Game 142, 2015

Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-D

Zack Greinke (16-3, 1.68 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. He last faced the D-Backs on April 12 when he shut them out for seven innings, giving up only five hits and getting his first win of the year. He’ll face the left-handed Patrick Corbin (5-3, 3.32 ERA), who missed the first three months of the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery in March of 2014. Corbin has won his last two starts, although he’s not gotten past the sixth inning in either one.

Lineup:

Bonus coverage: Cory Seager on his first big league home run.

Bonus bonus coverage: Padres at Giants.

  1. Keeping Zack has to be the Number One Priority this fall. Second would be at least one, better yet, two dependable pitchers. We don’t know how or if Ryu and Anderson will be next year. Woods may be something, may be not. Latos is…Gone. You have to wonder how he would have been without the tatoos. A little personal prejudice there.

  2. As the trade deadline approached, I leaned toward acquiring a big-name starter like Cueto. Fortunately, the Royals acquired him instead.

      • It’s not my money but, if I had the choice, I’d spend it on Greinke (or Price) rather than a question mark like Cueto.

        • I think Cueto could be had for less than that. But baseball execs offer crazy salaries so I wouldn’t bet against it.

      • That’s Clayton money. I could see the Dodgers offering something in that neighborhood. Issue is likely to be the years. His stuff is likely to age better than some of the fireballers. I tend to agree with Package that they are unlikely to pick up another ace if they get Greinke back.

        • Given that neither Price nor Cueto would involve surrendering a draft pick, I’m not so sure. They want to rebuild the farm with the highest possible draft picks, so they will not sign anybody who’s eligible for a qualifying offer (but they may make qualifying offers to guys like Kendrick, who can net them a high pick if he doesn’t accept).

        • If he didn’t opt bout (no chance), how much/how long is the existing contract? Three years, $72MM?? Would he go (or rather, stay) for 5/$150MM?

  3. We win. How’s this for random: Kenley’s era is the exact same as the length of game 2.56!

  4. Over at friends house today. Happy to see a 4-0 lead. Greinke is dealing! Yeah for winning road trips (regardless of today’s game).

  5. Puig is there today. Apparently he hasn’t been at Chase Field because he’s been working out on a special machine only available at Camelback. No drama or intrigue involved after all.

  6. I will be so relieved when the Dodgers clinch the division and Steiner can shut up (hopefully) about the Gnats until at least March.

  7. Could be the start of another Puig flap:

“Puig has been rehabbing at the Spring Training complex this weekend while the Dodgers played at Chase Field, but he hasn’t visited the club yet.

“I’m not sure why he’s not here,” Mattingly said. “I know he’s welcome over here.”

“Asked if Puig needed an invitation, Mattingly said: “Of course not. Nobody needs an invitation. Actually, I’m surprised he’s not here.”

  8. On my goal to ignore the NFL this season until the post-season (if then), I have now gone one half of the first Sunday of the season without any knowledge of that it happening in that league. Wish me luck.

      • Me, too. Not really my thing, except for the January I had Legionnaire’s disease. The Aistralian open and football games were the only two things I could watch. I was too sick to follow shows or read books. All I could handle was watching balls moving back and forth.

        • The only games I’ve watched in full in the last five years or so have been the Super Bowls, and that’s mostly because a friend has held a watch party for it every year since 1991 with one exception.

          • I haven’t seen a handegg game in person since high school. By pure coincidence, I’ve seen the odd few plays at friends’ houses over the years, but never for more than a few minutes.

    • Thus one of the goals is to keep winning and get home field advantage throughout the NLDS and NLCS. Unfortunately the Cardinals have seemingly locked that up, barring a semi-collapse on their part.

      • True, but the Cardinals’ lead over Pittsburgh was down to 2 1/2 games at the start of play today, so it is possible that the Cards could end up as a wildcard team and make it less likely that we would have to play them.

        • Looks like a dog fight out there. Cubs and Pitt have four games next week and then, while we are playing Pitt this weekend, Cards will be playing Cubs. A week later Cards and Pitt meet head on. The Cards are the ones to play outside their division for the last series, which will be three games at Atlanta.

  9. After today’s games, the magic number could be 13 or, if we’re especially fortunate, even 12.
