Cardinals at Dodgers, 5:05PM PT, TV: ESPN
It’s Sunday Night Baseball! If ESPN’s producers were smart they’d go back to something the network did years ago; it would pick up the local TV feed (if there is one) or ask the team broadcaster to come into the booth and do play-by-play so the national viewer could get a taste of what the home teams’ fans hear every day. Baseball lovers all over the country should get a half-inning of Vin Scully, particularly in his last year.
The Cardinals send out Mike Leake (1-3, 5.10 ERA) to try for his second win as a Redbird. It took him six starts to get his first, which he did his last time out. He’ll face the Dodgers’ Alex Wood (1-3, 4.58 ERA), who’s been a much better pitcher at home than on the road so far this season, posting a 1.33 ERA at Dodger Stadium and a horrible 8.05 ERA elsewhere.
In other baseball news and notes, congratulations to Marcus Stroman of the Blue Jays, who graduated and took part in the customary ceremonies at Duke today.
And then there’s this amazing scoring play in a softball game between Notre Dame and Army yesterday:

The Angles are so desperate for pitching that they seem likely to sign Lincescum: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/05/angels-signing-tim-lincecum-rumor.html
From my glass half-full perspective: Alex Wood pitched very well – I thought he could have gone another inning – and the team continues to hit for more power (in addition to Seager’s dingers, Puig just missed a three-run shot off Leake). Grichuk’s a really good outfielder, though.
Oy. This guy’s crazy.
Oh, well. Angels tomorrow night.
Oh well, no 4+1 that inning.
I’m not holding my breath.
Corey! Again!
Another 4+1 game! Come on!
Doesn’t look like the Dodgers night tonight. But I’ll take 2 out of 3 – even at home – vs the Cards.
Sunday night baseball seems to kill us more often than not.
It feels that way. I am too tired to look up the numbers right now, though.
It may well be, but the eye and the mind can play tricks on you, particularly in a sport were winning 6 out of 10 is considered to be excellent
Hernandez has all but disappeared as a hitter since his big game vs. Bumgarner.
Blanton not doing it tonight. Understatement.
He’d only had a couple of bad innings all year. Frustrating but to be expected.
So Kazmir is allowed to go 120 pitches but Wood only a bit over 90? Wood could have gone one more inning I think. Or is there something I missing?
Someone may ask Roberts that after the game.
I hope so.
May Day May Day!
Intentional walk backfired and led to an additional run. So they do a second one this inning. Not smart baseball.
Dratted Molina.
Going through the pen rather profligately here, Roberts.
Very nice recovery by Wood after first two batters reach.
No love for the Dodger hitters. Puig and Joc both wiffled the ball but both were snared.
Pug, not quite getting it all on that drive to center.
Just missed it. Maybe Joc can deliver.
Drat you, Grichuk!

Corey may have heard me.
This Dias kid is scary good. He may be Corey’s principal opposition for Rookie of the Year.
Don’t overlook Trevor Story.
The Gnats sweep the D-backs, and suddenly it’s all “Even year! Even year!” again. Ugh.
I heard them score in the 9th and then the D-Backs tried to come back in the bottom of the 9th and there was a really weird ending with a double-play called by New York upon review.
Vin Scully interviewed on the NYC ESPN radio outlet with Michael Kay.
That’s encouraging news about Ryu. I miss him. I hope tonight’s game isn’t affected by the ESPN curse. Go Dodgers! I’ll be exercising and cooks while j watch, so once again not posting as much. But I read every word you guys write!
I would not have believed that the band/artist most selected by Dodgers players as walk-up music or game-entering music would be…Led Zeppelin, by Kazmir, Van Slyke and Utley. Other music from my era: The Who (Ryu) and The Hollies (AJ Ellis).
Very dramatic music as compared to, say, hip hop .
It is nice to hear that the young players like real music too.
My sister and I are going to the Desert Concerts in October! Whoooo are you…!
Dodgers vs Cards on the Sunday night nationally televised game. That has usually meant pain for the Dodgers if I recall correctly.
Quiet!
I believe that they turned that around last year.
Now that you mention it that sounds right!
Imagine that Leake should turn around at some point, but as I recall he has a six-year $95 million contract.
The Redbirds didn’t know when to take a Leake.

Mr. Ryu makes a rehab start today for Rancho Cucamonga. Cross your fingers!
Brandon McCarthy is right behind Ryu. He’s expected to make some rehab starts after one more simulated game.

That’s encouraging.
Not throwing hard but, for the first time out, acceptable.
I often hate ESPN broadcasts because I’m blacked out for lack of cable. This one I’ll hate because it means they’re pre-empting Vin.
This one I hate because I would have been able to catch the usual Sunday early afternoon game here in Italy.
