Phillies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA
17 of the next 20 games the Dodgers play are against the NL East. At the moment, only the Nationals and the Mets are above .500 in that division, and the Phillies are at the bottom with a 28-56 record.
The Phillies send out Sean O’Sullivan, who’s 1-6 with a 5.76 ERA. The Dodgers haven’t declared their starter as of 1:00PM PT; watch Twitter for news.
Update: It’ll be Eric Surkamp for the Dodgers. He’s got a career 4-3 record with a 6.20 ERA in the majors. His last big league appearance was with the White Sox in 2014. The Dodgers got him from the White Sox in May, and he’s had a 4-2 record with a 4.50 ERA in six starts for AAA Oklahoma City since then.
Lineup when available.
Pfft. Not Surkamp after all. I was lied to.
Tonight’s #Dodgers lineup vs. Phillies:
Pederson CF
Kendrick 2B
Turner 3B
Gonzalez 1B
Grandal C
Puig RF
Ethier LF
Garcia P
Rollins SS
NPUT
I feel sorry for Dodger pitchers the next 4 or 5 games, they used a week’s worth of runs last night.
Dodger hitters get to face the Fillies again, though.
Yeah, who scored SEVEN RUNS against them last night. The Dodgers have the uncanny ability to make any team look like the 1927 Yankees…
Surkamp will not pitch tonight.
And hopefully only in the minors hereafter, if last night is the best he can do.
I’d be pretty confident that’s the last time we’ll ever see him in a Dodger uniform.
I see you all lived up to expectations and got the save for Elysian Fields.
Likely Surkamp is gone. And likely to be forgotten, if last night is all he has. 4 Ks for him a bright spot, but…
Howell gets the win, lowers his ERA to 0.36.
Almost forgot there would be a winning pitcher in tonight’s game…
Gotta say that I find it comical that there were 367 pitches thrown in tonight’s game and that the winning pitcher only threw 6 of them. He threw 3% of the Dodger pitches and just over 1.5% of the total pitches, Dodger threw 186 – Phils threw 181.
Dodger pitchers faced one inning more’s worth of batters.
Kudos to JP. Big difference with his FIP (2.47), however. As well, his inherited Runners scoring rate is 26%, just a little bit better than league average.
Sorry for the quick departure, but I am tired. Don’t know if package is still around at almost 2:30 in the morning for him,
Have a nice night (what’s left of it), you all.
Easy as 1,2,3. Make that 1:23 AM my time…
Ha! Hope you don’t have to get up early on Tuesday (today, where you are).
No, I will be working my own hours at home tomorrow…
As Mel Allen used to say, “How about that!” Five games up on the Giants.
You misspelled “Gnats.”
We win!
Woo-HOO!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like I should get a medal after this one.
Would you settle for another hot dog?
And now Dr. Jekyll – I mean Jansen – is here to replace Mr. Hyde.
Jansen had been reminding me of Stanhouse lately.
Harsh words!
I know, but it’s been nerve-wracking with him the last few times out.
Goodness gracious, Kenley. This is a save situation. Let’s turn two.
Come ON, pitchers!
Contagious throwing of balls out here tonight.
Okkkay, Kkkenley!
Grandal: “I’m taking matters into my own hands. Let’s end this thing.”
MLBTV often picks up the end of a late night West Coast game and broadcasts it. It may do so tonight.
Thus far it has not.
How deep was Howard’s fly ball?
In front of the track.
Medium only. Lazy fly, not close to track.
Heart attack time.
Phew!
Deja vue all over again. Get this out!
Oh man. Can’t anybody pitch?
Maddening!
I’ll bet Vinnie’s tired, too.
I just ate a hot dog at 10:45 pm. Shoot me now.
Nobody’s giving up easily here.
OK, I was able to check in long enough to get you guys a 3-run lead. Maybe you all can hold on and get the save.
“Save–Elysian Fields 1” needs to be in the pitching box score later on. ;-])
Huh? Pls explain! Oh, wait. I see.
That this Elysian Fields site deserves the save if the Dodgers win.
Don’t stop watching yet.
Yeah. Pitched in a lot of tough spots, gritted it out, and made quality pitches.
Now all we need is some pitching to shut the Phillies down.
This game could go four hours. The Mets-Giants game went 2:20.
Sixth time this season we’ve reached double figures in runs scored.
7 earned runs given up but 10 Phillies phanned. More odd numbers in an odd game.
Cycle time…
The linescore is actually a beautiful combination of 3’s, 2’s, 1’s and 0’s.
Fun game, actually.
Oh sure, you say that now… 🙂
Our rookie All Star joins the hit parade tonight.
Yeah!!!
What? Situational hitting?
Perhaps Rollins should always bat behind the pitcher’s spot. LOL.
Oh yes!
And he is!
JRoll’s chance to be a hero.
Howell ERA 0.36 after 24 innings. Insane number.
He hasn’t pitched nearly that well.
Okay Callaspo – we need another hit right here.
All those hard hit fouls, and he squibs it!
Well hit, Yasiel!
This is exciting: so far the Dodgers are winning 135 pitches to 134! A grand total of 269 pitches so far in the game!
I could have told you that.
Have you been counting?
No, that was a lame attempt at a joke.
I’m sure it has felt more like 300 already…
How many pitches now?
Dodgers winning 168-167. 335 total.
Hey RBI – how would you feel about extra innings tonight?!
I’d rather hang from my heels in a cave of bats…unless it means we win.
You are a trooper! Boy scout/girl guide badge for you in the works if you make it to the end!
Can Howell stop the bleeding?
And the cry goes up in the crowd, one that seemed unfathomable just a few moments earlier: “Bring back Surkamp!”
Funny, but not…
Anybody out there still up? Dying here!
Nothing coming easy.
Every at bat on both sides is like pulling teeth.
Giants now at .500. So do we remove our 3-9 record against them from the column of how we’ve done vs. teams with winning records?
Certainly after they lose tomorrow.
Okay. Stop them now, please.
Longggggg gammmmmme.
Let’s go Dodgers!
7-6. Wowsers.
High pitch count for O Sullivan.
Gnats go silently in ninth, lose 3-0.
Seven defeats in a row.
It couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.
And since you and I live in their territory, it is that much sweeter.
I live in A’s territory, but there’s still a Gnatfan presence here.
Mets now up, 3-0, still batting in the 9th in San Francisco.
From a Gnatblog: “The meat of our batting order is more like soy…”
Is that better or worse than tofu?
Mets leading 2-0 in the ninth.
Pulling a pitcher who’s pitching to a pitcher?
That seems a bit unfair to Surkamp – but helpful for Peralta.
Grandal!
Tie game! Nice shot by Grandal!
Catcher’s interference. But will it actually help the Dodgers taking the bat out of AGon’s hands?
Yes.
Okay this is definitely the inning to get back in the groove: Kendrick, Turner, Gonzo and Grandal due up.
Double by Kendrick. Need to get a hit now with RISP. Please.
You nailed it!
It felt right.
If Beachy is not better when he comes up than Surkamp, we have some problems.
Joc is a wizard with the glove in the outfield and a magician with the bat at the plate – he is making his batting average disappear!
Hitless in July. 0-for-his last-16.
The Mets-Giants game (scoreless) is already in the 8th inning. Didn’t it begin about the same time that ours did?
Why no pinch-hitter, Don?
Bah, humbug.
I see the Mets are suddenly having trouble scoring runs again because they are no longer playing the Dodgers. At least the Giants are still rolling on their current streak.
I’m sure Surkamp’s mother thinks he is pitching well. But then again she is a Phillies fan. (jk)
Make that…36.
Surkamp’s ERS is 27.
Surkamp is worse than bad. He’s horrendous.
RBI: The Dodgers should have sold tickets at 50% off tonight.
Correct me if I am wrong. But I don’t recall the Dodgers ever going with this kind of bullpen committee pitching before, and certainly not twice, during a regular-season game that had meaning. Given Mattingly’s predilection for using the bullpen too much anyway, what kind of bullpen shape will this leave us in for the remaining six games before the All Star break? What was wrong with bringing up a Triple-A starting pitcher and hoping to get five or six innings from him? Mattingly’s managing strategies continue to amaze me.
All the other “depth” guys had already pitched when they found out FrÃas had to go on the DL.
I am not being sarcastic here, but is this the best we could have done on the mound tonight?
In terms of who was available with sufficient rest, apparently, yes.
It’s the FO that brings up players, not Donnie.
Regardless of who is making the decision, this is something I have not seen before in my many decades of being a Dodgers fan.
Story is that all other feasible options are on the DL or recently pitched.
The DL part they can’t control. The “recently pitched” part they could have.
Hmm – I’m not sure if Surkamp is going to pitch too many innings tonight. 3 batters, 3 runs.
Too many balls, so he served it up to Howard.
I hate to say but I called that one.
Well – they got one at least.
Okay. New pitcher…
Puig re-starts things for the Dodgers in the second.
Good start!
Unusual to have the two righties in a row at the top of the lineup
So, I guess the Dodgers are hoping for 3 innings from Garcia? Then bring in Surkamp for another 3 or 4? Is that best case scenario tonight from the Dodgers point of view?
Kershaw a final vote candidate for the ASG.
If the ASG had any integrity, he should be chosen and should go. But it doesn’t, and he shouldn’t.
Going up against 3 other pitchers: Cueto (Reds), Martinez (Cards), Familia (Mets) and also Tulo (Rockies). My guess is Martinez or Tulo go.
The ASG is my mid-season break from baseball. The last good one took place in 1994.
So, I have tickets to the game tonight. Yimi Garcia starting? I got nothing to say about that, except this should be an interesting game. Any bets on how we’ll do?
Regardless of who’s pitching – the pleasure and joy of going to a game still strikes me. Enjoy!
That is very, very true!
Yep. If only the managers would dump the modern canned music and let the organists play, and let the background noise be “Cold beer here! Cold beer!” and “Red hots! Gitcher Red Hots!”
I’m getting old.
Joc, Zach, Agon and Grandal named to NL All Stars.
No Kershaw. He’s still the best, but the breather might do him good.
Not only is Yimi starting, he is batting 8th…..
Yimi to start!
Very strange decision.
The whole bloody bullpen to finish…
