Game 100, 2015

Dodgers at Mets, 10:10AM PT, TV: SPNLA, TBS

New dad Zach Greinke shortens his 3-day paternity leave to pitch against the Mets’ Jacob deGrom. Both men pitched in the All-Star Game 10 days ago. Greinke is 9-2 with a 1.30 ERA and 117 Ks on the year; deGrom is 10-6 with a 2.18 ERA and 120 Ks. Greinke has a 43 2/3-inning consecutive scoreless streak going, while deGrom has given up 3+ earned runs only once since mid-May and has walked only nine men and struck out 83 in those 11 starts. He’s 7-2 over that span of games.

Lineup when available.

  1. Tyler Clippard goes from A’s to Mets. Great set up guy, having a bit of a down year

  2. On an off day, Jon W unleashes a torrent of links he’s been saving up. All are good reads if you haven’t seen, but IMO most relevant one is to story giving number of WS titles won 1995-2014 by teams who acquired a top-shelf pitcher mid-season…

    Would you believe 0?

Link to all his 47 other links next. You’d think Jon was a Linkmeister, or something. ;-])

  3. Three days off over the next week at home! I will be chomping at the bit, but am sure that players will welcome respite.

  4. From Jon W:

Orel Hershiser’s take, via Mark Saxon at ESPN Los Angeles: “In my whole career, I never threw the ball better than Zack Greinke. Never,” Hershiser said. “I never threw with his velocity, I never threw with his change of speeds, I never was able to execute as many pitches as he can on any given night to both sides of the plate. On any given night in my career, I haven’t ever thrown the ball better than Clayton Kershaw. These guys are just better.”

  5. You can play what-if all day, but asking power hitter SVS to sac bunt may not have been a good idea.

Nothing terrible resulted. Runner to 3rd and SVS out.

But if the concept is that the best managers are the ones who put their players in positions where they are most likely to succeed, asking a slugger who’s by pedigree not as comfortable bunting to do so is not a high-percentage play.

No guarantees had he been allowed to hit away, of course.

  6. Would have been interesting with that HBP, if he had not already given up a run (Deitz redux?). Scherzer lost his perfecto on something similar

  7. deGrom mows down deDodgers in the first. Maybe that will change, but this guy is tough.

    • Really good and still young (at the same age, though, Kershaw is far more accomplished).
