Braves at Dodgers, 6:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSO
The visiting Braves send RHP Julio Teheran (7-7, 4.69 ERA) out to keep their two-game winning streak going, and the Dodgers ask LHP Rich Hill (6-4, 3.55 ERA) to put a stop to their unaccustomed two-game losing streak.
Teheran has allowed two runs or fewer in his last three starts but lost the last one, even though he went six innings and gave up only five hits. Hill has gone 3-1 in his last five starts with a 1.74 ERA. Pitchers’ history:
- In seven games (five starts) against Atlanta, Hill is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 31 strikeouts against 10 walks in 33 1/3 innings, limiting hitters to a slash line of .192/.252/.258.
- Teheran hasn’t had much luck in six starts against the Dodgers. The righty is 0-5 with a 5.50 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 13 walks in 37 2/3 innings vs. the Dodgers.
This date in Dodgers’ history:
- 1913 In a game against the Superbas (Dodgers), Slim Sallee becomes the first pitcher in Cardinal history to steal home. In the third inning, the Redbird southpaw scores the first run in St. Louis’s 3-1 victory over Brooklyn at Ebbets Field.
- 1966 The Mets left fielder learns he is a new dad when the Dodger Stadium scoreboard relays the message, “Congratulations, Ron Swoboda. Your new son is born tomorrow morning”. Cecilia Swoboda gave birth to Chipper, the couple’s first child, at 1:05 a.m. eastern standard time, making it the next day on the West Coast.
- 2005 Yhency Brazoban records his 18th save when he works a perfect ninth inning as the Dodgers beat the Mets, 6-5. The Los Angeles freshman, who is filling in for injured closer Eric Gagne, breaks Steve Howe’s club rookie record for saves established in 1980.
In a non-Dodger historical episode of remarkable futility: in 1962 during a doubleheader with the Reds at Crosley Field, the Mets had four runners thrown out trying to score at home plate. It’s play of that sort that doomed them to a 120-loss season.
Lineup when available.

Chris Taylor just needs to hit a single and a double in his next two at bats on Sunday to hit for the cycle, kinda, sorta.
Good to awake to a Dodger win.
Nice turnaround, Dodgers.
Woo-HOO!!!
Who coaches first for LA now?
George Lombard.
Not sure how he caught the Dodgers eye. Previously baserunning coach for Bosox and Braves farm systems.
From Wikipedia: “George’s late mother, Posy, was a noted civil rights activist and associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
Taylor is just out of sight right now!
Like seeing Barnes getting more PA.
He’s hanging in there!
Excellent at bat.
Relentless, like the whole team.
Nice inning by Baez.
1.2.
Right!
Grandal has 3 infield singles in this series.
CT!!!!
Joc hits a screamer that results in a double play and Puig gets an RBI and base hit on a swinging bunt. One player happier than the other.
Hill could have kept his shutout through 5 if he hadn’t hit the pitcher.
Kemp playing well. The Dodgers have yet to replace his RH bat.
Sure. Though Matty has generated 0.3 WAR in his three and half years not wearing Dodger Blue, due to his alleged challenges on defense.
Maybe this is a better way of saying that–Kemp was the last power RH bat on the Dodgers.
I recall being concerned on that account when they lost both him and Hanley at the same time.
Chris Taylor says hi! SLG .518 compared to Matty’s .480 so far this season.
Now up to .529, apparently
Now .538
Able to watch a bit on Braves FSSE, which is something I don’t normally get to do. Haven’t seen Hill much; even tho he’s striking out hitters right and left, he seems to be fighting himself. Does he always pitch like this? Can’t argue with his results, but he seems about halfway hacked off about something. Pitching well but not really in command, seems.
He could improve on his pitch count.
Is he just missing with that way high FB which no one is going to swing at, or is it just a part of his style?
Reportedly Honey has his pitchers using the high FB a lot this season. Enough so that someone noticed and wrote an article about it a little while ago.
Yeah, saw that. Seems to be working well. But to work it kinda needs to look like the high FB might be a strike. Some Hill has thrown appear to be nearer wild pitches than strikes.
Is Hill using his new cutter much?
Did last couple of outings. Didn’t tune in enough to catch much of him tonight
And, he might want to not hit the opposing pitcher with an 1 – 2 count.
Always seems to be his demeanor on the mound.
Always looks like that on the mound – like his stomach has soured.
So maybe his issue is gas? 😉
Lack of. He only throws in low 90s.
Hill pitching with confidence tonight.
He’s putting together a string of quality starts.
Sounds like a backhanded compliment. Everyone hates QS stat. 😉
Nice to see the Dodgers with a lead, slim as it is.
Been a few days.
Tampa Bay blog suggests the Rays should pick up Romo. According to Steiner on the radio, they did, for cash and a player to be named later.
A long ways from Romo’s home.
Yeah, but paid work. https://twitter.com/kengurnick/status/888945140827471872
Work yes, was going to get paid anyway.
The alleged poor defender Kemp makes a sliding diving catch
Alleged!?
He always passed my eye test while flunking all the other tests.
3:30 in the afternoon here. I’m thinking about slicing and dicing potatoes and peppers and onions and mushrooms to go with my pound of hamburger.
Are you adding the potatoes in with the hamburger?
Yep. Hash night. It’s all in one pot.
I didn’t think about hash. Sounds good.
Season with (at least) S&P but with whatever other spices you like and feel appropriate. You could add whole kernel corn if you wanted to.
I mixed lots of things with hamburger in my college days which were not always appreciated by my roommates. Oregano was my go to spice. All the things you mentioned sounds good though.
There used to be a Hamburger Helper box that made hash, but it got discontinued years and years ago. I ate that fairly often in the Navy cooked in a skillet on my single-burner gas “stove” in Japan.
Saturday night date night makes it quiet here.
Or exercise night.
I save that for winter.
Cory !!!!
KK&K from Hill to start the game

April 18-20, 2008 weekend in Atlanta, when the Dodgers lost by the scores of 1-6, 1-4, and 1-6. The only still fledgling season turned sour as the team’s record turned from 7-8 to 7-11.
This was the year that Manny came in August to help the team fight the Snakes off. While they stayed about water in early August, they hit an 8 game losses streak that put them behind by 4.5 games, but this was quickly followed by an 8 game winning streak, including 4 against the Snakes, putting the Dodgers up, and fattening the lead to 4.5 games with a 14-2 record by mid-September and Manny contributing 7 dingers 21 rbi and OPSing 1.349. Won the West by 2 games, with 84 wins.
For those who’ve forgotten, here’s the movie from which that picture is taken.
Klayton’s rookie season. Nine years later, other than Dre, he is the only one still around. Well, Nomar as well.
