Game 84, 2015

Phillies at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

17 of the next 20 games the Dodgers play are against the NL East. At the moment, only the Nationals and the Mets are above .500 in that division, and the Phillies are at the bottom with a 28-56 record.

The Phillies send out Sean O’Sullivan, who’s 1-6 with a 5.76 ERA. The Dodgers haven’t declared their starter as of 1:00PM PT; watch Twitter for news.

Update: It’ll be Eric Surkamp for the Dodgers. He’s got a career 4-3 record with a 6.20 ERA in the majors. His last big league appearance was with the White Sox in 2014. The Dodgers got him from the White Sox in May, and he’s had a 4-2 record with a 4.50 ERA in six starts for AAA Oklahoma City since then.

Lineup when available.
Pfft. Not Surkamp after all. I was lied to.

Tonight’s #Dodgers lineup vs. Phillies:
Pederson CF
Kendrick 2B
Turner 3B
Gonzalez 1B
Grandal C
Puig RF
Ethier LF
Garcia P
Rollins SS

  1. I feel sorry for Dodger pitchers the next 4 or 5 games, they used a week’s worth of runs last night.

      • Yeah, who scored SEVEN RUNS against them last night. The Dodgers have the uncanny ability to make any team look like the 1927 Yankees…

  2. I see you all lived up to expectations and got the save for Elysian Fields.

Likely Surkamp is gone. And likely to be forgotten, if last night is all he has. 4 Ks for him a bright spot, but…

    • Almost forgot there would be a winning pitcher in tonight’s game…

      • Gotta say that I find it comical that there were 367 pitches thrown in tonight’s game and that the winning pitcher only threw 6 of them. He threw 3% of the Dodger pitches and just over 1.5% of the total pitches, Dodger threw 186 – Phils threw 181.

    • Kudos to JP. Big difference with his FIP (2.47), however. As well, his inherited Runners scoring rate is 26%, just a little bit better than league average.

  3. Sorry for the quick departure, but I am tired. Don’t know if package is still around at almost 2:30 in the morning for him,

  4. As Mel Allen used to say, “How about that!” Five games up on the Giants.

  5. And now Dr. Jekyll – I mean Jansen – is here to replace Mr. Hyde.

  6. Grandal: “I’m taking matters into my own hands. Let’s end this thing.”

  7. MLBTV often picks up the end of a late night West Coast game and broadcasts it. It may do so tonight.

  8. OK, I was able to check in long enough to get you guys a 3-run lead. Maybe you all can hold on and get the save.

“Save–Elysian Fields 1” needs to be in the pitching box score later on. ;-])

  9. 7 earned runs given up but 10 Phillies phanned. More odd numbers in an odd game.

  10. The linescore is actually a beautiful combination of 3’s, 2’s, 1’s and 0’s.

  11. This is exciting: so far the Dodgers are winning 135 pitches to 134! A grand total of 269 pitches so far in the game!

      • You are a trooper! Boy scout/girl guide badge for you in the works if you make it to the end!

  12. And the cry goes up in the crowd, one that seemed unfathomable just a few moments earlier: “Bring back Surkamp!”

  13. Giants now at .500. So do we remove our 3-9 record against them from the column of how we’ve done vs. teams with winning records?

  14. From a Gnatblog: “The meat of our batting order is more like soy…”

  15. Catcher’s interference. But will it actually help the Dodgers taking the bat out of AGon’s hands?

  16. Okay this is definitely the inning to get back in the groove: Kendrick, Turner, Gonzo and Grandal due up.

  17. If Beachy is not better when he comes up than Surkamp, we have some problems.

  18. Joc is a wizard with the glove in the outfield and a magician with the bat at the plate – he is making his batting average disappear!

  19. The Mets-Giants game (scoreless) is already in the 8th inning. Didn’t it begin about the same time that ours did?

  20. I see the Mets are suddenly having trouble scoring runs again because they are no longer playing the Dodgers. At least the Giants are still rolling on their current streak.

  21. I’m sure Surkamp’s mother thinks he is pitching well. But then again she is a Phillies fan. (jk)

  22. Correct me if I am wrong. But I don’t recall the Dodgers ever going with this kind of bullpen committee pitching before, and certainly not twice, during a regular-season game that had meaning. Given Mattingly’s predilection for using the bullpen too much anyway, what kind of bullpen shape will this leave us in for the remaining six games before the All Star break? What was wrong with bringing up a Triple-A starting pitcher and hoping to get five or six innings from him? Mattingly’s managing strategies continue to amaze me.

    • All the other “depth” guys had already pitched when they found out Frías had to go on the DL.

      • I am not being sarcastic here, but is this the best we could have done on the mound tonight?

      • Regardless of who is making the decision, this is something I have not seen before in my many decades of being a Dodgers fan.

    • Story is that all other feasible options are on the DL or recently pitched.

The DL part they can’t control. The “recently pitched” part they could have.

  23. Hmm – I’m not sure if Surkamp is going to pitch too many innings tonight. 3 batters, 3 runs.

  24. So, I guess the Dodgers are hoping for 3 innings from Garcia? Then bring in Surkamp for another 3 or 4? Is that best case scenario tonight from the Dodgers point of view?

    • If the ASG had any integrity, he should be chosen and should go. But it doesn’t, and he shouldn’t.

      • Going up against 3 other pitchers: Cueto (Reds), Martinez (Cards), Familia (Mets) and also Tulo (Rockies). My guess is Martinez or Tulo go.

        • The ASG is my mid-season break from baseball. The last good one took place in 1994.

  25. So, I have tickets to the game tonight. Yimi Garcia starting? I got nothing to say about that, except this should be an interesting game. Any bets on how we’ll do?

    • Regardless of who’s pitching – the pleasure and joy of going to a game still strikes me. Enjoy!

      • Yep. If only the managers would dump the modern canned music and let the organists play, and let the background noise be “Cold beer here! Cold beer!” and “Red hots! Gitcher Red Hots!”

        I’m getting old.
