Game 113, 2021

Dodgers at Phillies, 4:05 PM PDT, TV: NBCSP, SPNLA

RHP Max Scherzer (9-4, 2.75 ERA) pitches for the Dodgers and RHP Aaron Nola (7-6, 4.49 ERA) does the same for the Phillies.

This date in Dodgers’ history:

  • 1979 Dodger hurler Don Sutton sets a franchise record with his 50th shutout, blanking San Francisco at Candlestick Park, 9-0. The 34 year-old right-hander had previously shared the mark with Don Drysdale. (Ed. note: 50! Through his twelfth year Clayton Kershaw had a career total of 15!)
  • 1995 The first forfeit in the majors in sixteen years occurs when the fans for the third time during the night throw promotional souvenir baseballs onto the Dodger Stadium field. At the time of the decision to halt the game, Los Angeles is trailing the Cardinals, 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

August 10 is a good day for pitchers: in 1971 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, Juan Marichal records his 50th career shutout as the Giants blank the Expos, 1-0. The Dominican hurler’s ninth inning double helps to build the winning run.

  1. At Software Stadium, the Gnats have blown a five-run. Now 5-5 after 5-1/2. The big inning started with a double by pitcher Zac Gallen.

  2. In-game quiz: Name the other Philly with the last name of Herrera and what position did he play? Hint: second half of the 20th century, (No internet research is allowed).

  3. I look at the name of the Philly who just struck out, and I recall what I thought when the Dodgers brought in a new manager for the 2008 season: “Torre Yes!”

  4. With JT and Mookie (possible IL) out, and Kelly to the IL, this is a war of attrition.

  5. Dodgers by the month:
    April, 16-11, .593
May, 16-11, .593 (same as April)
    June, 17-9, .654
    July, 14-12, .538
    August, 4-2, .667
    TOTAL, 67-45, .598
    Most games over .500 (23), at 58-35

    • Their road record (when I was on it) was 6-4. Back in the saddle (couch) now. Indeed, the other Dodger fanatic in the neighborhood almost talked us into going up to Philly to see Max pitch tonight!

  6. While the Giants are at home for six games this week vs. the Diamondbacks and the Rockies, the Dodgers are on the road for six games vs. the Phillies and the Mets. Tough sledding?

      • We are slated to get two starts from Scherzer and from Price and one each from Urias and Buehler. The best pitchers slated to go against us are the Phillies’ Nola (tonight) and Gibson (Wednesday night).

  7. If you gotta face Harper in the eighth, it’s best with a four-run lead, two out, and the bases empty.

  8. I’d still be fine if this one ended an inning or two early to save the pen some work. And to save any late game drama too.

  9. It’s like a west coast start time – but with the added bonus of the game being half over.

  10. Neal Conan (NPR’s TOTN host and gentleman macadamia nut farmer) passed away of cancer today, according to Ken Rudin of NPR at Facebook.

          • Yes. I was wrong in the probable pitchers for this week — from the fantasypros site — that I posted earlier. It should have said: Scherzer today, Price Wednesday, Urias Thursday, Buehler Friday, TBD Saturday and Scherzer Sunday. I wonder if they would move Scherzer up to Saturday on three days of rest considering his short outing today. However, that would still leave us with a TBD on Sunday.

  11. Question: Under the new rules, if the game is called at this point, does it pick up at the same juncture on another date? In the old days, if a game wasn’t official, all records were erased.

    • If these are anything that we got a few hours ago here in DC, they will be heavy and last for awhile.

    • There’s a chance of thunderstorms in the Bay Area, but they could be (potentially disastrous) dry ones. High fire danger here.

  12. Starting in 2015, his first full season with the Red Sox, and continuing through 2019, his last year with Boston, Betts never played in fewer than 136 games. He will fall short of that total this year.

  13. That snaps the string of four games in which the Dodgers had scored in the first inning.
