Game 13, 2023

Dodgers at Giants, 6:45 PM PDT, TV: NBCS BA, SPNLA

LHP Clayton Kershaw (1-1, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Dodgers and RHP Alex Cobb (0-1, 2.53 ERA) gets it for the Giants.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1906 At Brooklyn’s Washington Park, Boston Beaneater rookie Johnny Bates becomes the first modern player to homer in his first major league at-bat. The 23 year-old outfielder connects off Harry McIntire in the top of the second inning in the team’s 2-0 Opening Day victory over the Superbas.
  • 1962 Pete Richert, making his major league debut, comes out of the bullpen and strikes out the first six batter he faces, a major league record. The rookie southpaw fans four in the third inning in LA’s 11-7 comeback victory over the Reds at Dodger Stadium.
  • 1976 The game against the Padres is rained out at Dodger Stadium for only the second time in the 14-year history of the ballpark. The washout ends a streak started in April 1967, covering a span of 724 straight contests, with subsequent postponements coming much sooner when inclement weather cancels two consecutive home dates in September.

Lineups when available.

  1. Day off today for the Dodgers and the blogger. Well, except for the teeth cleaning and the acceptance of keys if escrow closes as hoped.

  2. Kill the Ump is rarely a serious cry, and certainly not one players take action on. But yesterday one of them was hit in the head by a relay throw. It was serious enough that he’s still hospitalized, where he was taken for overnight observation.

  3. Kershaw: 401 career starts in the regular season, 199 wins. That’s incredible.

Koufax had 314 starts and 165 wins (in fewer years, as we all know).

  4. Joey K Bart has gone consecutive ABs without a strikeout. That may be a personal best.

  5. The strike zone is so random, and appears to mostly favor the gnats. Or is that my bias showing through?

  6. Well, that was enjoyable. Kersh with win #199 Cody and the Cubbies coming to town.
    Excelsior True Blue Believers.

  7. Tim says Max should be invited to the owner’s meetings since he owns this club.

  8. Max has reached the Mendoza line, but his OPS is now .847 – higher than his career average.

  9. Freddie always looks weird when he receives the throw. (I just realized it’s because he is right handed).

  10. Gameday is an utter mess tonight. It says “Darren Ruf flies out” and the inning is over.

  11. Glad that wasn’t Machado running to first with Kershaw’s foot there for the kicking.

  12. Radio weirdness: the Dodgers’ Spanish language feed is replaying last night’s game, and the English broadcast is a full batter behind Gameday.

  13. Before an overflow crowd of 17,136 in Tampa, the Devil Rays have won their 12th straight to open the season.
