Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1903 A year before the first subway line is completed, the Brooklyn Superbas, later to be known as the Dodgers, play their cross-town rivals in a two-stadium, same-day doubleheader. The first game played in Washington Park begins at 10:30 am with 9,300 fans watching the visiting Giants win the opener, 6-4, and later that afternoon in front of 23,623 patrons at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, Brooklyn wins the second game, 3-0.
  • 1916 The Giants defeat the Dodgers 4-1 to start their major league record 26-game winning streak. The ‘Jints’ start the span two games under .500 and make up nine games in the standings, but remain in fourth place during the entire streak.
  • 1962 With four steals in a 10-1 loss to the Pirates, Dodger Maury Wills breaks the modern National League record for stolen bases in a season with his 82nd swipe. Bob Bescher established the mark in 1911, playing left field for Cincinnati.
  • 1964 At Connie Mack Stadium, a Labor Day crowd of 26,390 fans watches the first-place Phillies split a doubleheader with the Dodgers. The attendance for the twin bill brings the season’s total to 1,224,172 patrons, breaking the all-time franchise home attendance record established by the Whiz Kids in 1950.
  • 2001 Shawn Green breaks a franchise record for homers in a season with his 44th home run, the first of two dingers the Dodger right fielder will hit off Dustin Hermanson in the team’s 7-1 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The previous mark had been shared by Duke Snider (1956) and Gary Sheffield (2000).

    • Yes, way too many strikeouts, particularly for Taylor, who has fanned more than 45 percent of his ABs since his return in early August.

        • Do the batting coaches talk to him? Or does he not listen if they do? This has been a problem all . . . season . . . long for Taylor.

          • He has been a SO machine his whole career. But this year he is taking it to new heights. It is frustrating.

  1. Hot, dry weather sure helps the ball carry. We have hit seven homers in this series; the Giants have hit nine.

  2. Aaron Judge has hit his 55th home run of the season today. The Yankees and the Twins are knotted at 3-3 in the 12th.

  3. Honest, I meant to post this before Bruihl came in to pitch. I would not have brought him in. Roberts had better options for the 7th inning.

    • Almost meaningless game for the Dodgers so Dave is auditioning players for the post season roster. I don’t think Bruihl makes the cut.

      • Regarding the meaningless nature of the game, you are probably right, but still I hate the prospect of losing to the Giants. And I would have liked for Kershaw to win his eighth game. I agree what you wrote regarding Bruihl and the postseason roster.

          • What has bothered me about Roberts since he became the skipper are his failures in the handling of pitchers that have been so costly in the postseason. During the course of a 162-game schedule, particularly when the Dodgers are far in front in the standings, his foibles with pitchers are absorbed, but not in the postseason.

  4. It’s feels like months since I have been on here but I think it’s only a few weeks. I have been away on vacation / away for work / sick during those weeks. Doing better now that the fevers, dizziness are gone…

        • Fortunately it wasn’t COVID. I had been working outdoors at some camps and it was some heat exhaustion stuff that took awhile to recover from.

  5. Just was about to type that this is a “we need RBI” game – and then JT goes yard!!!

  6. I leave for five minutes and return to find the Giants ahead, 2-0! And we have left eight runners on in four innings.
