AL Wild Card Game, 2021

Yankees at Red Sox, 5:10 PM PDT, TV: ESPN

RHP Gerrit Cole (16-8, 3.23 ERA) goes for the Yankees and RHP Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Red Sox.

October 5 has been an eventful day in baseball history. Among other things, Mickey Owens let Tommy Heinrich’s ball get past him in 1941, Al Gionfriddo caught Joe DiMaggio’s fly ball in 1947, Don Newcombe made the first World Series start by a black pitcher memorable but lost 1-0 on a walk-off HR by Tommy Heinrich (him again!) in 1949, Mickey Mantle tore up his right knee in 1951 when DiMaggio called him off a fly ball, and Glenn Burke high-fived Dusty Baker in 1977, the first time that gesture was seen in MLB.

  1. I remember when the Dodgers got two men thrown out at home on the same play. I’d bet that hasn’t happened very often.

  2. No surgery for Max. No ligament damage. Soreness and not a lot of range of motion, according to Doc. So down but maybe not out!

  3. Joe West ranked 96th out of 99 umps behind the plate this year with an accuracy rating of 91.1. He also had the most missed calls. Thankfully he is retiring. Angel Hernandez also needs to go. And take Hickox with you.

    • Can’t screw around in a one and done scenario. Cole obviously didn’t have it tonight.

  4. Just read that Kersh has no ligament damage. So no Tommy John surgery. Hope he is back next year as our #4 starter. Gotta resign Scherzer.

    • You know, I thought at the time that might have happened. Told my husband it looked like a dislocation. But the elbow? My gosh that must have hurt so much.

  5. Go Red Sox. Lesser of two evils. Hope Tampa Bay kicks the crap out of whichever team wins.

  6. No great enthusiasm here, but the Yanquis will always be evil and there are two old friends in Boston’s starting lineup, so it’s gotta be the Sawx.

    • Yep. I don’t like either of them very much, honestly.

Or maybe I just resent ESPN’s incessant hype about the “greatest rivalry in sports,” when for years the Red Sox were no rival at all to the Yankees; they were simply horrible. Dodgers – Giants has been far more intense for far longer.
