The home team sends RHP Joe Ross (5-7, 4.02 ERA) to the hill. The visiting Dodgers haven’t yet announced who their starter might be, although LHP David Price (2-0, 3.86 ERA) seems to be the likely choice.

  • 1998 The National Baseball Facility of Ireland, considered the main home of the Irish National baseball team, officially opens in Corkagh Demesne Park in Clondalkin, West Dublin when U.S. Ambassador Jean Kennedy throws out the ceremonial first pitch. Dodger owner Peter O’Malley played an instrumental role in the construction of the diamonds now known as the Fields of Dreams, which includes a regulation sized adult field and an international standard Little League field.
  • 2006 Nomar Garciaparra ties the major league record for being hit by a pitch in a game as he is plunked three times by three different Diamondback pitchers in a 10-4 Dodger victory. The LA first baseman is the first National Leaguer to equal the mark, both literally and figuratively, since the 2000 season, when Astros outfielder Richard Hidalgo got thwacked thrice in a game in April.

It’s a bullpen game for the Dodgers LHP Alex Wood (0-1, 4.32 ERA) takes the hill for the Dodgers. The Rockies give the ball to RHP Ryan Castellani (1-2, 4.46 ERA), who walked six Angels and hit one in 5 2/3 innings in his last start but still gave up just one unearned run in a no-decision. Wood has gone longer than one inning only once this year, and that was in July. Don’t expect him to be around too long.

Here’s the Dodgers’ six-run seventh inning yesterday:

If I were Josh Sborz I’d be getting tired of commuting between USC’s campus and wherever the Dodgers are. He was just optioned back there and Mitch White was called up.

  • 1964 Willie Davis broke a 16-inning, 3–3 stalemate between the Phillies and Dodgers at Dodger Stadium with a walk-off steal of home. With two outs in the bottom of the 16th, Davis reached on an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch by Philadelphia’s Jack Baldschun, then stole home on reliever Morrie Steevens.

The visiting Padres send RHP Chris Paddack (2-1, 3.18 ERA) out to do battle with the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urias (1-0, 2.40 ERA). Paddack went six innings against the Dodgers ten days ago, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking none. Urias had two good outings to start the season but could only go four innings against the Giants in his last start. He allowed only three hits and one run in that game, but it took him 78 pitches to get that far and only 48 of them were strikes.

Gonsolin went a solid 4 2/3 innings and the bullpen held the Padres off in yesterday’s game:

The 12-year veteran infielder, who is tossed by home plate umpire Tom Hallion for arguing a called third strike in the fourth inning, is restrained by first base coach Mariano Duncan when he continues to shout and points his bat toward the umpire.

Opening Day, 2020

It’s the first game of this bizarre 60-game season, in which each win and each loss has much more weight than in most seasons. Lose ten straight in a 162-game season and you’ve got a chance to make it up; do so in a 60-game season and you’re probably dead. If last year had been a 60-game season, the World Series Champion Nationals would not have made the playoffs. They were 27-33 in their first 60 games.

The Dodgers send LHP Clayton Kershaw to the mound for his ninth Opening Day start in ten years. The 32-year-old was 16-5 last season with the highest ERA of his career, a whopping 3.03. He’ll face the Giants’ RHP Johnny Cueto, who was 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA last year in four September starts after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2018.

In a 22-4 rout of the Devil Rays at Fenway Park, the Red Sox shortstop homers three times in two frames – two two-run homers in the second and a grand slam in the third.

LHP Brendan McKay (2-4, 5.27 ERA) goes for the Rays while RHP Tony Gonsolin (3-2, 2.83 ERA) starts for the Dodgers. McKay is regarded as the Rays’ top pitching prospect; they’ve gone 4-6 when he’s started, so they’re not helping him out much. Gonsolin has been a pleasant surprise to the fans if probably not to Dodgers’ management. He’s made appearances as a starter (10 walks in 28 innings) and as a reliever (no walks in seven). He came in and pitched three quality innings after Rich Hill’s forced departure last week.

RHP Dustin May (0-1, 3.18 ERA) takes the mound in Florida. He’ll face Hawai’i boy RHP Jordan Yamamoto (4-3, 4.17), who started off in the big leagues like a house afire but has cooled off in his last four outings: he’s given up four ER or more in each of those games. May will be making the third start of his career: he’s gone 5 2/3 innings in each of his first two, striking out ten and walking just one.

How good is the Dodgers’ rotation? So good that Kershaw is only the third-best pitcher in it. Partly because of that, the Dodgers are having their best season since they moved to Los Angeles. “But, but, the bullpen!” Well,

If there’s a weakness on this team, it’s clearly the bullpen, though having the ninth-best bullpen ERA (per Fangraphs) isn’t exactly the disaster the narrative around the relievers might have you think.

The Halos send RHP Félix Peña (7-3, 4.92 ERA) to the mound to face the Dodgers’ RHP Kenta Maeda (7-6, 3.71 ERA). Peña gave up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings his last time out, but in the start before that he threw seven innings of no-hit ball. Maeda’s last start was washed away by a lengthy rain delay; in his last 12 starts he’s got a 3.20 ERA, although he gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings to the Angels on June 11.

The Padres’ Dinelson Lamet (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery 15 months ago. In his rookie year (2017) he was 7-8 with a 4.57 ERA, but that was a 71-91 Padres team without Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado, among others. He’ll face the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-2, 1.83 ERA), who had his first bad outing of the year his last time out against the Rockies at Coors Field. He took the loss in that game; it’s the first game decision he’s had since June 4, a win against the D-Backs.

Book plug: I have this on my Kindle and dip into it during baseball season — “The Giants and the Dodgers: Four Cities, Two Teams, One Rivalry”

Tonight’s episode of that rivalry pits two of the best pitchers in the game against one another. Their respective won-loss records are highly unusual. Madison Bumgarner of the Giants is 4-4 with a 2.69 ERA, while Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers is 5-5 with a 2.58 ERA. Each pitcher has spent a lot of time on the disabled list this season; Bumgarner didn’t make his debut until June, while Kershaw lost seven weeks in May and June. In MadBum’s last start he went seven innings, gave up five hits and no runs to the Astros and got no decision. Kershaw’s last start was against the Athletics; he went six innings, gave up six hits and two runs and also got no decision.

In his 30-game pitching career against the Dodgers, Bumgarner has gone 15-10 with a 2.60 ERA. In his 43-game pitching career against the Giants, Kershaw has gone 22-10 with a 1.60 ERA.

You know it’s National Lefthanders Day, right? Not only does the game feature two of the best lefties the NL has to offer, the Dodgers found a pair on their dugout bench.

The Dodgers activated RHP Eric Goeddel from the DL and optioned Pat Venditte to Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers send RHP Ross Stripling (8-2, 2.08 ERA) to the hill to face the Phillies’ RHP Zach Eflin (7-2,3.15 ERA). Stripling threw six shutout innings against the Padres in his last start before the All Star Break, while Eflin has been on a hot streak. He’s 6-0 in his last seven starts, putting up a 2.32 ERA in that stretch.
