Game 98, 2022

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:30 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet RM, SPNLA

LHP Tyler Anderson (10-1, 2.79 ERA) pitches for the visiting Dodgers and José Ureña (1-2, 3.13 ERA) does so for the Rockies. Anderson was an All Star but didn’t make an appearance in the game; in his one start since he went six innings, gave up four hits and one run and got no decision. Ureña was DFAed by the Brewers in May when roster sizes were reduced. He signed a minor league deal with the Rockies almost immediately and was called up in July; he’s made four starts since. In those starts he gave up 9 runs on 23 hits in 24 innings.

Game 5, 2020

Dodgers at Astros, 6:10 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet-SW, FS1, SPNLA

The Dodgers’ RHP Walker Buehler makes his first start of the season. Also making his first start of the year is the Astros’ LHP Framber Valdez, who’s in his second full season in the big leagues.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the Astros’ sign-stealing methods of 2017 were revealed in the off-season.

A number of Astros players and coaches apologized when spring camps opened in February, but many, including Dodgers center fielder and reigning National League MVP Award winner Cody Bellinger, were critical of the team’s response.

Many of the core players [from the 2017 World Series] on both sides remain the same, including Bellinger, Corey Seager, Justin Turner and Kenley Jansen for the Dodgers, and José Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer and Alex Bregman for the Astros.

Game 107, 2019

Dodgers at Nationals, 10:35 AM PDT, TV: MASN, SPNLA, TBS

RHP Walker Buehler (9-1, 3.23 ERA) goes for win number ten in a day game against the Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg (13-4, 3.37 ERA), who’s tied for the MLB lead in wins with Justin Verlander of the Astros and Lance Lynn of the Rangers. Buehler’s last (and only) loss was May 18, while the Nats have won the last six games Strasburg’s started.

Here is young Mr. Smith’s 3-hit 6-RBI game. He spread the wealth: the HR and the sac fly were to the right-center gap while the two-run double was to left-center.

Game 105, 2018

Dodgers at Braves, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: SPNLA, FSSO MLBN (out-of-market only)

Lefty Alex Wood (6-5, 3.87 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers this evening. He’ll face another lefty, Max Fried (1-3, 3.92 ERA). Wood dodged serious trouble his last time out, giving up just two runs even though he allowed five of the first six Brewers he faced to get on base. He got the win in that game, and he’s 5-1 since the first of June. Fried is freshly off the 10-day DL where he’d been placed in early July with a blister on his middle finger.

Peter Gammons has a column at The Athletic extolling people who aren’t in the Hall of Fame and should be:

I started thinking of one more large room in the museum. It would be called “For the Love of the Game,” and set up so people with unique contributions to baseball would seem to be in this room together, talking about how they had made the real life of the game better.

What follows is a list of 20 people in his first class of inductees. I’m pretty sure WBBsAs won’t like two of them.

Giants at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NBC Bay Area

The visiting Giants send YALHP Matt Moore (3-10, 5.82 ERA) to the mound to face the Dodgers’ LHP Alex Wood (11-1, 2.17 ERA). Despite the difference in the league standings, the Giants lead the season series 6-4.

Both pitchers are hoping to get back on track. Moore has not won in more than a month, while Wood took his first loss of the season in his last start. Moore has given up 17 earned runs in his last 26 1/3 innings, while Wood gave up nine runs (seven earned) to the Braves on July 21, going only 4 2/3 innings.

This date in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1991 In a game of firsts, Expos right-hander Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game, defeating Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium. In doing so he becomes the first pitcher born outside the United States to do so. Ron Hassey becomes the first backstop to ever catch two perfect games as he also was behind the plate on May 15, 1981 when Indian hurler Len Barker faced 27 batters, beating the Blue Jays, 3-0.

In non-Dodgers’ history, this is also the date in 1994 when Kenny Rogers threw the 12th perfect game in modern major league history and became the first American League left-hander to accomplish the feat when he beat the Angels, 4-0. This was the fifth no-hitter in franchise history and the first perfect game. I’m mentioning this next one only because I’m greatly amused by the name of the ballpark: in 2005 at Whataburger Field, a trio of Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers-AA) pitchers hurled nine perfect innings to beat the hometown Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros-AA), 3-0. A.J. Murray (6), Steve Karsay (2), and Scott Feldman (1) combined to throw only the third nine-inning perfect game, the first by a combination of hurlers, in the 117 year history of the Texas League.
