Game 92, 2014

News of the day: the Dodgers have placed Josh Beckett on the 15-day DL. By doing it now he may only miss one start. Pedro Baez has been called up from the Isotopes to fill Beckett’s roster spot.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies may ask for a trade to a contender, but not until after this season is done. Rosenthal thinks there’s no way Colorado’s GM would trade him within the division, so even though the Dodgers would love to replace the older and often-banged up Hanley Ramirez, it seems unlikely to him.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-4, 3.08 ERA) will pitch for the Dodgers. The Tigers send out Justin Verlander, who’s having a very un-Verlander-like season: 7-7 with a 4.71 ERA. Given this: “Verlander is 22-2 with a 2.56 ERA in his career against National League teams,” one hopes his poor luck this year continues for today.

Josh Beckett v. Yohan Flande. We all know about the season Josh Beckett is having (5-5, 2.37 ERA, and it should have several more wins than that). Mr. Flande is a rookie whose appearance today will be his third in the major leagues. He’s 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA.

Carl Crawford is beginning a rehab assignment in Albuquerque this weekend.

Game 90, 2014

Dodgers at Rockies, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Dan Haren’s record of 8-4 with a 3.57 ERA would look very good on most teams. His last start was probably his best of the season, and he says he’s just trying to keep up.

“I’ve been on good staffs, but it’s tough to hold my weight here,” Haren said. “Every time out the guys are dealing. I’ve just tried to maintain the momentum and haven’t done that until [the last start].”

His pitching opponent today will be Jorge De La Rosa, who gave up eight runs to the Dodgers the last time he faced them in June, when he lost to Kershaw in the no-hit game. Lefty De La Rosa is 8-6 with a 4.86 ERA.

Believe it or not, the Dodgers have made it to 50 wins this season faster than all but two other teams — the As lead the AL West with 53 and the Brewers (the Brewers?) are atop the NL Central with 51.

Game 89, 2014

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

It’s a pitching mismatch, but the teams still have to go out and score runs and play defense. Clayton Kershaw brings his June Pitcher of the Month credentials and his 9-2 record with a 2.04 ERA to the hill against Jair Jurrjens, who has spent the entire season pitching in AAA for the Reds’ Louisville farm team. He was an All-Star in 2011 for the Braves but has fizzled since, playing mostly in the minors since the middle of 2012. This season he has a 4.46 ERA over 34 1/3 innings at Louisville.

Ramirez is in the lineup, so I guess they’ve decided not to put him on the DL and just hope the three-day All Star Break is enough time for his shoulder and legs to recover.

Game 88, 2014

Dodgers at Rockies, 5:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA, MLBN

The Dodgers send Ace 1B out today as Zack Greinke takes the hill with a 10-4 record and 2.78 ERA. The Rockies pitch former bullpen denizen Franklin Morales, who’s 4-4 on the season with a 5.75 ERA. He’s starting because the Rockies’ rotation has been hit with injuries.

The Dodgers have improved their record at home: they went 13-19 in their first 32 home games through June 4, and they’ve gone 9-4 in their last 13.

Via Twitter, the Dodgers have recalled Erisbel Arruebarrena and optioned Carlos Triunfel back to Albuquerque. They’re still mulling what to do with Hanley Ramirez and his sore shoulder and leg.

Today’s the last day of All-Star Game voting. Have you pushed the button for Puig yet?

Game 87, 2014

Indians at Dodgers, 12:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Hyun-Jin Ryu will pitch the final game of the four-game series for the Dodgers. The lefty is 9-4 with a 3.12 ERA, including seven quality starts in his last eight outings. The Tribe sends out Trevor Bauer, who’s 2-4 with a 4.39 ERA. That’s a little misleading; he’s got five quality starts in eight tries this season. Bauer is a Southern California product; he went to Hart High School in Santa Clarita and was the first round pick (and third overall) by the D-Backs in 2011 after attending UCLA. The Indians acquired him as part of the three-team deal in which they sent Shin Soo-Choo to the Reds in 2012.

As bad a game as Kemp had last night, I’m a little surprised he’s not sitting today rather than Puig.

Game 86, 2014

Indians at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Josh Beckett, who’s 5-4 with a 2.11 ERA, pitches for the Dodgers and Justin Masterson, who’s 4-5 with a 5.03 ERA, pitches for the Tribe.

“The Indians have been shut out for 21 consecutive innings, during which the offense has gone a combined 3-for-63.” You could look at that one of two ways: either the futility will last forever or the team is overdue to break out.

Ramirez is still sore but the team is hoping he can avoid going on the DL.
