Game 120, 2022

Marlins at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: BSF, SPNLA

RHP Ryan Pepiot (1-0, 4.26 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers today, his 25th birthday, and RHP Sandy Alcantara (11-5, 1.92 ERA) does so for the Marlins. Pepiot has made two starts in August but he’s been pulled before he could finish the fifth inning in either. Alcantara leads the league in ERA (the Dodgers’ Gonsolin, Urias and Anderson are numbers 2, 3 and 6 respectively). He’s 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA in August.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1975 The Reuschel brothers of the Cubs join forces to blank the Dodgers, 6-0. Rick goes 6 1/3 innings and Paul finishes the game for the first shutout thrown by siblings.
  • 1990 The Phillies overcome an eight-run deficit, scoring nine runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Dodgers, 12-11. John Kruk’s pinch-hit three-run homer ties the game, and two batters later, Carmelo Martinez’s double plates Rod Booker with the eventual winning run in the Chavez Ravine contest. (Editor’s note: I got home from work in time to see that inning. I was nearly yelling by the time the Dodgers got the third out.)

  • 2005 Florida suspends their bat boy for six games after the 11 year-old accepts former Marlin and current Dodger hurler Brad Penny’s $500 dare to drink a gallon of milk in less than an hour without throwing up. The Milk Processor Education Program will promise to pay off the dare and to cover the lost wages resulting from the suspension if the sixth grader, who is able to drink the quantity in the allotted time but cannot keep it down, agrees to drink three glasses every 24 hours.

Lineups when available.

  1. Late to the party! Dodgers are still rocking. I’m in Toronto (well Brampton actually) for the Canadian National Ultimate (frisbee) tournament. My son is playing on team Manitoba and they play Mon-Wed or Thurs.

    • In all facets, Kimbrel’s season has been weird. He might not be the indestructible reliever he once was, but he also shouldn’t be this mediocre.

      Huh.

        • Without reading the article, it seems to me his issue is lack of command. No idea where the ball is going, often missing the zone by a lot (missing by a little is good).

  2. Disqus is doing strange things to comments. It’s even telling me I have to premoderate everything. I have a complaint in at their Twitter account.

      • Disqus Support suggested just whitelisting all my commenters. I said I can do that, but it’s easy because I only have about ten. If I had fifty or a hundred it would be impossible to whitelist them all. I got crickets as a response.

  3. Condo/apartment-living laundry is a pain in the okole. I’m way too used to having my own washer/dryer in my own house to enjoy carting a basket of whites and another of darks down to the laundry room in this place (although I’m glad it’s got one!).

  4. Hey everyone. Grandchildren invasion but I have one eye on the game. Go Blue! I thought this one would be tougher!

  5. Alcantara is not having his best game of the season, or maybe it’s just that the Dodgers’ offense is so much better than most he’s faced.

      • May 1 he gave up 5 runs on six hits in 5 2/3. He’s not invincible.

Reminds me of Yogi Berra after seeing Koufax in 1963: “I see how he won X, but I don’t understand how he lost five.”

    • There is a thirty minute span where no comments appear. Neither mine nor others.

    • Getting worse. They disappear almost as soon as I post. Frustrating. Gunna call it a day. (Bet you never even see this)

    • ERA of 14+ in 3 starts against Dodgers coming into today, so guessing LA has a lot to do with it.

  6. At 15-1, Gonsolin’s winning percentage of .938 is currently the single-season highest in club history. Phil Regan was 14-1 one year.

  7. It would be good for Gonsolins Cy Young chances if we can put a beat down on Alcantara.

    • With all due respect for Gonsolin, probably a long shot. He has a chance at winning 20, though.

      • I keep hearing that, and I keep muttering “why?” He’s won a bunch of games, he’s been up at the top of the ERA leaderboard for months, so why wouldn’t he be considered for a Cy Young Award? I think there’s a bit of name recognition bias in the people ignoring his performance.

      • Fairly closely matched in several important areas, but Goose’s numbers are in 50 less innings at this point. Can’t imagine him closing that gap.

  8. I’d use a sliding glove that was at least six inches too long so that I could touch the bag sooner.

  9. Dodgers-Marlins game is supposed to be on the MLB TV network this afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m. PDT, which would be odd because the game begins at 1:10 p.m. However, the first game on that network — Blue Jays-Yankees — is only in the 5th inning at 12:40 p.m. PDT.
