Florida Gulf Coast again?

Call it the little school that could, I guess. Today Florida Gulf Coast University, a school which nobody west of Pensacola or north of Tallahassee ever heard of, defeated San Diego State today, two days after beating one of the NCAA’s royalty in Georgetown, and it’s now the first 15th seeded team ever to make it to the Sweet Sixteen next weekend. They did it by going on a 17-0 run in the second half to take a 15-point lead, and SDSU could never recover.

The final score was 81 – 71, but it wasn’t as close as that looks. San Diego State hit a couple of meaningless 3-point shots with less than a minute left to shorten the score, but by that time the game was over.

Wow.

Bonus: Deadspin has compiled a video of a lot of the dunks FGCU has made during its conference tournament and the first two games of the NCAAs.

  1. How ’bout them Shockers? They’re the last Kansas team standing, ARGH! (I’m a U. Kans. Lawrence grad, but at least the Shockers are a dear friend’s home team.
