A.J. Ellis to have surgery

They’ve played 7 games and already Ellis is out with a meniscus tear and his batterymate Kershaw is out for a month.

It was not said how Ellis, who had four singles and four walks in 28 plate appearances to start the 2014 season, suffered the injury. Ellis was out in a bang-bang play at the plate Saturday but remained in the game, though he did not play Sunday.

Fedex will probably be recalled from AAA Albuquerque to replace him.

Old friend Nathan Eovaldi is talked up as a strong addition to your fantasy baseball team.

  1. Would anybody else see the the following trade as good for both Miami and Dodgers:

    To Dodgers: Fernandez and Saltalamacchia

To Miami: Puig, Fedex, and Lee

    • Not sure what Salty brings to the equation, so to me the Dodgers would be over paying.

      • Included Salty if it turns out Ellis has chronic knee problems that would limit number of games he could play

        • Why do we want another pitcher, even one of the potential quality of Fernandez (who has, after all, only one year under his belt) when it would cost us a slugger like Puig, a serviceable backup catcher like Fedex and a potential star like Lee?

Are you just trying to be rid of Puig? The kid is 5 or 6 years younger than our other outfielders, and he’s got everything going for him once he matures a little. The Dodgers would be crazy to trade him.

          • Asking the question. Obviously I think enough of Puig to think he could bring Fernandez to the Dodgers. Should both Puig and Fernandez become great, my question would be similar to asking who would you rather have, Kershaw or Trout.

          • If the basic question is would I trade Puig for Fernandez with complementary players to be discussed later — yes I would.

  2. It’s the word “probably” that scares me the most. This shouldn’t be an opportunity to see what Olivo still has in the tank. The Dodgers need to find out if FedEx has what it takes to someday take over for AJ.

  3. As the subject of three knee arthroscopies myself, I find this less worrisome than others do. Obviously I’m not a professional athlete, but I was significantly older than A.J. for my last one and, within a week, I was playing slow-pitch again (and going three-for-three, though I used a courtesy runner). I probably shouldn’t have played then, but these surgeries are pretty routine now, and I would expect him to recover quickly, especially with the rehab resources available to professionals.
