Dodgers at Brewers, 2:10 PM PDT, TV: BSW, FS1, SPNLA
RHP Tony Gonsolin (14-1, 2.24 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and LHP Eric Lauer (8-4, 3.64 ERA) takes the hill for the Brewers. Gonsolin’s July was a little rough (26 hits and 15 runs in 30 2/3 innings), but he’s bounced back in his first two starts in August. Lauer has already tied his career high in wins this year with a month to go.
The Dodgers reinstated IF Edwin Ríos from the 60-day IL and optioned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1992 Kevin Gross, retiring 22 of the final 23 batters he faces on his wife’s birthday, no-hits the Giants at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. The LA right-hander’s no-no averts the team from being swept in a four-game series at home against the Giants for the first time in 69 years.
- 2013 Clayton Kershaw blanks the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, 5-0, giving the Dodgers their first double-digit winning streak since 2006. The team’s 42 victories in their last fifty games, including a 25-3 mark since the All-Star break, equals the 1941 Yankees and 1942 Cardinals for the best record for that span of games since 1900.

Numbers don’t lie. Recovering from Covid and tired of reading (and napping), and because statistics have always interested me, I decided to look at Kimbrel’s numbers compared to those of our closers starting in 2000. You won’t be surprised:
2022 — Kimbrel, 4.57 ERA, 20 of 24 save opportunities, 1.55 WHIP, .272 batting average allowed, 3 wins, 5 losses
2021 — Jansen, 2.22, 38/43, 1.04, .153, 4-4
2020 — Jansen, 3.33, 11/13 (shortened season), 1.15, .211, 3-1
2019 — Jansen, 3.71, 33/41, 1.06, .213, 5-3
2018 — Jansen, 3.01, 38/42, 0.99, .201, 1-5
2017 — Jansen, 1.32, 41/42, 0.75, .177. 5-0
2016 — Jansen, 1.83, 47/53, 0.67, .150, 3-2
2015 — Jansen, 2.41, 36/38, 0.78, .176, 2-1
2014 — Jansen, 2.76, 44/49, 1.13, .224, 2-3
2013 — Jansen, 1.88, 28/32, 0.86, .177, 4-3
2012 — Jansen, 2.35, 25/32, 0.85, .146, 5-3
2011 — Guerra, 2.31, 21/23, 1.18, .218, 2-2
2010 — Broxton, 4.04, 22/29, 1.48, .270, 5-6
2009 — Broxton, 2.61, 36/42, 0.96, .165, 7-2
2008 — Saito, 2.49, 18/22, 1.19, .226, 4-4
2007 — Saito, 1.40, 39/43, 0.72, 1.51, 2-1
2006 — Saito, 2.07, 24/26, 0.91, .177, 6-2
2005 — Brazoban, 5.33, 21-27, 1.40, .258, 4-10

2001 — Shaw, 3.62, 43/43, 1.08. .227, 3-5
2000 — Shaw, 4.24, 27/27. 1.34, .265/ 3-4
Memories of Mongo and Smiling Sammy.
Kimbrels 1.55 WHIP is alarming.
Yes, the worst since at least 2000. As is his batting average allowed. But Roberts said that he is staying with Kimbrel as the closer. Reminds me of the guy who kept putting screen doors on submarines and couldn’t figure out why they kept sinking. The numbers also show how meaningless the won-lost record is for closers, but not when it came to Brazoban in 2005.
Doc has a big margin to play with. Might as well take advantage of it to see if they can get Kimbrel going.
How many more shots would you give him?
Depends if he starts showing some improvement. Otherwise only until the end of the month so that Doc has September to audition and get the others comfortable in their new roles.
At least till May, Treinen, and Graterol come back.
Cause for serious concern, but Dodgers have a big margin to play with. Based on his history, Kimbrel’s upside is sky-high, but he’s got a long way to go.
Watching the Pads and Fish today, I learned that Miami has a rookie Quebecker, 2B Charles Leblanc, in the lineup. The only other Quebecker active in MLB is Vlad Guerrero Jr. RHP Jesen Therrien is listed as active but is a free agent (he was briefly in the Dodgers organization, in 2018 and 2019, recovering from TJ).

Dodgers need a W tomorrow to get back above .700.
Tough match up tomorrow. Corbin Burnes vs Heaney.
Burnes is 0-1 in his last three starts.
Turturous, simply turturous. But it is a win. Day game tomorrow. I think it is nationally televised.
A Thursday day game nationally televised?
MLBN, not Fox or ESPN. And yes, 11:10 AM PDT game time.
Thanks.
On the Dodgers.com site it says it’s on MLBN, but who knows?
3 groundballs. That’s fine, Kimbrel. You don’t need Ks.
Exactly.
It is usually walks that kill Kimbrel.
Well, and hits.
His walks are just a little above career average, but hits are almost double!
Dodgers win!
TRES. Whew!!
Phew-HOO!!!!
He’s missing by just enough…
Kimbrel not exactly swimming – more like doing the doggie paddle right now.
Kimbrel just can’t finish his inning off.
That was a Kenley.
Getting weak swings on breaking stuff.
Another one, but beats the shift.
DOS
One more out to get.
Pretty much around the plate so far.
There’s one!
UNO
Big lead over Puds in division is Kimbrels savior.
Ok – sink or swim time for Kimbrel.
I think he floats tonight.
Maybe the Dodgers can have a 2 out run scoring hit here like the Brewers just had.
First run allowed by Ferguson in 20 appearances, 19 innings.
He’s been truly impressive.
How about a non-save situation?
That would lead to Moronta.
So – it could be a one run game for Kimbrel in the 9th. Or the Dodgers could score a few more runs.
Insurance run(s) please.
Pleeeeeeeaze!
Whew.
Good futuring!
Walks will kill you.
¡Miércoles!
Ugh, throw just off the line.
Ok Caleb – settle down here.
Now this is stress.
Just missed (ump got that one right).
Outstanding effort by Tony.
Trea is fast, but it hits the ball so hard that it is tough for him to get an infield single.
Who pitches the 8th and 9th for us? Gonsolin, in a brilliant effort, has thrown 95 pitches. And under stress. His season high is 98.
What stress? Did they even get a runner to second? Best to conserve his innings in any event.
Working in a tight low scoring game I guess is more stressful than in a blowout.
Agreed. Scoreless tie into the 6th inning.
Probably more stressful for us than him.
Watch out Sandy Alcantara. Gonsolin is coming for you. Lol
A great, patient at bat by Muncy.
Dodgers showing comparable patience with Kimbrel that they did with Max.
Good analogy.
The flip side is sitting Bellinger for a few days to “re-set” him. Don’t think that’s a bad move at times either.
Problem is, Belli needs a total remake of his swing. Muncy did not.
Agreed about Max and Belli. Just curious – which one is Kimbrel more similar to? Is he a Max or a Belli?
Not sure what to make of Kimbrel. He needs to stop walking hitters. He has not been great for a few years now.
First half of last year he was great.
Muncy mashes. Woot!!
Max!!!
Very fine futuring!
A Barnes Bomb. Woot!!
Arguably the most loathsome Gnat ever is running for office in Southern California: https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Former-Giant-Aubrey-Huff-is-running-for-office-17380404.php
First of all – yikes.
Second – and this doesn’t really bother me – but Rule 5?
It’s baseball-related.
I stand corrected!
Meh. No advocacy or argument, no problem.
Thanks for the ruling. I was more curious than anything.
When nothing is working . . . nothing is working.
Regretting that top of the first. Pffft.
Very much. Had Lauer on the ropes.
Easy D Peasy.
This may surprise you. It did me: Dodgers have struck out the sixth fewest times in the NL.
Most years they are the least, or among the least, likely to K.
Wow. That is a surprise.
We are spoiled.
Dodgers lead the NL in walks.
Obviously CT3 is way above average, but among the rest of the regulars only Max and Belli are a bit above average, the rest are mostly significantly below the average in striking out. Not surprised at all.
What a play! Hats off.
Local kid Wong makes good.
Through three innings: Gonsolin at 37 pitches, Lauer at 50.
Lauer getting the low strike calls.
That’s an understatement…
Perhaps his name is pronounced “lower.”
In German, it means “more tepid.”
Watching the Little League World Series. Canada up 4-0 on Australia.
To represent the Commonwealth?
To represent the common good at least. Lol
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie
7-0 final
I think we did the best at the Commonwealth Games recently concluded in Birmingham
Australia 178 medals, England 176 and Canada 92
Ha.
Three of our six outs today are by the K, 15 of 33 yesterday,
Well that was disappointing.
We seem to be in a bit of a rut with runners on/in scoring position.
Seems more like an abyss.
Yesterday Joe Davis told the backstory of Evan Phillips and his trip around the ball park looking for his wife’s jacket after he was released by Tampa Bay.
