We’ve got some really big surf this week

I’m talking 30-40 foot waves. Here’s a slideshow from one of our TV stations.

The surf may be big enough and well-formed enough to hold the Eddie Aikau contest on Thursday and if not then possibly Friday. The contest is invitation-only for 28 of the best big-wave surfers in the world, named for a man who was a champion surfer himself until his death in 1978. He was lost at sea while trying to paddle for help after the Polynesian voyaging raft Hokulea capsized off the coast of Moloka’i on its third deep-ocean sail.

Seeing the pictures reminded me of the theme song from the 1966 surf movie The Endless Summer, which I saw in a theater in Annandale, Virginia, a long way from any surf.
