Game 117, 2019

Cardinals at Dodgers, 12:10 PM PDT, TV: YouTube

The Cardinals send RHP Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.93 ERA) to the hill in this final game of the series to face the Dodgers’ redheaded rookie RHP Dustin May (0-1, 4.76 ERA). Flaherty got his first win since May 19 his last time out. He beat the Dodgers in the Cardinals’ sweep of the series in April. May will make his second big league start; he struck out three and walked none in 5 2/3 innings in his first, giving up nine hits and four runs last Friday.

Today in Dodgers’ history:

  • 2003 Fireballer Eric Gagne ties the single-season record for consecutive saves to start a season, established in 1995 by Jose Mesa of the Indians. The Dodger closer strikes out the Reds’ side in the ninth inning for his 38th save this season and 46th consecutive regular-season save overall.

  1. I was surprised the Birds didn’t leave Flaherty in a little longer, given his having thrown only 97 pitches. He was cruising.

Meanwhile, Dodgers now lead Snakes by 18, Gnats by 20, Pads by 23 and Rox by 23.5. They are 8-1/2 up on Barves for best in NL. In all of baseball, they lead the Minute Maids by one game and the Yanquis by 1/2 (.0002).

  2. I have no idea who this clown announcer is now.

Oh, I see he’s Rich Waltz, who apparently used to announce for the Fish.

    • The main problem I see is that they spent far to much time talking about everything but what was going on down on the field, even when they weren’t doing interviews. I liked a lot of the between innings stuff, but don’t ignore the game itself.

  3. With several night games pending, no standings summary yet, except that Dodgers cannot lose ground to anybody. They cannot gain on the Minute Maids, who shattered the Rox in Houston, nor on the Barves, who beat the Twinkies. Gnats are losing to Nats again.

  4. Notice that YouTube puts a between-innings clock on the screen? 2 minutes. That adds to the length-of-game argument. 2 minutes between each half-inning? Am I wrong in thinking that puts an additional 36 minutes on to the game?

    • That’s supposed to be the standard for all games. It actually used to be 2:25 for national games, but it got lowered as Manfred’s one non-controversial pace of play initiative.

  5. Kolarek sounds something one would take for indigestion. Which is what he has given Roberts in his brief appearances.

  6. My rule says fielders have to keep one foot on the ground when leaning into the seats so they don’t go into the stands and easily hurt somebody. If fans can’t go on the field, then players can’t go into the stands. Well, that and more affordable prescription drugs.

  7. Okay Dodger. Let’s score some runs and win this thing for May (even though he can’t get the win)!

    • I was thinking about next year. Even if they don’t retain Hill (might let go) and Ryu (who am I kidding – they will keep him) it will include Kershaw, Buehler, Maeda, Urias, May, Gonsolin, Stripling

  8. For the first time I am watching a game on my computer (YouTube). Crystal-clear picture. Neat. Have the sound off as I am doing some work and can even talk with a client.

    • Bad would be 4-0. Needs to learn how to get the out without giving too much of the plate. Carpenter down this year, but disciplined hitter.

  9. Q: How does one make YouTube coverage worse?
A: Hire Eric Byrnes to do the pregame.

    • Nuts. I forgot it was on YouTube. Let’s see if their connectivity issues have lessened.

    • He’s really rocking that man bun, isn’t he? I hate it.

Is Nomar doing the play by play?

      • I enjoyed watching Byrnes play, because he was clearly having fun, but his shtick is irritating.
