Had I but known!

When I started out managing computer systems for The Honolulu Club back in 1980 I was an absolute newbie in a lot of ways, not the least of which was programming. The Club bought a software package that was in use at a country club in Delaware and we immediately discovered it served different needs than the ones we had, so I had to learn to modify code and I had to learn from scratch. Fortunately we had a good consultant who was willing to write some and teach me some.

Anyway, I never did become very good at it. I got by and the Club got by, but I would never claim to be a really good programmer.

Had I been told this, however, I’d either have worked harder or quit my job within a year.
