Unlike Father, this is the son

How can the son of a noted and much-admired liberal like Mario Cuomo become a Blue Dog Democrat who would stand with hedge fund managers and against unions? It’s hard to believe, but that’s clearly what Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has done. In a recent fight about locating and funding charter schools in NYC Cuomo came down on the side of the charters and against the newly-elected Mayor of the city, forcing the mayor to give up his positions.

The proposed legislation included provisions to reverse Mr. de Blasio’s decisions on school space, and it required the city to provide public classrooms to new and expanding charter schools or contribute to the cost of renting private buildings. It also suggested increasing per-pupil funding for charter schools and allowing them to operate prekindergarten programs.

So now the charter schools can continue to take space in public schools or, if they have to rent space, the public schools have to help pay for the space. Hey, those kids in public schools wouldn’t have any need of that rent money, right?

Jeebus. If Cuomo plans to get into the Democratic Presidential primaries in 2016, he’s certainly burned some bridges.
