Aussie conservatives like American ones

Tony Abbott, the Liberal-National Party candidate (that’s the equivalent of the Tories in the UK and the Republicans in the US) for the Prime Minister’s job in the Australian election recently said:

There’s almost nothing wrong with Australia right now that wouldn’t be improved by a change of government. We will scrap the carbon tax, get the budget back in the black, and we will stop the boats.”

Right. Australia’s just had its hottest year ever, so scrapping a per-ton tax on those who release carbon into the atmosphere is obviously the right way to go.

That budget deficit? It’s currently at 1.8% of GDP, a number most countries would die for.

Stop the boats? Easily translated as “we hates immigrants, precious, yes we does.” How many illegal immigrants land on Australian shores?

According to Australia’s Department of Immigration, this year 218 boats carrying 15,182 passengers were listed as irregular maritime arrivals as of July, 2013 — most of them refugees from Iraq, Iran, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh seeking asylum.

Fifteen thousand immigrants? Is that all? You have to be kidding me.

For good measure, Abbott and his party oppose gay marriage too.

Conservatives appear to be equally nasty and stupid no matter which hemisphere they’re in.

  1. Yeah, I play a game online where I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing many a strange thing from Australians… very much like you’d hear attributed to rural southern minimally educated racist Christian Republican Americans.
I guess they’re mad that people have health care and a non slave minimum wage. I don’t know.

Then there’s that rich Australian woman who wants to get rid of the minimum wage so she can pay 80 cents a day & have her Australian company compete with African workers or something. Very bizarre.
