Yet another 1%-er sounds off

This time it’s about race, not about the plot of the lower class to take his money.

The LA Clippers NBA team has an owner named Donald Sterling, and he’s a sleazy fat old slumlord of a man. That in itself is distasteful but not worth discussing. However, the other day he sounded off to his (mixed-race) girlfriend (who is not the woman to whom he’s married), telling her not to post pictures of herself posing with black people to her Instagram account and to stop bringing black people to the team’s games. Amazingly, the picture that set him off was one of her with Magic Johnson, who is probably the most widely-loved man in Los Angeles.

So okay, he’s a bigot, and a fabulously wealthy one. But the reason these comments really hit the fan was that they were released during the first round of the NBA playoffs, when there are sixteen teams playing to see who moves on to the next round. Oh, and if you have ever looked at the racial makeup of the NBA’s players, it’s somewhere around 75% to 80% African-American. As you might expect, those gentlemen weren’t very amused.

So now all the sports talking heads are muttering that he should be banished from the sport somehow. Well, guys, find a buyer with a billion bucks or so to buy the team and its share of the arena in which it plays. Without that, nothing’s going to happen to Mr. Sterling, regrettably.
