Game 39, 2014

Giants at Dodgers, 1:10PM PT, TV: SPNLA

Once upon a fairly-recent time if there was a big game between these two old rivals you’d expect the pitching matchup to be Lincecum for San Francisco and Kershaw for Los Angeles. Not anymore. Today’s game has Kershaw, but his opponent is 38-year old 209-game winner Tim Hudson, who’s been an ace for several teams in his career. Oddly, despite all his years with the Braves, he’s only started four times in Dodger Stadium and won only once. Overall he’s got a 6-4 record and a 3.49 ERA in 14 career starts against the Dodgers. Kershaw was 3-1 in five starts last year alone against the Giants.

  1. they were just teasing us in the bottom of the 9th (I had to go as soon as Hanley tied it up and i only just came back then!)

    • They have got that teasing thing down quite well . . . unfortunately for us!

  2. Kershaw goes 7 and walks none . . . bullpen goes 3 and walk 4???!!!

We know he’s superhuman . . . but are the relievers adequatelyhuman?

  3. If you use results as the definition, the Giants are easily the better team . . . for now.

We can only hope that somehow, some time, LA can live up to their potential.

    • Of course, the same goes to Kersh after LA took the lead. And I hate to ever blame him — much easier (and justified) to blame the bullpen.

        • I was thinking the same thing — he’ll probably say that in interviews, but unless he goes the full 9, the “usual suspects” would come in with their usually suspect play.

    • I’m sure the Dodger front office feels the same . . . but what can be done? The only consistently good group are the starters — bullpen and offense cannot be counted on so far.

  4. Anyone have time to research causes for LA extra-inning games this year — is it because they tie it up at the end to force extras, or they give up the lead? (My bet is the latter.)

  5. Wow! Even tho I’m not confident of the LA vs. SF bullpens, this was huge to show what the offense CAN do . . . and take Kersh off the hook.

  6. I leave and the Giants score.
I leave again and the Dodgers score.
Guess I’m irrelevant to the game!

  7. Just heard Steiner’s recap . . . the Giants’ aggressiveness with sending the runner helps them, whereas it has hurt LA today.

I’m shaking my head about pitching to Posey with 1st open — that’s one where I question Donnie (granted, it’s in hindsight, but he’s a guy I don’t want to hurt the Blue).

  8. Wow , . . 11 hits and only 2 runs (so far).
Still, that’s better than that game several years ago when it was 11 hits and only 1 run. . . . But they didn’t have a lineup with this potential.

  9. Andre is hot! Maybe there’s something to this platooning and proving!

  10. Just checked back in after LA took the lead and boy, is this depressing!
Tough when the Ace can’t keep a lead . . . but more of the blame goes to the offense than Kersh.

  11. 2 outs at the plate . . . could look at that as pressing/bad luck — or aggressive.
I’ll try to be optimistic with the latter.
