On this date in baseball history Bill Wambsganss pulled off an unassisted triple play in the World Series (against Brooklyn, of course) in 1920. Lew Burdette is named MVP of the 1957 World Series for winning three complete games in the Braves’ defeat of the Yankees. On this date in baseball history there were batting championship shenanigans in 1910, Woodrow Wilson became the first President to watch a World Series game in 1915, in 1919 the White Sox lost the last game and the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds amidst unsavory rumors of a fix, the Orioles beat the Dodgers 1-0 in Game Four and swept the 1966 World Series, and much more.
The early game: Braves at Brewers, 2:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS
LHP Max Fried (14-7, 3.04 ERA) takes the hill for the Braves. He’ll face the Brewers’ RHP Brandon Woodruff (9-10, 2.56 ERA). The Brewers are up 1-0 in the series.
The second game: Dodgers at Giants, 6:07 PM PDT, TV: TBS
The Dodgers hand the ball to their 20-game winner and dark-horse Cy Young candidate LHP Julio Urías (20-3, 2.96 ERA). The Giants counter with RHP Kevin Gausman (14-6, 2.81 ERA). The Giants are up 1-0 in the series.

Game Two: Dodgers at Giants, 6:37 PM PDT, TV: TBS
The Dodgers send out another of their Cy Young candidates, RHP Walker Buehler (16-4, 2.47 ERA) to face the Giants’ RHP Logan Webb (11-3, 3.03 ERA).
Today in baseball history in 1939 Joe DiMaggio scored from first as Reds catcher Ernie Lombardi “swooned” at home plate, Don Larsen pitched the only World Series perfect game in 1956, Walter O’Malley announced the Dodgers would move to Los Angeles in 1957, and the Dodgers defeated the White Sox 9-3 in Game Six of the 1959 World Series to win the whole shebang, among many other things.

The first game today is White Sox at Astros, 1:07 PM PDT, TV: FS1
Each starting pitcher is named Lance; how about that, as Curt Gowdy would say. It’ll be RHP Lance Lynn (11-6, 2.69 ERA) for the Sox and RHP Lance McCullers (13-5, 3.16 ERA) for the Astros in Minute Maid Park.
I don’t know much at all about the White Sox; I know more than I’d like about the Astros.
The second game is Red Sox at Rays, 5:07 PM PDT, TV: FS1
LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (13-8, 4.74 ERA) takes the mound for the Red Sox at Tropicana Field while LHP Shane McClanahan (10-6, 3.43 ERA) does the same for the Rays.
The Sox are somewhat familiar, as are the Rays after last year’s World Series.
On this date in baseball history in 1950 rookie Whitey Ford got his first World Series win (he’d end up with a 10-8 W-L record in the postseason), Curt Flood was traded to the Phillies, precipitating his challenge to the reserve clause, the Dodgers came from behind to win Game Three of the 1977 NLCS against the Phillies, the Dodgers beat the Phillies in Game Four of the 1978 NLCS to win the pennant, and Benny Agbayani hits a homer in the 13th inning of Game Three of the 2000 NLDS to end the longest game in divisional playoff history.

The Washington Post asks, “why is the World Series favorite in a play-in game?” and proceeds to tell its readers why the Dodgers are favored to win the whole schmeer.
The other NL contenders simply cannot match the depth on the mound or at the plate that Los Angeles brings to the table. While the Dodgers’ road appears harder than those of other teams, the hardest road of all is for any team with the Dodgers standing in front of them.
Cardinals at Dodgers , 5:10 PM PDT, TV: TBS
Grizzled veterans face one another as the Cards send 40-year-old RHP Adam Wainwright (17-7, 3.05 ERA) to the Dodger Stadium mound to face the Dodgers’ 37-year-old RHP Max Scherzer (15-4, 2.46 ERA).
Much has happened on this day in baseball history: Sandy Koufax took Yom Kippur off in 1965, Mudcat Grant became the first black World Series game-winner for an American League team when the Twins took Game 1 from the Dodgers at Metropolitan Stadium in 1965, Willie Davis made three errors in the fifth inning of Game Two of the 1966 World Series, Jim Palmer beat Koufax in the same game, Phil Niekro won his 300th game in 1985, and Lenny Harris surpassed Manny Mota’s career pinch-hit record in 2001.

RHP Gerrit Cole (16-8, 3.23 ERA) goes for the Yankees and RHP Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Red Sox.
October 5 has been an eventful day in baseball history. Among other things, Mickey Owens let Tommy Heinrich’s ball get past him in 1941, Al Gionfriddo caught Joe DiMaggio’s fly ball in 1947, Don Newcombe made the first World Series start by a black pitcher memorable but lost 1-0 on a walk-off HR by Tommy Heinrich (him again!) in 1949, Mickey Mantle tore up his right knee in 1951 when DiMaggio called him off a fly ball, and Glenn Burke high-fived Dusty Baker in 1977, the first time that gesture was seen in MLB.
