The Dodgers’ RHP Tony Gonsolin (1-0, 0.69 ERA) brings his gaudy ERA to Chase Field to face the Diamondbacks’ RHP Zach Davies (1-1, 5.02 ERA). Gonsolin took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Braves in his last start when Manny Piña broke it up with a leadoff single. Davies gave up two runs on two hits in five innings in his last start against the Nationals and got the win.

The visiting Reds send RHP Tyler Mahle (1-1, 1.74) to the Dodger Stadium mound to face the Dodgers’ LHP Julio Urías (3-0, 2.81 ERA). Mahle has given up just nine hits and nine walks in the 20 2/3 innings he’s pitched thus far this young season. Three of Urías’s four outings this season have been excellent; overall he’s given up nine runs on 20 hits with 26 Ks and only four walks in 25 2/3 innings.

The NL West champion Dodgers send RHP Ross Stripling (4-4, 3.42 ERA) to the mound to face the Orioles’ rookie LHP John Means (10-10, 3.50 ERA). “Chicken Strip” has made 13 starts and 15 relief appearances this season; he’s got a 3.38 ERA as a starter and a 3.57 ERA as a reliever. In his last start on September 1 he went three scoreless innings; he probably won’t go much longer than that in Wednesday’s game. Means is approaching a career high in innings at 131; the most he’s ever thrown in a season was 157 last year. In his last four starts he’s put up a 2.45 ERA.

So how did the Dodgers get here this go-around?

The visiting Buccos send RHP Chris Archer (1-1, 2.74 ERA) to the Dodger Stadium mound to face the Dodgers’ LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1, 3.10 ERA). Archer says the seven days rest he had before his last start was too much and his “stuff” wasn’t sharp, which cost him the game. Ryu made two mistakes in his last start and they both resulted in Christian Yelich home runs. The Dodgers were shut out in that game and Ryu was a hard-luck loser.

Remember the Dodgers’ four 30-HR guys in 1977? Remember that Dusty Baker had to homer on the last day of the season to reach that mark? Here’s a tidbit about that which I’d never heard before.

Entering the final weekend, Dusty Baker needed one more to join Reggie Smith, Ron Cey and Steve Garvey as the first foursome from one team to clout 30 in the same season. Houston was the opponent at Dodger Stadium. On Friday night before the first game, Reggie used the clubhouse phone, called the Astros dressing room, and asked to speak with James Rodney Richard. The 6-feet-8 Richard dominated the Dodgers more than any pitcher in the National League, beating them 13 straight times over the final 4½ years of his career. When J.R. got on the phone, Smith told him a lie, “Dusty is over here saying he’s going to hit his 30th off you Sunday.” When Reggie hung up, he went to Baker and told him what he had done, and a terrified Dusty replied, “Reggie, you are going to get me killed.”

Dodgers at Reds, 3:40 PM PDT, TV: SPNLA, FS-O. It’s possibly the Free Game of the Day from MLB.

LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-2, 2.16 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers and RHP Luis Castillo (8-12, 4.79 ERA) does so for the Reds. Ryu’s last start was strange. He got the loss while giving up 10 hits but only one earned run in six innings, and the Mets didn’t get their first hit till the fourth inning. Castillo beat St. Louis in his next-to-last start, striking out 11 while doing so, but then in his next start he gave up three home runs in five innings and got the loss.

Dodgers at Giants, 7:15 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, NBCS BA

RHP Kenta Maeda (12-6, 4.02 ERA) takes the mound against RHP Chris Stratton (2-3, 4.10 ERA) in San Francisco.

Maeda allowed one unearned run over five innings on Wednesday against the D-backs. He’s 3-1 with a 4.58 ERA in four career starts against the Giants. Stratton has both started and relieved this season; he’s been much better as a starter. He’s got an 8.59 ERA in relief. As a starter he’s made five starts and has gone 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA since the All Star break.

A sad note: former Dodger (and nine other teams’) scout Mel Didier died Sunday night at home in Phoenix. He was 90 years old. His most memorable find was probably his analysis which showed that the Athletics’ Dennis Eckersley liked to throw backdoor sliders when the count was full and first base was open. He told the Dodgers’ hitters that before Game One of the 1988 World Series. What was the count to Kirk Gibson when he hit that game-winning home run? 3-2. What was the pitch? A backdoor slider.

Historical note of more than passing interest to Cody Bellinger fans: today in 1956 Frank Robinson ties Wally Berger’s 1930 National League record for home runs by a rookie for home runs with his 38th in the Reds’ 11-5 victory over the Giants at Polo Grounds. A’s first baseman Mark McGwire established the major league mark for freshman homers with 49 round-trippers in 1989. Bellinger has 36 with 18 games to go in the season.
