Thou shall not tick off your donors

If you’re curious as to the potential marketing disaster the Susan G. Komen Foundation has just inflicted on itself by its denial of future funding to Planned Parenthood, TBogg has an excellent explanation. He knows a little about the direct marketing business, and he thinks there’s almost a complete overlap between donors to Komen and PP. He speculates that Komen may have just lost that entire group.

I agree. I’ve been in that direct-mail business on a small scale, and it’s a real crapshoot. Once you find a new subscriber/donor you desperately want to keep him or her, and you really really don’t want to do anything which might give him or her reason to take the money elsewhere. Komen has just done exactly that.

  1. A very interesting analysis, and I’m pretty sure he’s right. You notice some of Komen’s top people are already starting to abandon ship.

  2. I always thought Soul Train sucked because All the performers Needed to lip sync. My parents employed to watch Solid Gold of course, if i was bored I’d watch that mess. But, I believed Arsenio was funny-ish.
