Game 127, 2015

Cubs at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN

Clayton Kershaw (10-6, 2.29 ERA) looks to get a win after two straight starts in which the bullpen blew leads he’d handed to it. The Cubbies send Jason Hammel (7-5, 3.35 ERA) out to do battle with him.

Kershaw lost his only previous start against the Cubs this season on June 22, 4-2. He gave up two home runs and the Dodgers, who also had two dingers, couldn’t get to the Cubs’ bullpen, which came in early and gave up only one run in seven innings.

Lineup when available.

Puig to the DL with right hamstring strain.

    • For once, the baserunning was good, and they also got timely offense from Quique and SVS (in context, that GIDP was not bad).

      • It worked out, but was it actually smart for Utley to try for third on the wild pitch? Wasn’t the batter motioning him to stay? Good throw has him?

  1. Cards lose. Which normally would be delightful. Even their loses mess with the Dodgers.

  2. If Kershaw has 7 starts left, then he needs to average just a tick over 9 k’s/game to get to 300. If he gets 14k each game left he would finish with 334.

  3. Time to exercise some demons. Two starts ago Kershaw was the pitcher of record with a 4-1 lead in Oakland and the Dodgers lost.

  4. Vin on Kershaw yelling at himself: I think Kershaw was thinking he wanted 5 straight strikeouts.
Hate to disagree with Vin, but I think Kershaw was yelling about giving up his first walk.

  5. That single by Crawford would have scored Turner who shouldn’t have been called out at second since Russell never touched the bag.

  6. Please let’s not waste another strong outing from Kershaw. Just the one mistake thus far on the HR. 11 strikeouts and no walks.

  7. Rizzo’s foul ball was a baseball doubleheader. It dinged both Grandal and the ump.

  8. If only Gonzo’s fly ball and Turner’s were exchanged. Utley would have had a chance to score on Turner’s but for the fact it was the third out.

  9. I escaped the Vegas heat and enjoyed the Utah Shakespeare Festival this week. At “The Taming of the Shrew” last night, I sat next to a guy wearing a Reds hat. I said I was a Dodger fan and appreciated the sweep. We had a nice conversation — I love how sports can be a great bonding opportunity, even with fans of different teams.

Tho I only heard a few innings of these last three games, I’m hoping Kersh’s challenge to the team was taken to heart. A truer test will be these next two series, against winning teams, including the not-fade-away Giants (when will they realize this is NOT an even-numbered year?!!).

Hopefully the corner has been turned and a Blue wave starts now and crests in mid-October!

    • This year, it may to crest in early November.

Temperatures in the low 80s feel brutal in Oakland, but you’d probably considerate it a/c.

      • Low 80s would be a severe cold front in Vegas at this time! It’s not just a cliche, it’s true, at least for me — the dry heat isn’t as bad as humidity. Unfortunately, we’ve had a stretch here with temps in the 100s and humidity as high as 30%.

        • Heat like this never last more than a few days in the Bay Area, and it almost always cools off at night. I can feel the breeze right now.

          • If we’re lucky, we cool off to low 80s at night . . . if we’re not, it’s in the 90s.

          • I’ve never been to Vegas, but the Argentine province of San Juan is an oven in summer. Fortunately, there are fresh orange juice carts on almost every corner.

          • Give ’em what they want!

On behalf of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, it’s really not that bad here, even in the summer — if you can’t stand the heat, go inside! I actually walk up to 15 miles a day in the heat (my home is centrally located to everything I need, including the only second-run movie theater in town) — just drink lots of water and don’t stay out too long.

          • Wasn’t all in a stretch — usually no more than a mile at a time. 🙂
