Game 46, 2014

Dodgers at Mets, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

The Dodgers send out Josh Beckett, who brings a 1-1 won-loss record with a 2.38 ERA to Citi Field this afternoon. He’ll face Rafael Montero, who lost his first big league start his last time out and is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. Montero is regarded as the second-best pitcher in the Mets organization.

Anybody hoping to get infield help from Stephen Drew, Fuhgeddaboutit. He just signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox.

Game 41, 2014

Marlins at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Josh Beckett deserves better from his teammates. He’s made six starts this season and is 0-1 with a 2.80 ERA. It’s worse than that, really. He hasn’t gotten a win in his last fourteen starts. He’ll be opposed by Jacob Turner, who’s made three previous starts this season and has nothing to show for it. He’s 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings.

Streaks: The Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig hit in his twelfth straight game yesterday. The Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton hit in his fourteenth straight, while their youngster Christian Yelich hit his second home run in two games.

Lineup when available.

Game 30, 2014

Dodgers at Marlins, 4:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Josh Beckett is looking for his first decision of the season against the team which drafted him in 1999. He’s 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA this year over 22 innings. He’ll face Tom Koehler, a right-hander who’s in his first full season in the majors. He’s 2-2 with a 2.97 ERA over 30.1 innings.

Each team swept its last series. The Marlins are 14-14 after beating the Braves three straight and the Dodgers are 17-12 after defeating the Twins three times in less than 36 hours.

No one can doubt that Yasiel Puig likes being on a team. Here are three episodes from the dugout yesterday.

Lineup when available.

Update: This is horrible news:

Game 24, 2014

Rockies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

The Rockies send out right-handed Jordan Lyles (3-0, 3.04 ERA) to start against the Dodgers’ right-hander Josh Beckett (0-0, 2.57). Lyles has only started once at Dodger Stadium, in 2011. He was shelled, giving up seven runs on seven hits including three home runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers are 5-7 at home overall and 3-4 on this home stand. The Phillies came in under .500 at 8 – 10 and left even at 11 -11. The Rockies come in at 12 – 11 and one game behind the Dodgers. The Dodgers need to win two of three just to break even on this home stand.

Lineup when available.

Notice that Crawford is hitting sixth. Here’s Mattingly’s reasoning.

Game 19, 2014

Diamondbacks at Dodgers, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA.

The Dodgers send Josh Beckett out to face the D-Backs’ Josh Collmenter. I wonder if this is a first: two guys named Josh facing one another.

Collmenter’s record is 0-1, with a 3.75 ERA. Beckett is 0-0, with a 4.00 ERA. Adrian Gonzalez has a 14-game hitting streak.

Game 14, 2014

Dodgers at Giants, 7:15 PST, TV: SPNLA.

Josh Beckett takes the mound for the Dodgers. His previous start, his first since May of last year, was against the Tigers on April 9th. He went four innings, threw 85 pitches, gave up five hits and five runs (four earned), and struck out five while walking only one. Facing him will be Tim Lincecum, who’s 0 – 1 with a 9.90 ERA. In his two starts so far, Lincecum has given up 11 earned runs on 15 hits and a walk in 10 innings. However, he’s 9 – 6 in his career against the Dodgers with an ERA of 2.94.

Lineup when it appears.

Apr 09

Game Ten, 2014

Tigers at Dodgers. Anibal Sanchez makes his second start of the season; he gave up two runs over four innings in the first one and then the rains came and he was done. The Dodgers haven’t formally announced it to MLB.com, but their starter is supposed to be Josh Beckett, who’ll make his first start of the season.

No lineups yet, either.

The game time is known, though! It’s 7:10 PST, 4:10 HST, 10:10 EST, and who knows when for John_from_Aus. Televised on SPNLA.

In news of disgruntled players and front office personnel, the Giants have ended contract talks with Pablo Sandoval. It’s reported he wants a five-year deal for more than the $8.25M he’s getting paid this season. So, is the Kung Fu Panda worth $45 or $50 million bucks? He’s currently hitting .161 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. He’s 27 and will hit free agency after the 2014 season. Uribear is under contract through 2015.

Game Six, 2014

Today is the home opener for the Dodgers, and it’s against their fellow migrants from New York, the San Francisco Giants, also known as “the hated enemy.”

First, we get the news that Matt Kemp will start in center field. Second, we learn that that was not the original plan, but that Mattingly changed the lineup to try to get the message across to Yasiel Puig that being late costs playing time.

It’s Ryu v. Vogelsong at 1:10PM PST on SPNLA or in Northern California on CSN-BA.

Due to a quirk in the schedule, this will be Ryu’s third start in five games, all on normal or better rest.

Paul Maholm and Zack Greinke will start Saturday and Sunday for the Dodgers, while rehabbing right-hander Josh Beckett will pitch in a Minor League game Friday.

Maholm was signed to be insurance if fifth starter Beckett wasn’t fully healed from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Beckett’s recovery, however, was complicated by a bruised right hand suffered in the clubhouse in Spring Training. This will be Maholm’s first start of the season.

Beckett will pitch for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga. Greinke, who pitched five innings for a win Tuesday, will be pitching on normal rest.

Lineup:

Update: According to SI, “Puig thought he was supposed to be at the park at 10 AM PT, when he was actually supposed to be there in time for a stretch at 9:40 AM.” Okay, that’s a lot less annoying than I thought it might be. I was expecting that he’d underestimated traffic and hadn’t left his home on time, which in my world is unacceptable (I’m ten minutes early for everything).

Spurned!

Now that Tanaka-san decided to try his luck with the Yankees, what do the Dodgers do? Do they really need another starter?

Yes, yes: “You can never have too much pitching.” And it’s true that after Kershaw, Greinke and Ryu the Dodgers have questions. Will Haren return to his earlier form, or is he now a .500 pitcher? Will Beckett and Billingsley recover fully from their respective injuries? Who knows?

Ervin Santana, Ubaldo Jimenez, Matt Garza and Bronson Arroyo, among others, remain unsigned. Santana and Jimenez received qualifying offers, which means that landing them would cost the Dodgers a draft pick. That seems unlikely, given the team’s imperative to rebuild the farm system gutted by Frank McCourt. Neither Garza nor Arroyo received qualifying offers, which could put them in play.

I dunno. I think they need to get Hanley Ramirez’s contract extended before offering more money to any of those guys.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN both Tweet that the Dodgers have signed ex-Angel Chone Figgins to a minor league contract and invited him to camp as a non-roster guy. If he’s got anything at all left (he sat out last year and is 36 years old) he could be one of the utility guys the Dodgers desperately need.
