Cardinals at Dodgers, 12:10 PM PDT, TV: YouTube
The Cardinals send RHP Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.93 ERA) to the hill in this final game of the series to face the Dodgers’ redheaded rookie RHP Dustin May (0-1, 4.76 ERA). Flaherty got his first win since May 19 his last time out. He beat the Dodgers in the Cardinals’ sweep of the series in April. May will make his second big league start; he struck out three and walked none in 5 2/3 innings in his first, giving up nine hits and four runs last Friday.
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 2003 Fireballer Eric Gagne ties the single-season record for consecutive saves to start a season, established in 1995 by Jose Mesa of the Indians. The Dodger closer strikes out the Reds’ side in the ninth inning for his 38th save this season and 46th consecutive regular-season save overall.
Lineup:
Today’s Dodger lineup vs. Cardinals:

I was surprised the Birds didn’t leave Flaherty in a little longer, given his having thrown only 97 pitches. He was cruising.
Meanwhile, Dodgers now lead Snakes by 18, Gnats by 20, Pads by 23 and Rox by 23.5. They are 8-1/2 up on Barves for best in NL. In all of baseball, they lead the Minute Maids by one game and the Yanquis by 1/2 (.0002).
NPUT
Martin says, “Let the old guys have some fun, too!” Which makes me ancient.
We did
All of 36.
Martin magic!!!!!!!
Martin’s off. Should be 3-1.
Surprised that the Cards didn’t put in a lefty to face Joc.
This umpire makes me believe in putting a robot behind the plate.
Good thing we keep winning games, because so do the Yankees and Astros.
I have no idea who this clown announcer is now.
Oh, I see he’s Rich Waltz, who apparently used to announce for the Fish.
Still glowing from that win.
I’ll give credit to YouTube for doing a pretty good post-game summary.
The main problem I see is that they spent far to much time talking about everything but what was going on down on the field, even when they weren’t doing interviews. I liked a lot of the between innings stuff, but don’t ignore the game itself.
I was specifically focused on the post-game stuff, which was very thorough.
With several night games pending, no standings summary yet, except that Dodgers cannot lose ground to anybody. They cannot gain on the Minute Maids, who shattered the Rox in Houston, nor on the Barves, who beat the Twinkies. Gnats are losing to Nats again.
Nomar not having it.
Giving props to May.
And still the announcers all Cards all the time.
I admit, I wasn’t sure we’d pull it off again.
I wanted to believe.
Watch out for the Gatorade Lanna
They add in the rosin as well
What a crazy way to walk off. Hippity hop up the middle.
Cliché: “they look like line drives in the box score.”
Smith scores the winning run again!
Classic game of inches!
So happy for Russell.
Still watching on You Tube…
Just saw the hit!
Kinda anti climatic
Got to count the bounces.
I can hear the marketing guys now: “That’s why you need the immediacy of radio!”
See you St. Louis.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Unbelievable!
47-hop ground ball thru the infield for Martin. Amazing.
Dodgers win!
Woo-HOO!!!!!!!!!’
That’s it!
It’s now or never
It’s NOW!
Indeed!
That was one to hit.
Now, just a base hit!
Or another wild pitch…
Ridiculous.
Ha!
Or another WP.
Or two!
Up to Russ
Single, Martin. That’s all we ask.
Bad AB all-around.
Ugh.
That swing for the 2nd strike was horrible. It was way inside.
Rios’s turn?
Smith fails!
Bad future person
Misleading
When you’ve come to expect a dinger…
Fair enough
Make the world believe Smity
Let’s do this.
At least let’s tie it. Better if we win it, of course.
Walk off time
Bad strike one call.
Announcers all got the no-ties-on-Youtube memo.
Bye bye Miller.
Ouch.
Right on the 5 on his back.
Maybe right on the spine
Not fun.
Belli keeps hitting it up the middle and right into their mitts with the shift.
Let’s outlaw the shift!
Ready for some ninth inning magic.
Lovin Spoonful kind.
I believe

Notice that YouTube puts a between-innings clock on the screen? 2 minutes. That adds to the length-of-game argument. 2 minutes between each half-inning? Am I wrong in thinking that puts an additional 36 minutes on to the game?
That’s supposed to be the standard for all games. It actually used to be 2:25 for national games, but it got lowered as Manfred’s one non-controversial pace of play initiative.
Quick turn by Muncy
Just what the doctor ordered. JT DP.
Dang of a throw by Pederson
Spare me another Dexter Fowler at bat. Please?
You are spared (barring extra innings).
Ok – a dp for the feisty lady with a cold.
Dance, as in the cowboy movies would say
Wow, that must have hurt. Carpenter was walking like Chester on Gunsmoke.
Or Walter Brennan,
From West Virgini, they came to stay . . .

Down to the last inning. Let’s go, Blue!
Man, YouTube is about three minutes behind the radio. it’s already 1-0 to Turner on the radio.
And they claim they are live.
I am watching on YouTube, so I want to hear from a Good Future person in the bottom of the 9th.
Me too
Not looking great on either channel…
There has to be a channel somewhere that the Dodgers are winning
Let’s time it. Type now as soon as the radio says a pitch is thrown in the top of the ninth
Thomas singled 45 seconds ago.
Molina singled 15 seconds ago.
I think You Tube is ahead of the radiio
Overhead – not dang close.
Un-sharp.
Lol. You are on fire today.
Takes one to know one.
Some lousy calls today.
Bad strike three call there.
Now I am not sure if Kelly is really sharp or very sharp.
Well, you are both!
I’d say “extremely sharp.”
When I was a newspaper reporter, a colleague once said that we should never use the word “very” in a story, but substitute it with “damn,” which made sense, but which we couldn’t do.
That’s a dang good tip.
Kelly looking very sharp today.
If he was going to have a bad half-season, I am glad it was the first half.
Kelly looking really sharp.
Astros crushed the Rockies, 14-3, in Houston.
See Astros, below.
Si, Astros.
You misspelled “Minute Maids.”
See Dexter Fowler, below.
I had just started to type “… waits for RBI’s comment about Fowler.”
Tee-hee.
Hit one out, Russell!
I’m fighting a cold. Thus, the cranky posts.
Loving the feisty RBI!
“Good swing there.” No. It was a fly ball out.
Kolarek sounds something one would take for indigestion. Which is what he has given Roberts in his brief appearances.
Or, maybe for colds
Also tired of all the Astros.
I am tired of Dexter Fowler. There. I said it.
My rule says fielders have to keep one foot on the ground when leaning into the seats so they don’t go into the stands and easily hurt somebody. If fans can’t go on the field, then players can’t go into the stands. Well, that and more affordable prescription drugs.
Nets!
WinnipegDave: Prescription drugs are a lot less expensive in Canada than in the U.S., right?
Yes. I believe that is true. What can I get you? (jk)
Anything but Kolarek.
Net indeed!

Marine layer discussion implies MLB recognition of climate change?
Yeah, interesting what they were hinting at there.
Is the Play-by-Play guy a Cardinals employee? He keeps yammering about “good at bats by the Cardinals.”
I believe it’s still Rich Waltz, who apparently used to announce for the Fish.
Well, they have Nomar, so it’s likely they’ve tried to balance the broadcast team with a Cardinal guy.
Apparently he’s a sort of freelancer.
Isn’t Marquis in the booth as well?
I noticed as well.
Well after all, the Cards do have a run against a pitcher making their second major league start.
Okay Dodger. Let’s score some runs and win this thing for May (even though he can’t get the win)!
I wish he’d let May finish the inning.
Now I hope somebody can finish the inning.
Yeah – 2 pitchers later at least.
Dinger and long fly with lefties coming up was fine by me to pull the rookie
Between Gonsolin and May, the starting pitching looks strong for the future.
I was thinking about next year. Even if they don’t retain Hill (might let go) and Ryu (who am I kidding – they will keep him) it will include Kershaw, Buehler, Maeda, Urias, May, Gonsolin, Stripling
Well, dang.
Yep. Exactly.
Dang. May blinked first.
There we go again! I mean, who says “dang?”
The Spanish speakers among us say “Mier-coles…”
Don’t want to be violatin’ any rules…
Exactly
Only the good ones. Lol
By an inch, re Pederson’s top of fence double
Run hard, guys. You look bad when you don’t and you might get an extra base by putting pressure on the outfielder.
Rios doing Joc impression.
The ball doesn’t seem to be carrying very wall.
Another long double
Adam Wainwright is very chatty.
Pretty engaging, actually.
Starters on their days off!
Two young aces-in-the-making today.
Pitcher’s duel.
What’s May’s pitch count?
66 after that double.
May with nice pitch to get out of it.
Thought that was gone.
As did Joc.
Doc no.
Joc too!
44 pitches, 3 innings. Pretty good average.
Him coming in instead of Floro will be nice In October.
His motion reminds me of Kevin Brown. Caution: Memory may be fuzzy
They mentioned Bronson Arroyo, too. I can see it.
I hope that May is a nicer person than Brown was.
Hope he can pitch to that level, however.
Big strikezone.
For sure.
For the first time I am watching a game on my computer (YouTube). Crystal-clear picture. Neat. Have the sound off as I am doing some work and can even talk with a client.
Welcome to 2019 Scoop! I recall a few years ago when I called my mother using a computer and not a phone. That seemed trippy to me.
2019! Where have the years gone? (My mother never would consider using a computer.)
Heh. My mother upgraded Win XP to Win 7 on her own.
My mother once road a horse
Bareback or with a saddle?
With a saddle.
My audio breaks up once in a while, but mostly it’s good.
It’s been good here, too. No disconnects so far.
I’m using a so-called SmartTV, and the image is sharp. Usually the MLBTV app, on the same TV, takes some time to warm up before the image becomes sharp.
These in-game interviews are a horrible idea and should be scrapped.
A bit lengthy.
Moreover, there’s a GAME going on, drat it.
Totally agree.
Last time Kershaw went on-and-on. Tends to be gabby (when he is not pitching)
Bad walk. Had him 0-2, then four straight balls.
I’m willing to cut him some slack at this stage.
Bad would be 4-0. Needs to learn how to get the out without giving too much of the plate. Carpenter down this year, but disciplined hitter.
Good first inning by Dustin May.

Q: How does one make YouTube coverage worse?
A: Hire Eric Byrnes to do the pregame.
Nuts. I forgot it was on YouTube. Let’s see if their connectivity issues have lessened.
He’s really rocking that man bun, isn’t he? I hate it.
Is Nomar doing the play by play?
I enjoyed watching Byrnes play, because he was clearly having fun, but his shtick is irritating.
