Game 116, 2022

Dodgers at Brewers, 2:10 PM PDT, TV: BSW, FS1, SPNLA

RHP Tony Gonsolin (14-1, 2.24 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and LHP Eric Lauer (8-4, 3.64 ERA) takes the hill for the Brewers. Gonsolin’s July was a little rough (26 hits and 15 runs in 30 2/3 innings), but he’s bounced back in his first two starts in August. Lauer has already tied his career high in wins this year with a month to go.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1992 Kevin Gross, retiring 22 of the final 23 batters he faces on his wife’s birthday, no-hits the Giants at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. The LA right-hander’s no-no averts the team from being swept in a four-game series at home against the Giants for the first time in 69 years.
  • 2013 Clayton Kershaw blanks the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, 5-0, giving the Dodgers their first double-digit winning streak since 2006. The team’s 42 victories in their last fifty games, including a 25-3 mark since the All-Star break, equals the 1941 Yankees and 1942 Cardinals for the best record for that span of games since 1900.

  1. Numbers don’t lie. Recovering from Covid and tired of reading (and napping), and because statistics have always interested me, I decided to look at Kimbrel’s numbers compared to those of our closers starting in 2000. You won’t be surprised:
    2022 — Kimbrel, 4.57 ERA, 20 of 24 save opportunities, 1.55 WHIP, .272 batting average allowed, 3 wins, 5 losses
    2021 — Jansen, 2.22, 38/43, 1.04, .153, 4-4
    2020 — Jansen, 3.33, 11/13 (shortened season), 1.15, .211, 3-1
    2019 — Jansen, 3.71, 33/41, 1.06, .213, 5-3
    2018 — Jansen, 3.01, 38/42, 0.99, .201, 1-5
    2017 — Jansen, 1.32, 41/42, 0.75, .177. 5-0
    2016 — Jansen, 1.83, 47/53, 0.67, .150, 3-2
    2015 — Jansen, 2.41, 36/38, 0.78, .176, 2-1
    2014 — Jansen, 2.76, 44/49, 1.13, .224, 2-3
    2013 — Jansen, 1.88, 28/32, 0.86, .177, 4-3
    2012 — Jansen, 2.35, 25/32, 0.85, .146, 5-3
    2011 — Guerra, 2.31, 21/23, 1.18, .218, 2-2
    2010 — Broxton, 4.04, 22/29, 1.48, .270, 5-6
    2009 — Broxton, 2.61, 36/42, 0.96, .165, 7-2
    2008 — Saito, 2.49, 18/22, 1.19, .226, 4-4
    2007 — Saito, 1.40, 39/43, 0.72, 1.51, 2-1
    2006 — Saito, 2.07, 24/26, 0.91, .177, 6-2
    2005 — Brazoban, 5.33, 21-27, 1.40, .258, 4-10
    2004 — Gagne, 2.19, 45/45, 0.91, .181, 7-3
    2003 — Gagne, 1.20, 55/55, 0.69, .133, 2-3
    2002 — Gagne, 1.97, 52/52, 0.86, .189, 4-1
    2001 — Shaw, 3.62, 43/43, 1.08. .227, 3-5
    2000 — Shaw, 4.24, 27/27. 1.34, .265/ 3-4

      • Yes, the worst since at least 2000. As is his batting average allowed. But Roberts said that he is staying with Kimbrel as the closer. Reminds me of the guy who kept putting screen doors on submarines and couldn’t figure out why they kept sinking. The numbers also show how meaningless the won-lost record is for closers, but not when it came to Brazoban in 2005.

        • Doc has a big margin to play with. Might as well take advantage of it to see if they can get Kimbrel going.

          • Depends if he starts showing some improvement. Otherwise only until the end of the month so that Doc has September to audition and get the others comfortable in their new roles.

          • Cause for serious concern, but Dodgers have a big margin to play with. Based on his history, Kimbrel’s upside is sky-high, but he’s got a long way to go.

  2. Watching the Pads and Fish today, I learned that Miami has a rookie Quebecker, 2B Charles Leblanc, in the lineup. The only other Quebecker active in MLB is Vlad Guerrero Jr. RHP Jesen Therrien is listed as active but is a free agent (he was briefly in the Dodgers organization, in 2018 and 2019, recovering from TJ).

  3. Turturous, simply turturous. But it is a win. Day game tomorrow. I think it is nationally televised.

  4. So – it could be a one run game for Kimbrel in the 9th. Or the Dodgers could score a few more runs.

  5. Trea is fast, but it hits the ball so hard that it is tough for him to get an infield single.

  6. Who pitches the 8th and 9th for us? Gonsolin, in a brilliant effort, has thrown 95 pitches. And under stress. His season high is 98.

  7. This may surprise you. It did me: Dodgers have struck out the sixth fewest times in the NL.
