Dodgers at Diamondbacks, 5:10 PM PDT, TV: FS-A, SPNLA
It’ll be LHP Clayton Kershaw (13-3, 2.76 ERA) against LHP Robbie Ray (11-7, 3.86 ERA) in today’s game at Chase Field. Kershaw actually has a losing record at this site: he’s 6-8 in his career there. He struck out 12 but gave up 3 solo home runs and lost to the Yankees in his last start. Ray had a bad June (1-4, 5.00 ERA) but he’s been solid the rest of this season. He’s averaging 11.8 K/9 and is 2-0 in August.
Here’s the last play of yesterday’s game:
On this date in Dodgers’ history:
- 1950 In front of 14,226 fans at Ebbets Field, Gil Hodges becomes the fourth major leaguer in the century to hit four home runs in one game as Brooklyn routs the Braves, 19-3. The Dodger first baseman also ties the major league record for total bases with 17.
- 1959 Sandy Koufax fans 18 batters to establish a new National League record for a nine-inning game in the Dodgers’ 5-2 win over San Francisco at the LA Memorial Coliseum. The left-hander’s performance equals the major league mark established in 1938 by Indians fireballer Bob Feller during a 4-1 loss to Detroit.
- 2010 The Dodgers trade a player to be named (infielder Tony Abreu) to the Diamondbacks in exchange for starter Jon Garland. The 31 year-old right-hander will post a 3-2 record with a 2.72 ERA in his six late-season starts for the Dodgers, before signing as a free agent with San Diego.
Lineup when available.
Tonight’s Dodger lineup at D-backs:

September Sunday Surmise – Yesterday wasn’t all bad. Though my hometown Atléticos blew one to the Yanquis, Minute Maids lost in Canadia. Dodgers are 1-1/2 games behind NYY and still 1/2 behind Houston. FanGraphs projections give Houston 104.4 wins, NYY 104, Dodgers 103. In the NL, however, Dodgers’ lead over Barves has shrunk to 4-1/2 (Atlanta projects to 96.5).
In the division, Snakes trail by 17 (magic number still 9), Gnats by 20.5 ( down to 6), Pads by 23.5 (3), Rox by 28.5 (pulverized).

This makes me feel even worse.

Worst-case scenario.
The Snakes’ Spanish-language jerseys should say “Serpientes.”
Well, there’s a start!
This is the worst we’ve played this season since the six-game skid in April.
They are just flat.
Three games with 3-0 leads, three leads lost. If you’re gonna slump, better to do it with a 20-game lead, but still, it’s frustrating.
I need Dave’s optimism.
It’s only the top of the sixth but it feels like this one is already lost…
Kershaw has no command whatsoever tonight.
Our pitching has not been stellar lately.
Our offense is slowing down at the same time.
Bad combination.
Drat.
Very bad future person!
We seriously need a DP here.

Corey having a tough night.
He was doing better with the swings but not tonight.
Dodgers are still squandering opportunities, as they did yesterday.
Can’t believe Will didn’t push one over.
Third straight game here in which we’ve been unable to stay in front after going up 3-0.
Pollock just misses one.
Joe just echoed me. “Anything in the air has a chance these days…”
Mier-coles!
That was a good one to hit, however. Hung up there.
Your futuring is getting worse.
I am infuturated at this game at the moment.
These balls are so juiced. All one has to do is connect solidly, it seems.
Here they go again. So infuriating. That was a good pitch and a swing that no one including Kersh thought it was going out.
Oh poo.
Very bad future person!
Should not have gone out.
OK, Scoop, Gyorko got ya one!
First double of the year.
Only 69 ABs so far.
Go, go Gyorko!
Great D by Quique!
JT hit a pitch that was almost over his head.
Nine HRs in his last 17 games including tonight.
Kershaw failed to make up his mind.
Kershaw fails to make up his mind.
Gyorko 2-for-13 with the Dodgers.
SSS, but Freese will be welcome back.
Freese has been missed. What does “SSS” mean?
Small sample size. Gyorko’s been a good major league bat.
True, but Gyorko hit only .196 in a slightly bigger sample size with the Cardinals this season. (Thanks re SSS explanation.)
Also, in Muncy’s absence, https://twitter.com/jorgecastillo/status/1167925190673620993?s=20
What are they waiting for?
Rosters expand tomorrow.
Yes, but the last I heard they were considering having Lux join the team but not play, as they did with Will Smith last year.
It appears they may change their minds.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
It’s not necessarily that they need him. They’ll win the division without breaking a sweat.
He’s been missed. https://twitter.com/alannarizzo/status/1167923915051548672?s=20
Yes, indeed. Glad he’s healing!
