Woods wins, and other sports news

Yeah, yeah, there’s a basketball tournament going on, but that’s still got a week to go. It will have Kentucky, Ohio State, Louisville, and Kansas in the Final Four. That’s pretty much college basketball’s elites right there. Kentucky’s been to the Final Four 15 times, Ohio State 11, Louisville 9, and Kansas 14. Occupy the NCAA!

Arguably at least as interesting a sports event is that Tiger Woods won his first tournament in nearly three years, and he did it right before The Masters.

I don’t think Tiger’s a particularly good man. In fact, I think he’s an idiot in a lot of ways, but his golf talent is undeniable, and the PGA Tour really needs his presence as a contender to keep the purses up and the ratings high. Face it, is the average Joe Kordel-drinker (does Joe Sixpack watch golf?) going to tune in to golf on Saturdays and Sundays to watch Luke Donald, Kyle Stanley, or Johnson Wagner? (Those three guys lead the PGA Tour Money List this weekend.) People might tune in to see Rory McIlroy, but not in the numbers the networks want or need to sell all the products advertised during the broadcasts.

CBS is licking its chops thinking of Tiger Woods going into The Masters the week of April 5 with a hot hand.
