dodgers are cooked. Pretty good pitcher as well.

  3. It appears that all my favourite sports teams are slumping – and losing – all at the same time. Dodgers, Raptors, Jets – I am looking at you!

  4. Well I would say I miss Turner Ward. But the Dodgers hitting issues seem to be the same as when he was around: Feast or Famine.

  5. Really disliking the umpire’s strike zone. All over the place, but mostly in the Brewers’ Favor. Or is it my eyes?

    • Pretty much for both teams, but Davies seemed to have the command to exploit it better.

  6. Well if you can’t have Charlie Brown pitch for your team then I guess having Schultz is the next best thing. Or was it Schulz? Ah nevermind – he was a San Fran fan anyways.

  7. On to the 9th. Any possible walk-off magic in the bats tonight? It would certainly feel and be unexpected!

  8. Tuning in late. Or rather typing in late as I have been able to listen to some of the game tonight. It would be nice for the Dodgers to show something here in the 8th and 9th.

  9. Dodgers: Omar Estevez, 2B (No. 20) — 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 BB (Double-A Tulsa)
Estevez went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk to extend his hitting streak, which dates back to last season, to 33 games. He’s hit safely in all eight games this year.

  10. Much is made of JT not having a dinger yet, but historically only 2 of his 93 HR as a Dodger have come before calendar May 1. Slow starter in that area? Of course, last year he was injured coming out of ST.

  11. Why no Pederson in left? He is hitting .282 against righties and has all five of his home runs against them. Taylor is 0-for-18 against righties this year. Davies is a righty. Is Pederson injured?

  12. 1. A.J. Pollock (R) CF
    2. Corey Seager (L) SS
    3. Justin Turner (R) 3B
    4. Cody Bellinger (L) RF
    5. Enrique Hernandez (R) 2B
    6. Max Muncy (L) 1B
    7. Chris Taylor (R) LF
    8. Austin Barnes (R) C
    9. Caleb Ferguson (R) P
