Padres at Dodgers, 6:10 PM PT, TV: SPNLA, FSSD
The Padres’ RHP Jhoulys Chacin (11-8, 4.15 ERA) faces the Dodgers’ LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-6, 3.53 ERA). Chacin pitched 5 shutout innings against the Dodgers in Petco Park on July 2; he’s had his road troubles (7.36 ERA) but in his last 12 starts he’s put up a 3.21 ERA overall. Ryu’s last start was his best of the year, and in fact he’s thrown 15 straight scoreless innings and is 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA in his last six appearances.
This day in Dodgers’ history:
- 1984 Former Dodgers Don Drysdale and Pee Wee Reese, along with Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew, American League hurler Rick Ferrell, and perennial All-Star shortstop Luis Aparicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
In a great moment of fan history, in 2014 Tim Pinkard, attending his first game at Minute Maid Park, catches two home run balls, both off the bat of the Astros’ DH Chris Carter. In the third inning of Houston’s 10-4 victory over Minnesota, the Springfield (VA) resident gets his first souvenir of the night when the ball rebounds off a sign in left field, and then in the fifth frame, against astronomical odds, catches the second round-tripper stroked by the same batter, which is a laser shot hit directly to his seat.
Lineup when available.

Anybody remember Brian Holton? https://twitter.com/latimessports/status/896549764774346753
Apparently Utley asked the second-year umpire to move and the ump declined, which caused Chase to express himself in a way which didn’t endear him to the ump, so out he went.
It’s like the old saying, “Every time you go to the park, it goes, you have a chance to see something you’ve never seen before.”
Hope that guy’s not behind the plate manana.
On the Major League level, an umpiring crew generally rotates positions clockwise each game. He’ll be at first base tomorrow.
Good win.
Seaver said a bad word to Logan. I guess in describing what happened with Chase.
Seager?
Yep. Doc says there was a disagreement about umpire positioning.
Just listening to Doc about Utley now.
What’s Tom doing at Dodger Stadium?
Geronimo!
Woo-HOO!!!!!!!!!
Chase chased?
Weird. Over nothing, looks like.
Musta been something.
Well, it was a quiet something.
Taylor to second?
Forsythe.
Right.
Not much left on the bench.
Roh roh. Kenley getting hit.
A little better than warning-track power from Bellinger and Taylor.
CT3!!!!
Our power hitting leftfielder.
Only Ozuna has a higher SLG among regular leftfielders in the NL.
Well I need to run. It was fun hanging out here again. Hopefully Baez can get out of the 8th without giving up a run and Jansen can close it out in the 9th.
Bellinger!
Oh this team!
Bellinger trying to keep pace with Stanton…
Belli, bella.
Fine inning by Morrow!
Throw him out there for one more or bring in Baez?
Guessing Baez. IIRC, he gave up the dinger last time they tried to stretch him to two.
Puig steals home!
Wow – was it a straight steal or some sort of designed play?
He’s kidding, a bit. It was during rundown of Corey.
Thanks. Gameday is frozen trying to work it all out. It is sitting at 3-2 count to Corey still.
Puig saw his chance, and took it.
I loved that play so much. Had to watch it three times.
Corey! Puig!
Ok Corey its up to you to save this inning.
Don’t know how Barnes is as a pinch hitter but he is hitting well overall this season.
.300 BA
But couldn’t hit the ball far enough there.
Has to be warning track to get Grandal in.
If only Barnes had been on third and Grandal at bat.
Terrific AB by the selective Puig.
Nice to see Puig work out a walk there.
Ha! Bringing in a righty!
2 and 3 with no out. Let’s score them both here.
4 pitch walk is a nice way to start the inning.
It has been over two months since the Dodgers have lost a series. 15-0-3 since June 5-7th series against Washington.
Joc with a night to forget.
Darn. That inning had some really potential.
See ya next year, Bryce… https://twitter.com/BreakingSprtNws/status/896561811784388614
Unfortunate for him and the Nats.
This may have been a fake account.
Very quick speculation, in any event. But does look serious to me.
MRI suggest no ligament damage of that severity.
Up to Bellinger now.
Make that Joc.
Big moment right now. Chacin is tiring and the big bats are coming up.
The last couple days, Dodgers have warning-track power.
That was the oddest HR. It did not look like it was anywhere near going out.
How about that.
Looks like Harper hurt his knee pretty bad tonight.
Judging from the expression on his face, I’d agree.
I hope he’s OK, but it doesn’t sound good.
No long guys available so will need to patch something together at the rate Ryu is going.
Downside: 87 pitches thru four innings. Upside: 56 of them have been strikes.
As I whistle past this graveyard.
Fish quarry the Rox 4-3, but Snakes trapping the Cubbies 4-0 after 6-1/2.
Ryu and Maeda have been pitching better than Hill and Darvish. The latter two tend get to 100 pitches in 5 innings.
Ryu’s pitch count is way up there now.
A one-run lead is better than nothing (tho it didn’t last last night . . . twice).
But these ARE the Dodgers and those ARE the Padres, right?
That’s why they call it baseball.
I remember the Cubs were swept by the Pads last year.
If that’s what it takes to get the ring, that’s okay.
Good team win 6 out of 10. Like win 3, lose 2, win 3, lose 2. We are spoiled, and I love it!
In baseball, more than any other sport, bad teams are capable of beating good teams.
Joc deked!
Indeed. I got away with that a lot in softball by slowing up as I reached second, and then speeding up on rounding the bag. Caught the OFers flat-footed, though I was never a burner.
Orel pointed out that Joc was flatfooted when he picked up the ball. He had his legs spread as an infielder does, with no momentum toward the infield.
I would done the same thing. That is the best way to catch a hard bouncer.
It’s better to do that than to let the ball past you.
Runner looked like he gave Joc a slight hesitation and go route but at the same time, it was a hard hit ball and Joc might have done the best thing in making sure he caught the ball.
Scoring flyball.
Just unlike last night when lots or runners on base but not knocked in
Now 0-1 RISP.
Oops, now 0-2.
These here Pads actually had a 14-11 July.
They have some good young talent. Far brighter future than the Gnats.
I’ve had enough of this losing streak.
Ja, ja.
You heard about the Gallego who hanged himself? “Manuel, que vayas al super a comprar Kolynos. Si no hay, Colgate…”
