Game 103, 2015

Angels at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSW

Clayton Kershaw brings his hopefully-comfortable hip and his 29-inning scoreless streak to bear against the Angels’ Hector Santiago, who’s 7-4 with a 2.43 ERA. Santiago had a rough outing in his last game but had a 1.13 ERA over his previous five starts.

Believe it or not, the Angels have always given Kershaw trouble (relatively speaking). He’s 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA against them; that’s the highest ERA he has against any team he’s faced more than three times.

There will probably be moves later in the day to get to 25 players on the active roster, and there might even be another transaction or two. Who knows?

Game 100, 2015

Dodgers at Mets, 10:10AM PT, TV: SPNLA, TBS

New dad Zach Greinke shortens his 3-day paternity leave to pitch against the Mets’ Jacob deGrom. Both men pitched in the All-Star Game 10 days ago. Greinke is 9-2 with a 1.30 ERA and 117 Ks on the year; deGrom is 10-6 with a 2.18 ERA and 120 Ks. Greinke has a 43 2/3-inning consecutive scoreless streak going, while deGrom has given up 3+ earned runs only once since mid-May and has walked only nine men and struck out 83 in those 11 starts. He’s 7-2 over that span of games.

Game 98, 2015

Dodgers at Mets, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN

In Zack Greinke’s absence (no official word yet from the Dodgers about any newborn child) rookie Ian Thomas starts for the Dodgers against Jon Niese of the Mets. Thomas came over from the Braves with Callaspo in return for Juan Uribe in a six-player deal at the end of May of this year. This will be his first major league start after 23 relief appearances. Niese has been excellent over the past two months; he’s gone at least seven innings in five of his last seven starts while compiling a 2.00 ERA. Overall he’s 5-8 with a 3.36 ERA.

Update: Congrats to Mrs. Greinke and her husband Zack: 19″, 6 pounds, 5 ounces baby boy!

Game 93, 2015

Dodgers at Nationals, 10:35AM PT, TV: SPNLA, TBS, MASN

Two of the best pitchers in the game this season have at it: Zack Greinke (8-2 with a microscopic 1.39 ERA) for the Dodgers versus Max Scherzer (10-7 with a 2.11 ERA) for the Nats. Greinke has a 35 2/3-inning scoreless streak (the HR in the All Star Game doesn’t count). Scherzer has a different kind of streak: he hasn’t walked a batter since June 14.

Some interesting things about these teams:

Over the past two seasons, the Dodgers and Nationals have been two of baseball’s best teams after the All-Star break. In 2013 and ’14, the Dodgers were a league-best 85-48 (.639) from the Midsummer Classic forward. The Nationals were 83-53 (.610), third-best.

Another thing we Dodger fans might not have realized: since Adrian Gonzalez came to the Dodgers in mid-2012 no one in the NL has knocked in more runners than he has. How many? 296.

Game 87, 2015

Phillies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Zack Greinke brings his 27 2/3 scoreless-inning streak to the game against Severino Gonzalez. Greinke is 7-2 with a 1.48 ERA and headed for the All Star Game. Rookie right-hander Gonzalez rejoins the Phillies’ rotation for Thursday night’s series finale against the Dodgers. He is 3-2 with an 8.28 ERA in six starts and has been unable to pitch more than 5 1/3 innings in any of them, but the Phillies would rather give him another look than right-hander Kevin Correia, whom they designated for assignment Tuesday.

Game 82, 2015

Mets at Dodgers, 4:15PM PT, TV: Fox

Zack Greinke looks to continue his amazing season (6-2, 1.58 ERA, and he’s probably earned about four more wins) against the Mets’ Matt Harvey, who’s having a good year himself (7-5, 2.99 ERA). Harvey has allowed only two runs in his last 19 2/3 innings, and Greinke has a 20 2/3 scoreless inning streak going.

Reminds me of a song:

I updated Rule #5 to include religion, following cocktail party etiquette:

Keep conversation clean, avoiding any sexual innuendoes. Excessive flirting is not appropriate, especially at a business-related affair. Also, steer clear of taboo topics like dieting, health (yours or theirs), the cost of anything, malicious gossip (yes, you do know when it’s malicious), religion and politics. Most important, don’t leave someone hanging. Close a conversation before moving on to another person or group.

Game 77, 2015

Dodgers at Marlins, 10:10AM PT, TV: SPNLA

Zack Greinke (5-2, 1.70 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts, but he hasn’t gotten a win in either game. The Dodgers’ offense remains mired in a team-wide slump, at least when Kershaw and Greinke start. The Marlins send rookie Jose Urena to the hill. He’s 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA, but 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA at home.

The Marlins have their own scoring problems, now that it’s known they won’t have Major League home run leader Giancarlo Stanton for about a month due to a broken bone in his wrist.

The Marlins have declared it Josh Beckett Appreciation Day. Beckett pitched the last three injury-plagued seasons of his career with the Dodgers, but he broke in with the Marlins in 2001 and pitched the next four seasons for them, including their 2003 World Series-winning season when he was named MVP of the Fall Classic.

Game 72, 2015

Dodgers at Cubs, 5:05PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Two righthanders battle one another this evening. Zack Greinke hasn’t gotten a win since May 5; he’s pitched well enough to win in most outings since, but his team’s lack of offense has let him down. He’s still 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA. He’ll face Jason Hammel, who’s also 5-2 and has a 2.89 ERA.

Turner gets a day off.

Game 67, 2015

Rangers at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSW

Zack Greinke (5-2, 1.95 ERA) is asked once again to stop a Dodgers’ losing streak, this time a three-game one to the Texas Rangers. The Rangers will send out Anthony Ranaudo, who’s only made one (unsuccessful) MLB start this season back in April. He’s been down at AAA Round Rock of the PCL, where he’s compiled a 7-1 record and a 2.45 ERA in eleven starts in 2015.

Game 62, 2015

Dodgers at Padres, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD, MLB (free game)

Zack Greinke is really hard on the NL West in general and the Padres in particular.

He’s 22-2 with a 2.06 ERA against division rivals since joining the Dodgers, and 5-1 against San Diego. His only decision against the Padres this year is a win and he’s allowed them two runs in 20 2/3 innings.

He starts today against Ian Kennedy, who is 0-2 with an 8.71 ERA against the Dodgers this year and 5-9 in his career with a 4.50 ERA. Overall, Greinke is 5-1 with a 1.92 ERA this season and Kennedy is 3-5 with a 6.48 ERA.

Okay, on paper the Dodgers should win. That’s why they play the games, as Chris Berman used to say about some NFL mismatch.
