Game 94, 2019

Dodgers vs. Red Sox, 4:15 PM PDT, TV: Fox

RHP Ross Stripling (3-3, 3.79 ERA) makes his fourth start replacing the injured Rich Hill. He hasn’t been really successful as a starter yet this season; he’s not gotten past the fifth inning in any start and he’s given up four runs in each of the last two. He’ll face LHP Chris Sale (3-8, 4.04 ERA), who’s not been his usual ace-like self this year. In fact, he gave up five runs in each of his last two starts prior to the All Star break.

In about the only Dodger highlight of Friday’s game, Alex Verdugo curls a home run around the Pesky Pole in right field:

This has nothing to do with the Dodgers or the Red Sox, but I found it interesting: a history of the walk-up song.

Lineup when available.

  1. Ordered restored as every division rival lost yesterday. Dodgers lead Snakes by 13.5, Rox by 14.5 (big day for Puig in Denver), Pads by 15 and Gnats by 17.5. They are 4.5 ahead of Barves for best NL record, and one game/.005 ahead of Yanquis for best in baseball.

  2. Sunday Night Baseball tomorrow. Ryu v. Price. National TV audience on ESPN. A-Rod, Jessica Mendoza, Matt Vasgersian and Buster Olney on the microphones.

  3. I hadn’t noticed that Kelly had replaced Stripling and while Stripling was hitting 92 mph on his fastball, when I saw Kelly’s 100 mph fastball and thought it was still Stripling pitching, I was startled. What a difference there is between 92 and 100. That said, Stripling was much more successful than Kelly.

  4. Bob Hendley: I am relatively nearby in Assisi but unable to access much because of all the unfamiliar “cookies” questions. Are they new or just in Europe? It’s 2 a.m. and I am about to go to sleep. What’s the score and what is the inning? This will be one weird day-night doubleheader for us. Dodger fans are everywhere.

  5. Two left on in each of the last two innings. In this park you need every run you can get. I hope that doesn’t come back to bite us.

Also, maybe it’s time we brought Will Smith up to catch and hit. Barnes has not done well at all since 2017.

  6. May catch a bit of this. On a party boat in Lake Como that won’t dock until 2:30pm local time.

  7. You know, I’m glad Walker got to be an all-star, but how much better off would the team be if Roberts hadn’t pitched him in the ASG so he could pitch tonight?

    • On the other hand, don’t let them get a good look at your best starters before the WS?
