Uh-oh, pet edition

I called the Humane Society to get our name put onto the registry for the chip the cat already has implanted, and the lady on the phone there said “that number’s registered with us.” In fact, it was implanted in 2008, which is funny, because the vet I took her to on Wednesday guesstimated her age at 1 1/2 to 2 years old. I told the Humane Society lady that I’d been told the chip was not registered with them by the vet’s office I took the cat to, but if she belonged to someone then the Society should let them know she was here. The lady said there was no lost animal report on file for the beast, and the registered owner is in Waipahu, six or seven miles away. Given the cat’s condition when it arrived in our yard, it’s hard to believe she traveled those miles without losing some weight and getting her coat thoroughly matted, and that wasn’t the case. I’m thinking she was dumped.

Anyway, the Society left a message on the registered owner’s voice mail, so we’ll see. We don’t particularly want to give her up, but if she’s got a pining owner then she should go back there.

  1. Hmm. For your sake, I hope the purported “owners” (as if a cat could ever be owned) do not respond. For kitty’s sake, I hope they weren’t meanies. Please keep us posted.

  2. I hope she remains with you where she is loved and cared for. I picked up a dog on the highway right before Christmas. Deaf, older little pom. No owner ever claimed her. The vet said she was an abused breeding dog, dumped when she got too old. No problem. She is in a loving home now. So, I hope your sweet kitty stays with you.

  3. Oh nooooo, fingers crossed no one claims her. She belongs to you cause after all she picked YOU and your home, you did not choose her!! Please keep us all posted though,

  4. I knew a fair number of people in Italy who would have a pet land on their door… same thing would happen, they were chipped, not reported missing, owner would be contacted and then guess what? Yeah the owner would say, “Oh well, gee, actually my wife/son/daughter/husband/aunt who visits once a year, is really allergic, they can just keep the cat/dog.” Yep, dumped.
As to the age… we had a stray once that lived outside. She didn’t like coming into the house. She wanted a warm bed in the garage, food, water, and an occasional scratch behind the ears. We’d had her like this for three year and then we were moving. So, we made her officially ours, took her to the vet etc. He estimated her age at between one and two. Well, I’d had her for three years and she’d been totally grown then, she had to be at least five. That’s when I realized that the term “estimate” is more like “total, random guess.”
