Those are concrete footings which are used in post and pier construction. This is a common method out here, particularly on sloped land where pouring concrete slabs would take huge amounts of framing and cement. 4×4 posts will be placed on the footings and 4×8 beams will be attached to those to support the new decking material. We decided on Trex decking, which is a composite of recycled wood and plastic. It requires a lot less maintenance than natural wood, which often needs a new stain every year in this climate.
