Game 86, 2014

Indians at Dodgers, 7:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Josh Beckett, who’s 5-4 with a 2.11 ERA, pitches for the Dodgers and Justin Masterson, who’s 4-5 with a 5.03 ERA, pitches for the Tribe.

“The Indians have been shut out for 21 consecutive innings, during which the offense has gone a combined 3-for-63.” You could look at that one of two ways: either the futility will last forever or the team is overdue to break out.

Ramirez is still sore but the team is hoping he can avoid going on the DL.

  1. Eric Stephen notes this :

“On the season the Dodgers are 8-for-55, hitting .145/.183/.218 with the
bases loaded. They rank 30th in baseball in those situations in batting
average and on-base percentage, and are 29th in slugging percentage and
OPS, with only Tampa Bay worse.”

See definition of pressing, trying too hard. Still, this team is too talented for atrocious numbers like that to last.

And, despite this depressing stat, still is among league leaders in some offensive categories.

When the bases-loaded futility advances to some kind of statistical mean, look out.

    • Interesting. What are the numbers as regards actually filling the bases?

  2. The best way to shut out the Dodgers is to issue 3 intenional walks to start each inning.

  3. According to Nomah on the post-game show the Dodgers are now 8 for 55 with the bases loaded this season. That equates to a .145 BA.

      • lead off back to back doubles without scoring and loaded bases with no outs and not scoring will do it to you every time

    • This one had some unusual twists, but I would still go with the 18-7 loss to Snakes when Kershaw lasted 1.2 inning and gave up 7 runs.

    • Nice to see you here, Winnipeg Dave. You might say a highlight in an otherwise grim night.

  4. Ack. Not what I wanted to see tonight. Looks like this has been a very weird game so far. Did I read this right? A triple play against us?

  5. It’s like Tim Howard is suddenly behind home plate for Cleveland.

  6. That would have been a very sad triple play if Puig hadn’t been safe. Or perhaps will be a sad triple play…

  7. Vin in fine form tonight re: Jackie Price, who I had never heard of him before. Imagine a live snake as your belt!

  8. How’s Cleveland’s middle relief? Masterson already over 60 pitches in the second inning.

    • Not following them, but based on ERA+ they seem to have a fairly solid pen.

  9. Thanks John. To be honest I kinda forgot about this corner of the Dodger world, but I see everyone’s name here and it brings back memories from the Dodger Thoughts community.
    Hooray for hits!

  10. Beckett due for a bit of a regression I suppose. But I sense he may have enough to out pitch Masterson.

    • He is a different pitcher now, but yeah, he has only had one full season out of 13 with an ERA of under 3.

        • Yes, but I’m not greedy — to answer back at all was important . . . and I guess I’m used to them not getting those clutch hits . . . so they’re appreciated even more when they occur.

Getting A-gon going is crucial, so the blast coming from him was great.

  11. So Ángel Pagán, like Scutaro, is spineless. Not that great, but better than any other option that the Gnats have.

  12. . . . Let the futility last until they leave LA, then they can break out!
