Padres at Dodgers, 1:10 PM PDT, TV: FSSD, MLBN, SPNLA
The Cosa Nostra Padres send LHP Joey Lucchesi (6-4, 3.91) to the hill to face Tyson’s the Dodgers’ RHP Ross Stripling (3-2, 3.45 ERA) in a day game at Dodger Stadium. Lucchesi has averaged about 5 2/3 innings per outing in this, his second year in the big leagues. He’s gotten into the sixth inning in each of his last two starts, giving up six runs and getting no decision in either of them. Stripling is making his third start replacing the injured Rich Hill. In his last outing he got into the fifth inning, giving up 4 runs on seven hits while striking out seven.
Here’s Maeda’s 6K performance in yesterday’s 7 2/3-inning effort:
Today in Dodgers’ history:
- 1953 The Dodgers set a major league mark for the most consecutive games with a home run by a team with at least one round-tripper in their 24 contests. Brooklyn starter Preacher Roe hits the record-breaking homer with a third-inning blast in the team’s 9-5 victory over Pittsburgh at Forbes Field. (Note: this record has been broken by seven teams since then, most recently in 2019 by the NY Yankees, who did it in 31 straight games ending July 1)
- 1998 Jeff Shaw becomes the first player to participate in an All-Star Game wearing a uniform for a team he hasn’t yet played for when he works an inning, allowing three hits and a run pitching for the National League squad before appearing in a regular season game for the Dodgers. The 32 year-old closer, who posted a 1.81 ERA along with 23 saves in the first half of the season for the Reds, was traded three days ago by Cincinnati to Los Angeles for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes.
- 2004 Kazuhisa Ishii tosses a one-hitter in the Dodgers’ 11-0 defeat of Arizona. The 30 year-old Japanese southpaw retires the first 12 batters he faces before issuing a leadoff walk to Luis Gonzalez, which is followed with a single by Shea Hillenbrand, but then the left-hander proceeds to mow down 15 consecutive D-Backs to finish his masterpiece.

This would be fun, though… https://twitter.com/ac3581/status/1148403305061609472?s=20
No Home Run Derby thread?
I’m not watching. I forgot about it, to be honest.
It’s pretty forgettable anyway.
I put up a post for it. NPUT

Looks like Bellinger will enter the ASG break hitting below .340.
Giving Dino a hard time about being in the coach’s box. Joe doesn’t recall ever seeing something like that. I recall Bowa having a conflict with an ump many years ago over that.
And he did it without a helmet on
Tatis says “I too can hit home runs leading off the game. Take that, Pederson!”
Today’s game is free game of the day on MLBTV. Meanwhile, Yanquis have lost, guaranteeing Dodgers best MLB record at the break.
Should be able to catch much of this one with a 10:10 starting time here in Italy. Scoop in Assisi would be about 250 miles south of me here in Como.
With a scoop of gelato, perhaps, to accompany you?
Freddo’s was the gelato of choice when we lived in BA. There was a shop by your apartment I believe, by the zoo on Libertador.
Freddo still exists, as a forgettable chain. The best is http://www.heladeriacadore.com.ar, at Corrientes and Rodríguez Peña, but not easy walking distance and we’re just outside their delivery area.
I’m glad I ate early or you guys would be making me hungry.
Had a good steak for lunch on the lake shore way back in 1984.
Hard to find a bad meal around here, as my expanded waistline will attest.
Well that was an awful three games. 18-11 now when the starter is a lefty. It’ll be nice to have Freese back, along with Seager. I have no idea what to expect from Pollock.
Next game Friday the 12th.
Against the Red Sox in Boston.
You misspelled “Sawx.”
What a let down of a series. Playing so well at home and then fall on their faces in this series.
Good time for a break
Swept
No, Dodgers won first of four-game series.
What’s the “on field delay”?
Someone jumping into the field. Tackled by about ten security guys.
Going after Belli?
Other side of the field. And a dude.
Joe Davis doing his own color on Meyers letting the ball drop.
It won’t be long before he becomes a one-man-crew like Vinnie.
Well, two to score three.
To be a little picky, the third run might come in extra innings.
I won’t last that long.
It’s too nice here to watch past the ninth so I am with you on that.
What time is it there?
Coming up on 1am.
Good morning
If you were in Buenos Aires, you might start thinking about where to go for dinner.
When the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor…
?
I think I missed something here.
I left for awhile and when I came back I was trying to figure that out too.

Dodgers are really missing Freese and Rich Hill, Seager and Pollock not quite so much.
Nice stroke by JT.
JT hits his first HR in weeks.
Work to be done.
Whelp
Tough luck Chicken Strip.
Big situation
Tough luck for Stripling.
Very.
That helps.
So, which thing are they challenging?
Both Managers stayed calm. Looks like it was all about whether the run scored. It would have if the runner had hustled.
Renfroe Machadoed it.
Turner seems to have closed his stance again.

Lucchesi has such an exaggerated windup.
Herky-jerky, as we used to say.
Max with his 22nd.
That’s more like it…
