Game 44, 2023

Twins at Dodgers, 12:10 PM PDT, TV: BS North, SPNLA

RHP Sonny Gray (4-0, 1.39 ERA) climbs the hill for the Twins and RHP Dustin May (4-1, 2.68 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1947 At Forbes Field, Hank Greenberg asks Jackie Robinson if the Dodger infielder was hurt in a collision with him at first base earlier in the game and then tells the embattled Brooklyn rookie, “Stick in there. You’re doing fine. Keep your chin up.” Jackie will remark to the writers a few days later that his “diamond hero” is Hank Greenberg, knowing that the Pirates’ first baseman, who due to the bigotry endured as a Jew, can appreciate his difficulty of facing racial injustice every day as the first black player in the major leagues this century.
  • 1978 Pinch-hitting for Davey Lopes in the Los Angeles 10-1 rout of the Pirates, Lee Lacy goes deep in the bottom of the eighth inning off Will McEnaney at Dodger Stadium. The utility player becomes the first player in major league history to homer in three consecutive at-bats as a pinch hitter.
  • 1992 Using only 21 dates, the Blue Jays reach the one-million mark in attendance sooner than any team in major league history. The 1991 Blue Jays and the 1981 Dodgers shared the previous record.

Lineups when available.

  1. Dustin May has a Flexor Pronator Strain, per Roberts. Going on the IL. Could be out for quite a while.
    Next man up.

Here’s some general info regarding the Flexor Pronator Strain: rarely requires surgery unless the injury is so severe that the tendon is torn off the bone. Most injuries are just strains, or stretches, of the tendon. As such, often rest from pitching and ice can often be sufficient to cause healing. Physical therapy can often speed that recovery and help the athlete return to the mound. Despite this injury usually not requiring surgery, it can still take the athlete six weeks or more to heal to the point that he can pitch pain free.

  2. Probably the hardest Gray has had to work this season, and now he’s out of the game.

  3. So JD is 4/10 with 2 walks and a HR off of Sonny Gray and Jason Heyward is the DH today?
    I just don’t understand Doc’s reasoning.
Perhaps his back is acting up.

    • Likely other considerations over SSS. Perhaps medical staff told Doc to give him an occasional day off, even though he is a DH. Doc had him in there for every game this season until he got the back issue. May rest him once a week or once every two weeks from now on. And this looked like as good as any other day ( day after night).

    • Reminded of a joke that WBBsAs at least will get. Spanish fellow goes into a shop to get socks but has a hard time indicating such as he doesn’t speak English. Finally the shopkeeper pulls out a pair and the fellow says “s”, “o”, “c”, “k”, “s”. Shopkeeper is amazed that the fellow knows how to spell what he wants.

  4. I’ve been driving and semi-listening between interruptions. Go Blue! Go Outman!

  5. Late lunch here in CDMX, some will be glancing at phone under the table from here on out.

  6. Another Gray, Josiah with the Nats has an ERA+ 151 in 9 starts this year.

  7. Gray struggling. Need to pounce on him while we have an opportunity.

  8. Trayce getting the start against the righty. Concern coming into the season was his inability to hit lefties. Now it is his inability to hit at all. Good luck to him!
