Dodgers at Marlins, 4:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-M, SPNLA

LHP Clayon Kershaw (11-2, 2.77 ERA) goes for the Dodgers while LHP Elieser Hernandez (2-4, 4.94 ERA) pitches for the home team. Kershaw has gone at least six innings in each of his 20 starts this season, and his last one was a seven-inning nine-strikeout gem against the Cardinals. Hernandez’s last start might have been his career best (he’s only made 14 overall), when he threw six innings of shutout ball against the Braves.

Baseball’s 20-Something Sluggers Are Saving The Sport, say the stat guys at 538. Take note: measured by WAR, the Dodgers have two of the best 23-year-olds in all of baseball history in Bellinger and Verdugo.

  • 1919 In a total of two hours and seventeen minutes, the Dodgers and Cubs split a doubleheader. In the opener, the Cubs blank Brooklyn 2-0, in one hour and ten minutes, and in the nightcap, it takes the Dodgers one hour and seven minutes to shut out Chicago, 1-0.
  • 1932 Brooklyn’s 10-inning, 2-1 victory over the Giants at the Polo Grounds makes reliever John Quinn, at the age of 49, the oldest player to win a major league game. Johnny Frederick, who will have a total of only six home runs during the entire season, hits a ninth inning game-tying homer off Carl Hubbell, his fourth round-tripper as a pinch hitter, establishing a new major-league record.

Also, in 2015 the Padres’ Matt Kemp hits a ninth-inning triple to complete the cycle, making him the first player in the 35-year history of the franchise to accomplish the feat. The San Diego outfielder’s home run in the first, single in the third, and double in the seventh contribute to the team’s 9-5 victory over Colorado at Coors Field.

Dodgers at Reds, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-O, SPNLA

RHP Walker Buehler (4-0, 4.15 ERA) is on the bump for the Dodgers and RHP Tyler Mahle (0-5, 3.97 ERA) pitches for the Reds. Buehler has improved in virtually every start after a shortened spring training. His last time out he went seven scoreless innings and gave up just four hits to the Nats, only to see the bullpen give up five runs in the 8th and lose the game. Mahle has pitched well at times but appears to be a victim of the dreaded “one bad inning” disease.

  • 1929 In the doubleheader played at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl, the teams combine to score a record fifty runs when the Dodgers outlast the Phillies, 20-16, before dropping the nightcap to the home team 8-6. In the opener, Brooklyn’s Johnny Frederick crosses the plate five times, giving him the major league mark of scoring eight runs in two consecutive games.
  • 1931 Dodgers’ outfielder Babe Herman hits for the cycle for the first of two times this season. In 1933, as a member of the Cubs, he will again hit for the cycle, making him and Bob Meusel the only major leaguers to have accomplished the feat three times since 1900.
  • 1942 Night games in New York are banned for the duration of WW II, leaving fans in the dark about the status of the All-Star Game scheduled to be played at the Polo Grounds on the evening of Monday, July 6. The prohibition of nighttime tilts, announced by NYC Police Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine, will change the starting times for 28 contests involving the Dodgers and Giants. (The first night game at Yankee Stadium will be played in 1946.)
  • 1998 With a 6-3 victory over the Orioles, the Devil Rays become only the second expansion team in major league history to sweep an away four-game series. The 1993 Colorado Rockies, who did it against the Dodgers, is the other team to accomplish this feat.

Another historical note: In 2004 At the age of 40, southpaw Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a perfect game when the Diamondbacks beat the Braves, 2-0. The ‘Big Unit’ joins Cy Young, Jim Bunning, Hideo Nomo, and Nolan Ryan as the only hurlers to throw no-hitters in both leagues and creates the longest time span between no-no’s, having first accomplished the feat against the Tigers in June of 1990.

The Dodgers send RHP Ross Stripling (8-3, 2.61 ERA) to the mound for his second appearance after coming off the DL where he’d been for a sore back. He’s expected to pitch only 3 innings or 45 pitches. He’ll face RHP Anthony DeSclafani (7-4, 4.56 ERA), who had a good August but has been pulled by the fourth inning in each of his last two starts. The Reds won his last outing 12-6 despite his giving up eight hits and four runs in four innings.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1930 The last major league bounced home run is hit by Dodger catcher Al Lopez at Ebbets Field as the NL joins the American League, which had enacted the rule change in 1929. The player who hits the ball over the wall on a bounce will now be awarded a ground-rule double.
  • 1932 In the bottom of the ninth, Johnny Frederick hits his major league record-setting sixth pinch-homer of the season, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Brooklyn outfielder’s major league mark will not be broken for 68 years until another Dodger, Dave Hansen, strokes seven round-trippers coming off the bench in 2000.
  • 1953 The Dodgers clinch a pennant at the earliest date ever in baseball history with a 5-2 victory over the Braves at County Stadium. Carl Erskine gets the win when Brooklyn, who clinches consecutive titles for the first time in franchise history, goes up 13 games up on Milwaukee with 12 left to play.
  • 1962 One game behind the front running Dodgers, the Giants lose Willie Mays, their All-Star center fielder, when he is hospitalized for nervous exhaustion. The ‘City by the Bay’ will drop six games in a row, but will recover along with ‘Say Hey Kid’ in time to beat Los Angeles in a playoff to win the National league pennant.
  • 1963

    “I look up into the stands, and it looks like Ebbets Field. The Mets are wonderful, but you can’t take the Dodger out of Brooklyn” – DUKE SNIDER, – addressing the Mets fans on his special night at the Polo Grounds.

    In a pregame ceremony with his former Dodgers teammates, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, and Ralph Branca in attendance, Duke Snider is honored by the Mets with a special ‘night’ at the Polo Grounds, which coincidentally marks the last time the Giants, now located in San Francisco, will ever play in their once long-time home in Harlem. The ‘Silver Fox’, obtained by the last-place expansion team in April, has recently requested to be traded to a contender.

  • 1995 During a WGN pre-game radio broadcast at Wrigley Field, Cubs announcer Harry Caray remarks to the team’s skipper Jim Riggleman, “Well, my eyes are slanty enough, how ’bout yours?”, referring to Hideo Nomo, the Japanese rookie hurler scheduled to start for the Dodgers. The veteran announcer, known for not backing off for his on-the-air off-handed comments, does issue an apology, calling the incident “unfortunate.”
  • 2000 On the same date the mark was established 68 years ago, Dave Hansen breaks Johnny Frederick’s 1932 record for pinch-hit home runs in a single season with his seventh round-tripper coming off the bench. The Dodger pinch-hitter’s historic homer, a seventh-inning three-run blast off Diamondback right-hander Curt Schilling, isn’t enough to prevent the team’s 5-4 loss to Arizona at Bank One Ballpark.

It’ll be the Giants’ LHP Andrew Suárez (4-8, 4.64 ERA) versus the Dodgers’ LHP Alex Wood (7-6, 3.58 ERA). Suárez is a rookie who’ll be making his first career start against the Dodgers. Wood is coming off the 10-day DL where he was placed August 3 with left adductor tendinis.

Dodgers at Nationals, 11:05 AM PDT, TV: SPNLA, MASN, MLBN (out-of-market only)

Young RHP Ross Stripling (0-1, 2.20 ERA) opens the series with the Nationals, who send out the redoubtable RHP Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.69 ERA) to face him. Scherzer has struck out 91 this season and has a strikeout per nine inning ratio of 13.96. That’s impressive, but Stripling has a 9.73 ratio himself, albeit in 30 fewer innings.

It’s LHP Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 2.15 ERA) for the Dodgers and RHP Johnny Cueto (7-7, 4.43 ERA) for the Giants.

Both former All-Stars made their returns Sept. 1. Cueto has had more success than Kershaw since returning, posting a 2.61 ERA in 10 1/3 innings. Kershaw, who was bumped up a day from his scheduled Wednesday start, has a 3.72 ERA in 9 2/3 innings.

Marlins at Dodgers, 7:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FS-F

Miami has lost three in a row and 8 of its last ten (the Dodgers won their last game and 6 of their last ten). The Marlins have given up 35 more runs than they’ve scored (the Dodgers have scored 55 more than they’ve allowed). On the other hand, the Marlins swept a four-game series from the Dodgers last year in Los Angeles. This series is also four games. Cue ominous music.

RHP Edinson Volquez (0-5, 4.41 ERA) tries to dig himself and his team out of their respective holes. The Dodgers counter with LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-5, 4.99 ERA). Volquez just came off the disabled list and went six innings against the Braves, giving up only four hits and two runs. Ryu’s last start was awful; he gave up 10 runs (only five earned), eight hits and six walks to the Rockies in Denver.

A-Gon has been activated from the 10-day DL and Scott Van Slyke has been optioned back to OKC.
