Game 50, 2022

Pirates at Dodgers, 5:10 PM PDT, TV: ATT SportsNet PIT, SPNLA

LHP José Quintana (1-2, 2.15 ERA) pitches for the Buccaneers this afternoon; he’ll face the Dodgers’ RHP Mitch White (1-0, 4.60 ERA). Quintana gave up two hits and no runs to the Dodgers in a win on May 9. White is making his third start of the season, pressed into duty by the absence of Kershaw and Heaney and Anderson’s emergence as a starter.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1955 Duke Snider blasts three home runs in the Dodgers’ 11-8 win over Milwaukee. Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, and Roy Campanella also go deep in the Ebbets Field’s contest, helping Brooklyn set a franchise record with six home runs.
  • 1962 In the nightcap of a twin bill at Shibe Park, Don Drysdale beats the Phillies for the 13th consecutive time, continuing a streak which started in 1958. The Dodger right-hander, however, will drop his next seven decisions against Philadelphia after today’s victory.
  • 1997 When Wilton Guerrero scurries to pick up pieces of his shattered bat after grounding out to start the game, home plate ump Steve Ripley becomes suspicious and discovers that the rookie used an altered bat. The Dodgers second baseman is immediately ejected from the game by crew chief Bruce Froemming, and the 21 year-old infielder will also receive an eight-day suspension and a $1,000 fine for his use of a corked bat.

Lineups when available.

  1. Ever since his monster start in 2019, Bellinger has never had a month in which he hit over .281, and he has had many far, far below that. To be fair, 2020 was shortened and he has had some solid post-seasons.

  2. Clutching the World Series trophy, and reflecting on his club’s first title since 1979, manager Derek Shelton responded when asked what was the key for the Pirates’ taking the championship;.”It was when we swept the Dodgers in that three-game series in May and June,” he said. “From that point on, we started to believe in ourselves.”

  3. These Filibusteros haven’t gotten this much under my skin since 2009. Had just seen the Dodgers play the Nats here in DC and then they were off to Pittsburgh up 6.0 in the standings (we had been in first since April 15) with nine games to play. Bucs were on their way to a 100 game lost season (even with Cutch). Figured that we might clinch there, but they took 3 out of 4 and we didn’t get the division crown until the next to last game of the season.

    • I totally remember that. The worse of it was blowing some leads in the 9th inning there.
That champagne was on ice for so long!

  4. Corey Knebel, who’s blown two straight games with walkoff dingers, is facing the Gnats in the gninth with a one-run lead. Joc is the first hitter.

    • Probably destined to go elsewhere at the trade deadline (though he’s been erratic the last few season and could easily regress).

      • Some contender will probably go after him. He becomes a free agent after this season.

  5. If we couldn’t beat these guys with Buehler or Urias, can White do the trick?

  6. That was Pittsburgh’s first sweep at Dodger Stadium since Bill Clinton was president: September 2000.

  7. Had it been 3-2 or even 5-2, I felt we would have had a shot, but 8-2 was too big a hill to climb.

  8. Will the Pirates go back to being the Pirates after this? Or will they win the next 20 games in a row?

  9. Alberto grounded into two DPs today, so Rios, pinch-hitting for him, does the same.

        • He tried to go from first to third on a grounder to third, got thrown out doing it.

          • Ouch. Perhaps we need Maury Wills to return and give the team baserunning tips, but you’d think that Roberts would be able to do that.

  10. A minor point, but it seems that most every time JT comes up, the count goes to 0-2.

  11. 2nd and 3rd with none out and the 2-3-4 hitters due up and we don’t even get to the 4 hitter.

  12. In May, the Dodgers were 4-8 vs the 2 Penn State teams. And 16-1 vs all other opponents.

  13. For a team managed by one of the best baserunners ever, the Dodgers sure seem lost out there.

    • He kept us in the game. He fanned 7. With one or two clutch hits he could have been in line for a win.

      • He didn’t pitch poorly, but he apparently let up after getting those first two K’s in the fifth. He could still be a solid starter.

  14. Scoop, remember that grilled cheese you had at Zippy’s when you visited me? There’s a Zippy’s about two blocks from me, and I think I’m gonna have one for dinner. The thought appeals.

  15. WBB:
Kevin Pillar’s mother called me this morning and asked me to ask you to lighten up on her son.
“He is a good boy. He always took the trash out without having to be asked twice, and he never turned in his homework late.”

  16. Giants have just 5 on the board against the Phils in the 5th and lead 5-2. Giants are still batting in the inning.

  18. House money again: Cards just beat the Padres, 5-2, to sweep their three-game series.

  19. Cards beat Pads again, though they almost gave up a lead-surrendering slam to the washed-up Robinson Canó.
